Wine should be able to take care of this. Once the processor gap has been filled in, wine should be able to run most windows apps without Windows and without restarting. Work had already been done up to this point on porting Wine to PPC. They got it working, but you have to re-compile your code for x86. Their next step was to interface it with QEmu to allow emmulation as well. Looks like they don't have to do that now.

Yeah. The one thing that always gets me is that banks print your account number and sometimes social security number on checks that you cash. In today's digital age, banks allow you to view the image of any check that you gave out after it has been cashed. If there is someone that is less than reputable that gave you a check to cash, they can view the image of that check online after you have cashed it. Guess what is on the check that they now have... * your bank acount number * your signature * your social security number Think about it.

This just goes to show why using social security numbers for identification purposes is a bad idea. It always disturbs me how many places actually have that number. It was supposed to really be a secret number to identify your for social security, not everyday identification.

Even the "All Mac" school districts could get free licenses for Microsoft Office for Mac. I don't think that those districts would go out and buy all new computer equipment just to take advantage of a free OS.

This is using the assumption that there are some Mac dominated school districts in California. I live in Western New York and there are quite a few here. There are also a lot in Wisconsin I believe.

Most of the school districts out there already have licenses for Microsoft software, whether it be an agreement with Microsoft or just buying all the licenses. It is the poorer districts that would benefit the most. Most don't have the technology budget to upgrade their OS. They also get secondhand computers dontated from local businesses. This would at least allow IT managers to upgrade the OS and possibly free up some money to buy new hardware.

On the plus side, those PC districts will have upgraded OSes, potentially reducing the worm / virus clutter on the internet.

I don't think that Apple would be losing a foothold in the poorer districts -- they already have by virtue of the majority of computers donated are NOT Apples. This is a result of the low marketshare that Apple has in the business community as well as the higher resale value of their computers. Businesses are more likely to keep or sell Apples than to dontate them.

Bottom line, I don't think this will harm Apple at all. This will, however, eliminate OpenSource software as an option for districts seeking lower priced software solutions. If Mircosoft is giving away free licenses and your whole district is Microsoft based, why even consider switching to OpenSource?

20 Minutes for a 17MB file? I hope you were exaggerating. Are you sure there isn't a network involved in the copy somewhere? I have a 733 G4 and a 20MB copy takes about 3 secs.

I like macs because of the way the UI is organized. I always seem more productive when using the mac. I have a MUCH faster pc (2.66gHz), and honestly, while the PC is more responsive, it slows me down. I keep it around for games, really. The mac is where I do my work.

On the flip side, the UI of OS X is still incredibly clunky. By clunky, I mean it eats up more processor / memory than it should. Certain things such as iTunes, Apple's Java support, iPhoto, and Macromedia's entire suite (inc. the flash plugins) run abismally slow sometimes. And I don't want to hear about how Java is inherently slower, blah, blah, blah. I know that, but I can run a java app in Virtual PC on my mac faster than running it on that same mac! The issue is that Apple has done a very poor job of optimizing their code. Apple elects instead to produce a glittery look and feel to catch people's eyes. This is just their business choice. Microsoft decided to go the route of make it run first, then add the flair (or fix the bugs). In a predominently Wintel market, Apple has to use other means to attract customers.

Basically, the Apple UI, while resource intensive, gets my work done faster. I feel bad that you have had as many problems as you have had with macs. Whatever you prefer is whatever you prefer. I can only offer my opinion.
