  1. Gadget-oriented point of view, missing the *needs* on Building the Dream Google Smartbook · · Score: 1

I suspect most of us on /. would NOT go for a netbook conforming to the article.

What about the weight ? The battery life ? The compact and lightweight charger you can carry in your jacket pocket without a doubt ?

The article doesn't cover the essentials, just the crunchy bits, the gadgets that would seduce the masses.

I certainly hope those gadgets won't get to us at cost of battery-life, not-so-useful functions, failure in case of a fall ("operate in in the palm of left hand, just typing that list before it gets out of my mind... oops." ).

I think people would go for a shiny feature-packed netbook. But what people *need* is certainly more than a gadget. Want to sell ? Make shiny stuff and a lot of buzz, that should do it. But what people who don't buy computers easily ask to the nerds around is "Will it be reliable ?"

The only reason we have international laws is to make people "feel better" about global geopolitics. But they're not actually real laws. They're more like "the best of intentions."

Like human rights, right ? (pun not intended) The human rights are just a way to make nice people sleep better to you ? Are you such a fan of the US government that you forget the stronger is not always right ?

May you take a minute to think about the factor from 150 murders and the thousands of deaths in Iraq ? May you consider the stronger one sometimes just has to remind everyone he is, but not necessarily beating them on the head? That is called "diplomacy" and comes against the "bath of blood" option.

The point is, even here on /., Bush and his fellows made it fine. Everybody is talking about (poor) M Hussein, and almost no-one remenbers all the fuss was about Bin Laden in the first place. Remember the target swapping ? See how the Justice is well done ? When the one who made the WTC fall down and kicked the US ego is free, while the relatively unharmful tyrant who cared about his own business in Iraq is being sentenced to death.

I am really sorry. For Sadam, because I think death penalty cruel and inefficient, for the world because we will soon wipe it away from our memories, for the soldiers and the innocents who died without really knowing for what they gave their lives. To me it all looks like dolls theatre played with people as dolls and cutting the wires by the dozen.

The huge lawyerpower they use to bring down pirates can strike blind, and is so powerful you just can't do a thing.
So if this case arises, and is found , in France you just get automagically sued and fined by the system. This way you just check you're honest before suing people.

French is my native language. English seemed quite easy to me, and I'm no genius.
It's easy to conjugate (you don't have that much irregular verbs, believe me), there is no declination (sp?) stuff like there is in German, the phonetics are quite consistent, whatever you say (in french, the W in sandwich and the one in wagon are not even pronounced the same), and for what I peeked of the chinese language, there is no accent stuff either in english (4 pronunciacions for a syllab in cantonese, correct me if i'm wrong, with a different meaning each), and the alphabet is quite easy to get a grip with (26 letters, no acutes (e.g., éàèûôùâ). come on), and the grammar is easy (try learn french freakin' tense concordance rules, and if you put 3 correct sentences with "bien que" and "malgré" and "après que", you deserve a crown).

To the point fo the bulletin, I firmly believe for those reasons that the english language is (one of) the easiest languages to learn (for a grown-up, that is).

I do abhor people lacking respect to a language, because to me, a language is the ulimate expression of a culture. That's why I try to spell my english correcly, even here on /., and that's why I abhor people spelling badly. Especially their own language. People trying to get attention on a bulletin board, who don't even have respect toward their own cultural background. That really scares me.

BTW : I do understand good english grammar used by scottish people. That's because I care.

Actually, I read the second part of your post on a refresh, and I guess you won't read further than the second line. Maybe to people who are as arrogant as you are, "french" would suffice to make my post ignored.

The fact that Google comes from and anglo-saxon cultural background and that the libraries that share their information are mostly american (maybe only american) somehow threatens the european cultures.
It's obvious that people will search books first on Google. It't obvious that some of those people will not be native english speakers. They (the "counter" forces) do not want theyr culture to be flooded and ultimately erased by an bunch of books from another culture.
I think the point is only to allow readers to find the books they look for, whoever they are. And, ultimately, they could (I hope) share their database of books with google, to spread also the other cultures.
What I read here on slashdot must be posted mostly by americans, so it is natural some of you miss the point. It IS a good idea from google, it will probably give great benefit to the culture of the world to have free and easy access to books.
