What exactly does "getting linux into the bios" mean? Hardware compatability factors? Booting options to do away with lilo, etc? Do we even *use* the PC BIOS after booting? (I thought we did not...)
I wonder which day GOD created these worlds? And did He build a firmament above them as well? I eagerly anticipate the tripe I'll hear about this in the local xtian media.
Well the people who work in these hotels doubtless have wordprocessing, and payroll and so on. It would be easier for me to train people to use CRT or whatever than to train them to use CRT, StarOffice, GnuMeric, and whatever accounting packages that don't even exist yet, they probably want to print, they sure don't want to learn TeX... or even what lpr is...
Okay, so bring it on... What full-charge accounting systems are available for linux? Don't write to me about CBB. QuickBooks and Peachtree probably work fine under VMWare, but that doesn't count.
Point is, there is a whole world of software that hasn't been touched by the free software community, nor even developed *for* the free platforms... Probably because it lacks interest for technologists. We have a surfeit of applications that are useful to technologists (various nerds) (you), but we are talking about the desktop application market... So who's working on accounting, billing, ledger, payroll and ics systems? These are things that really do need to be mature before suits will buy them. I don't think I'd base a real business' inventory or trial balance on beta software. I'm not trying to pull MS vs. AlternativeOS strings here, just realizing out loud that the sort of computerization desired in a business like a hotel might not be provided in the current free software idiom. The accounting software for Windows isn't that good either! (so don't take this comment the wrong way!)
Good story, Bruce, but it did not mention what international law enforcement agencies to contact. I am not going to write to Swatch about it. If they are breaking an international treaty, then Switzerland needs to take action against the perpertators, as do the other countries signed to the treaty, correct?
So do you think all this FUD will stop the Free Software community from ever releasing a complete, working unix-like OS with applications and network infrastructure?
Do you think that the FUD will prevent widespread acceptance of such a system?
We have really needed a system like that for a long time. Maybe someone in Europe (even a student, perhaps?) could work on something like this.
If it were freely distributed with a source license requiring redistribution of modified source, maybe it would catch on despite the efforts of commercial interests to squash it.
Alas, nobody will ever do anything like that so I guess we're stuck with Microsoft and commercial Unix. *sigh*
>What is most frightening is that people will >believe this junk.
Frightening how? Frightening to whom? Afraid of what?
That all this FUD will keep something like Linux or GCC from gaining widespread acceptance? That millions of people will not adopt public software out of fear, or willingness to be controlled?
It isn't news. We already won. The revolution these pundits are hoping to forestall, already happened a few years ago. Unless somebody develops a time machine (one that goes *backwards*) there isn't much to worry about. The free software is out there. Whether the mainstream commercial world can deal with it is irrelevant. Whether linux kills microsoft is totally irrelevant.
They did not stop the public software from being released, and whether or not we use it, and whether or not industry X adopts it, and whether or not there is widespread acceptance of it... Was irrelevant... But guess what?
Perhaps, they are contractually enjoined from releasing source by another party. Where, even if they wanted to, they couldn't?
Besides, if *YOU* have the skill and the time and the talent and the motivation to work on a *compiler* or a C++ library, apply that energy to egcs!!! We already HAVE an opensource project that ought to be enough to keep anybody busy.
He's been saying this for a while. Why doesn't he just put the working code out there in a cvs repository. What's all this "waiting for a preliminary release?"
I'm scratching my head as I walk through this bazaar...
WOW, being compared in the High End Realm!!!

Wow. We're being evaluated according to high-end criteria! This is *good* news. So we're not doing so well against supercomputers! Hooray!
"imagine" running a 32MB VM on my computer? I'm *doing* it. It's *FINE*. Granted, I have plenty of RAM to work with, but it's getting the job done. The performance is acceptable to me. Not breathtaking, mind you.
>So why are people still using Microsofts >products? Are they stupid? Stubborn?
I use Linux as my primary system at home and at work. I have been involved in Linux for quite some time, and immersed in it since 1.0.9. I have Applixware, StarOffice, and WP8. I use VI as my primary tool. I am an accomplished, vastly talented, and internationally recognized authority on the system. A bearded guru, if you will.
HOWEVER. I use MS WORD and EXCEL from OFFICE 97. Since last Thursday I use them under VMWare, under AfterStep, under XFree86 3.3*, under Linux 2.2.5.
Why do I use it? Because I am too lazy to layout my envelopes, labels, business cards, and sheet music with TeX or whatever. I sincerely wish Word would save postcript (portably), but, oh well. I'll probably keep using it, as I will continue to use Quicken. Especially now that I have a cool geek factor engendered by how well it all runs under VMWare. So it's an expensive, proprietary application layer on top of a free, but not apolitical, os. It works for me. Are there people who would scowl at one for wanting to keep zsh, textutils and find, as well as those?
Why am I this lazy? Because the tools to do the job easily are there, and they happen to be an expensive, proprietary solution, that happens to have been provided for me. Except for political concerns, I can objectively embrace this software. It is excellent software, from a software technologists point of view. There are certainly modes of operation for which Word is unacceptable. An applications development platform is one of them, and that is what leads to situations like Melissa.
In order to keep my sanity, I must separate my political from my professional life. I can merge my artistic life with my professional life, but not politics.
What if we all take the virus (I have a copy if you need one), and intentionally distrubute it, making sure to commit the same crime as Smith. Then, they have to arrest us all.
The human slashdot effect. We can shut down the country. The whole freaking legal system.
I want to say "gunnew" because if you say it "gnu" it sounds like "new" which doesn't really help the cause (the OS is MATURE.) But GUN-NEW sounds STUPID in my dialect of English. I just don't like it for Aesthetic reasons, not political.
Mr. Stallman, do you want FREEDOM, or do you want CONTROL? I don't think you get both in the same word.

Next what?
Next to be requested to change something,
or next to brainlessly, spinelessly cave

Don't they realize that obeying this insane

I'd say "stable".
2.2.5 is working great on my HP Kayak (which

see how it does on the Sparc. Wish me luck!
Do you really think there are people who know
"GNU" means "Free" who don't know "Linux" is "Free" as well?
