And don't forget the wireless and LCD backlight. Those are other major contributors of power utilization. Hopefully OLED will help resolve the latter.

Actually, there is already an alternative to CCFL backlighting on LCDs. One of Sony's ultraportable laptops uses an array of white LEDs to backlight the LCD display. I don't recall just how much power savings, but apparently some, and as another plus they were able to make the display substantially thinner. Tom's Hardware has a nice review of the laptop.

I may be in the minority, but I bought my nano because it is a kickass device, not because Apple's service is great (I haven't had any experience with their customer service).

    (5) True. But what the IT industry really needs is another Syquest or Iomega to come along and define a storage-centric format -- without all the bullshit politics surrounding Hollywood and video game consoles, and the enormous license royalties involved.

I'm going to have to disagree with you from a historical(?) standpoint. How many people today used Iomega or Syquest drives/media. I've never owned either type, and I dont know many that do/have. For whatever reason, it's like the industry figures if it's not proprietary it's not worth adopting.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I think many people look to Free (libre) Software because it is often Free (gratis). Honestly, I guess I'm a leech too, I run Firefox and GAIM, and I have made no contributions (monetary or otherwise) to either project.

  6. Re:CPRM is like JEDEC on Film Studios Sue Samsung Over DVD players · · Score: -1

Samsung is the bad guy here. Well, insofar as Rambus was the bad guy in JEDEC.

I think you are making a poor analogy. As I understand it, Rambus tried to screw everyone else at JEDEC with SDRAM standards. They provided technology that was incorporated into the SDRAM standard (stuff that Rambus had patents on) and then tried to collect money from the other JEDEC members because they were using Rambus's IP (they did not represent these contributions as being patented/whatever initially). Here, Samsung is violating a standard agreed upon, they aren't hitting up other DVD player manufacturers for money to keep making DVD players because they provided patented technology for the DRM. I just checked wikipedia and I'm not exactly right, but your analogy still looks improper.

How often do you buy graphics cards/upgrade processor? I know I can't afford to go out and by the latest Ati/Nvidia Radeon Geforce 76800 GTXr Ultra Pro XT every time they come out with a new one (6 months? 1 year?). Also, commodity prices? I bought a 7800GTX when it came out (upgrading from a Geforce 2 GTS)... it set me back $500. Even the 7800GT now is probably around the $300 range, hardly cheap. Consoles in a way, are a very good thing if you don't have a lot of change to throw around... you buy the platform and then your costs are limited to new games (and perhaps accessories). With a PC, if you want to keep up, you'll be paying a pretty penny.

  8. Tired of waiting for real competition on The Problems with Broadband in America · · Score: -1

I think that to a large extent, the government has failed to properly regulate broadband services to allow competition. Many areas have just one cable Internet provider and one DSL provider. I'm very unfortunate in that I live about 10mi out from the nearest town of any real size. The really funny thing is, I keep harassing our telephone company about offering DSL where I live, and recently found out that they buried fiber in my neighborhood, but stopped only about 1mi inroads, and my house is still connected to the old lines(copper). There are far more houses in the section where I live. But, it's ok, they can be stupid and not lay the wire the rest of the way. I mean, it's not like someone else will do it and get my business instead.

There's something seriously wrong with the state of telecommunications services in the US. We have multiple long distance carriers, why not multiple local phone companies, multiple DSL compaines, multiple cable companies. Doubtless, there are some places in the USA that have multiple providers for some of the above services, but for the most part, when it comes to broadband Internet, you have two choices: A) one Cable provider B) one DSL provider. So much for this wonderful thing called competition that is supposed to make our economy run efficiently. I for one am pissed about the state of our telecommunications and think our government might just be run by the damn corporations now.
