Sure, they look cool.. but are they really necessary?
yes they are, and here's why:
- more features == more potential bugs
- more bugs == more people calling helpdesk
- i hate to sound like these 1-2-3-profit people, but:
- profit
still lacking ogg support. The 'new' GUI looks more bloated than before, and what's up with this sudden support for Napster?
Also, why do companies think that making an app look like fruitella is better? So far the only reason why i ever installed WMP is because of the stick figure plugin/theme/whateverMScallsIt.
No, if you want a decent media player for windows, then i recommend using media player classic, which has all the (important) features and none of the extras that you can live without.
this could very well be the best way to attack microsoft's monopoly: giving away free hardware AND free software! Prolly the helpdesk costs $50/minute:P
But one problem that Schwartz wants to avoid is having Solaris splintered into different distributions like Linux, which he said creates application incompatibilities
Application incompatibilities? I've never heard of an application that will run on, for example, RedHat but not on Slackware (unless it's a package ofcourse, but even then you have rpm installers for non-rpm based distros).
Despite the fact that these are theories and not proven whatsoever, isn't it a bit obvious if on a weekday morning you enter your office and find microphones pointed at your keyboard? Why not place camera's instead? Or how about a person looking over your shoulder?
Simple workaround for this 'security' issue: turn up the radio.
Now all you'll need is that the car will include a red button that, when pressed, will send your location to Coca Cola and a person comes to deliver you a ice cold can of coke!
Actually, $5 x 12 x 3 = $180. While a WinXP pro costs about $270. And this is only if you have RH Desktop for 3 years. Seems a very nice price all in all.
Don't read reviews. Most of the times the author has an opinion and can influence your choice. If you want to know what distro best suits you, then you (and nobody else) should:
- download/buy
- install
- play with it
- remember what you liked about it and what not
- rm -rf /
- goto first step
After i used slackware 3.5 i heard about RH. I installed it, didn't like it, went back to slack, used it until 7.something, heard about Gentoo, installed it, liked it, used it ever since. But hey, that's just me. Maybe you'll stick with RH.

just a thought: the problem won't exist if all the 'solaris-distros' implemented a gentoo-like package system (portage)
