  2. go verilog on VHDL or Verilog For Learning FPGAs? · · Score: 1

VHDL is powerful but is too general. Basically, you can make the language do whatever you want, (not just limited to gate code, but any sort of modeling or computation, period), but it's a pain in the ass to do it. Pretty much all the operators and symbols (even '1', '0', 'h', etc) need to be defined before you can do anything, making it a feat to actually get work done. Well, there are standard libraries for stuff, but there are issues with multiply defined symbols and stuff in different libraries.

VHDL is very verbose and requires a lot of boilerplate code to do the simplest tasks. That said, it does scale reasonably well.

I think Verilog is more specifically geared toward FPGA gate code, and so it's a lot simpler to use. You don't have to fight the language like in VHDL. Go Verilog.

Shannon entropy isn't the same thing as randomness. It's a measure of balance of the distribution. You could have a high entropy generator that is very unrandom, say, one that basically alternates between outputs. Or you could have a truly random distribution that favors some outputs over others, but completely unpredictably.

  13. huge Windows community on Ubuntu 9.04 For the Windows Power User · · Score: 1

Ubuntu is more useful than Windows out-of-the-box, with more useful apps and a more efficient interface. But, it's easy to tweak Windows to a point where it is more powerful than Ubuntu.

Windows has a large number of annoyances and the user interface is very inefficient. But, thanks to a huge community, there are downloadable tweaks, customizations, or power tools. You can add VWM functionality. You can use Powershell. You can replace the explorer shell with something like Litestep if you want.

Windows has an unfair advantage. Basically, every power app that Linux has has been ported to Windows. But there are a lot of Windows power apps which don't exist for Linux.

Most of the annoyances of Windows have some workaround that someone already figured out. Many of the annoyances in Linux haven't been fixed yet and require you to patch it yourself. It's simply due to a larger community that Windows has.
