  1. sample/remix on Web Snapshots Are Nabbed for Commercial Uses · · Score: 0, Troll

Why does the slashdot community have a problem with this, but not with sampling and remixing in the musical context? Is sampling more or less "ethical" if commecial recordings are used (without permission) as source? How about "found sound"? What if the the dog snapshot referred to in TFA was sufficiently manipulated? How different from the original would it have to be before recognized as art on its own merits?

    Right, except... from TFA:

But underscoring how difficult it is to completely erase ones digital footprints, the information typed by users of AskEraser into Ask.com will not disappear completely. Ask.com relies on Google to deliver many of the ads that appear next to its search results. Under an agreement between the two companies, Ask.com will continue to pass query information on to Google. Mr. Leeds acknowledged that AskEraser cannot promise complete anonymity, but said it would greatly increase privacy protections for users who want them, as Google is contractually constrained in what it can do with that information. A Google spokesman said the company uses the information to place relevant ads and to fight certain online scams.

Foldable is pretty important though - it's one of the most convenient qualities of paper. Otherwise, you have a stripped-down PDA, no matter what the marketing department says.

"Effortlessly" for me would have to involve some sort of wireless, and, being USA-centric here, the only *currently* reasonable solution is Ev-Do. Which is a pig relative to power, though Wi-Max or municipal Wi-Fi (yeah, right) are even worse (and have another fatal flaw in that they don't exist).

When the display can be folded and put into a pocket, when I am able to read all of it on a single charge, when I can effortlessly pull down background info from varied sources - let me know, I'll be buy 10 of them.

  7. Re:legitimate transactions? on Attacking Criminal Networks On the Internet · · Score: 1

Certainly difficult, but not impossible, evidenced by the fact that extortion racket still exists, as does the money laundering business. But I do agree with you that the difficulty is probably more or less directly proportional to the resources of the victim.

On a smaller scale, this could also be targeted against individual participants of said marketplace, or groups, for example those that sell a certain type of product or service.

  8. legitimate transactions? on Attacking Criminal Networks On the Internet · · Score: 2, Interesting

How long before the criminals turn around and use the same tools to disrupt legitimate (read: legal) marketplaces? More complex than a crude DDOS, more customizable, allows for a larger Profit!!! potential.
