  1. Tools to make tools on Do Tools Ever 'Die?' · · Score: 1

My Grandfather was a mechanical engineer. He made many tools to help make other tools. I've seen many of them, and they were custom one-of-a-kind things. I'm certain that at least some of those are no longer in use anywhere (his certainly are not - they're in storage). Others may have come up with similar tools, but their limited use combined with evolving technology means they probably aren't in use anywhere anymore (at least some of them).

One of these days, I'd like to catalog what's left of them. It's an interesting looks into both how things were done, and specifically into what one of my ancestors did.

I didn't intend to follow in his footsteps (didn't try not to either), but I find myself playing a similar role in software development - making the (software) tools that the other devs use to make the product.

  3. Re:That's Not What The Article Says on First-Sale Doctrine Lost Overseas · · Score: 1

You have the right to say you painted it. The purchaser has the right to cut it up into pieces, or paint over the whole thing, or burn it, etc. And, they have the right to turn around and sell a pile of ashes that used to be your painting. They can also resell it unmodified to anyone else.

The only real limit is that they do not have the right to place their name over yours (or cut yours off), put their name on it, sell it, and claim they created the entire thing. The final bit is the only really important part. They can do everything up to claiming they created it while selling it... that's false advertising (I'm sure there's a proper legal term for it) and plagiarism.

Note, I'm not claiming anything you said was inaccurate... but I think this is still quite clear cut.

  4. AND CHEESE! LOTS AND LOTS OF CHEESE! on NASA Strikes Gold and Water On the Moon · · Score: 1

I've heard loads of these "there is water" "there isn't water" on such and such place over the ages, and I'm starting to be a bit of a doubting Thomas. They have yet to examine any of this stuff in-hand, or even in-robot-hand. We can send multiple robots to mars... where's the one picking up the gold on the moon? What are we waiting for? Bah humbug.

From the touchpad article, "I can’t wait to get hold of one", and later, "It’s made with smooth, wear-resistant glass that feels great to the touch."

and it ships in 24hours... so it's not like a real review should be very difficult!

Would be better of just to post the apple store page directly. Horrible.

I have an agp nvidia geforce 7600gs that does dual-link dvi. Not all of them do, but they did make some that did (newegg doesn't have any w/ agp, but their pci-x ones state max-res 2560x1600 w/ dual-link dvi, which should prove the chipset can do it). Got it running my 30" at 2560x1600. (well, at least it was until last month. I upgraded everything, and now it sits idle in my old computer).

  11. Automatic recharging on New Electrolux Trilobite 2.0 Vacuum Robot · · Score: 1

10x's the price of a Roomba may be a bit steep, but this thing can automatically recharge itself, and keep sweeping.
If it could empty itself too, it'd almost be worth the price (especially for places like restaurants and such).
