I've been thinking for some time now about buying a dvd recorder, but every time i think i've made up my mind, another toy pops up. New technology, better, faster, more reliable, better standard, you name it. How do i know which one to buy now? If i go for a DVD-R+ or -, or now for this blue ray thingie.. Can someone give me a good advice?
What can be an issue, however, is liquid crystal response time and in the VP2290b's case this comes in at 50ms (25ms rise, 25ms fall). At this speed, movement portrayed on the screen did smear which might be an issue for those where video editing and gaming is important. That said, the VP2290b hasn't really been designed with this sort of use in mind and its true focus is more about static image editing
so it's nice for photoshoppers and flash people (no, i'm not gonna say flashers with this subject), but that's about it.
but certain sites simply won't work on anything other than IE. So here's a small tip from a guy on securityfocus:
Copy the IE icon for all websites (eg. online banking) that require IE. Rename them to 'ABN Bank' or whatever and if you want you change the icon too. Than make the other browser the default one.
It's a pity that the standard reaction to a flash site is usually "Damn huge flash! I don't need this crap, just content. I refuse to open a flash site" , when some of them are really nice.
I agree that having a 'skip intro'-button inside a flash animation in stupid. A good Flash site should always warn before loading the swf. And with an intro it should have the option to skip the intro by clicking on an html link.
The most horrible site i've seen so far is loading a 5MB (!!!) intro (!!?!) with no option to skip before loading, and an even bigger main site. Horrible. This is what anti-flash people grab as argument when you discuss flash vs plain html.
But not all sites are like this. Some sites actually look alot better in Flash. And aside from content: if something looks better, it might also read better, which makes the whole site.. better. IMHO ofcourse.
i strongly disagree. I'd said you _should_ go for slack and learn the hard (best) way. Anyone can install a package by rpm, but the real kick is when you got an entire system up and running, and you./configured && compiled everything yourself. You know where what has been installed and what it does. Something i find lacking when dealing with rpm's. It's easier, yeah. But is it better?
whenever i need to test a printer for printing colors, i just browse to google and hit the print button. it's alot faster than the standard windows testpage:D
and some more props: last friday afternoon there was a server problem. Found the solution on google. So thanks to google i was able to enjoy a warm meal:)
and don't forget the releases of Scream Tracker (later made obsolete by Impulse Tracker), pure assembly programming, Gravis Ultrasound cards and ofcourse the total lack of internet, so you'd be forced to dial in to some obscure BBS and hopefully you didn't ran out of credit before you downloaded all the demos (pkzipped or rar'd ofcourse). *snif* i need a hug... too many emotions playing up again
www.scene.org has alot of (archived) demos for download. Most of 'm nowadays use directx and are only for win*, but i remember older demos like the ones from Future Crew etc ran in plain dos. Ahhh, memories of loading samples into your GUS:)
So just to make sure: the scene (i'm assuming you mean Assembly) didn't die. Check their site out. Pretty amazing demos.
late 1999 / begin 2000 companies hired alot of IT people, to help fix/discover/manage y2k-bugs. After that they found out that all these people were actually not needed anymore, but couldn't so easily be fired. That's why IT jobs in here are finally becoming a little more available. But the salaries? For every IT position, there's at least 10 people qualified for it. Companies know this, so what they do is hire the youngest/cheapest person. And so what if that person doesn't have the skills? Simply put him/her on a course.
As for cool videogames, ever tried Angband? It doesn't _only_ work in linux though, so maybe this is not what you mean. Maybe Tux Racer is more to your liking:)
IE isn't bad at all. If you're not concerned with popup-blocking, tabbed browsing, or soulless browsers, than IE is probably great for you. For everyone else who'd like to be more 'in control' of their surfing behaviour there's Mozilla (among others ofcourse - please don't respond all you opera-lovers:p)
99 eurocents per song might seem expensive. But how many of you haven't bought a cd because you liked some songs, only to find out later you really don't like the rest of them? Then the option of legally owning the few songs you *do* like isn't so bad.
Btw, is it illegal to download the cdcover of the full cd if you bought only a couple of tracks?
or hotmail: i found out the hard way when i tried to login to my account and saw a msg of something like "An account has been reserved for you!". Very cool indeed - not! Where's my older mail? Trashcan? Nope. Permanently gone. If the new GMail has a similar policy, then the 1GB deal isn't going to do it for me. What i'd really like to see is a no-time-limit account with a smaller storage for example.
Or, maybe newbies are just people like you and me who once wanted a better OS than what commonly available, and switched to linux. When i was a newbie, i always thought it was arrogant to say that i was better off using windows.
Just don't call every newbie the same. Alot of them want to learn more, but are held back by people like.. well, like you.
No offense ofcourse:)
(now mod me down - i deserve it. unsensitive bastard that i am)
if you just NEVER use your primary email address on a website! Setup a free one (www.spamgourmet.com / www.gmx.net / www.hotmail.com / others) and use that if you have to fill out your email address somewhere.
Never believe anything in a spam email. Especially not those lines that say 'click here to remove yourself from this list'.
Don't use Outlook (and variants) that make use of the Windows Address Book. Most worms that spread through email check your address book for email addresses. If the address book is empty, it won't send emails.
And slap anyone who puts your email address in a 'forward this to all you know'-email:P
Educating people before they operate a pc? Nice idea! Every helpdesk employee will immediately agree with you. Unfortunately that's never going to happen, unless the order comes from your goverment. It would be great if all pc's sold today are shipped with the latest virusscanner and anti-adware software, that you HAD to keep up to date if you want to use your pc. It would be nice too if people visited the windowsupdate site at least once a month. It would be even nicer if people turned off all HTML mail.
yeah... and it would be nicest of all if people RTFM before operating *anything* that comes with a manual. But people are lazy and the choice between a shiny new pc and a 'thick' manual full with boring words, is easily made.
actually, how about burning an extra 49GB of movies on the dvd, next to knoppix :) Bootable, portable cinema set!

if people over here (holland) see that there's 1m available, they'll try to fit another car in :P

when everyone knows that they're really designed to make that cool rotating 'busy' symbol in dos

more likely is that they're blocking gmails because it might become more populair than their own services.
If GMail is blocked by alot of providers, how many users will want to sign up?

Nice column about the flaws of IE compared to Mozilla.
Now, maybe someone could create a knoppix type distro that has some super cool video game that only works on linux.
:)
Or better yet: make it yourself
As for cool videogames, ever tried Angband? It doesn't _only_ work in linux though, so maybe this is not what you mean. Maybe Tux Racer is more to your liking

and how soon was it before somebody said the P-word when another mass-storage article hit slashdot? 3 seconds? four?
you forgot to add 300 random english words :P
Modern phones have infrared, right? So what if you combine the worm with this idea? >:)

so now they can put the money they save into the burgers and make them look less transparent?
