And by masquerading as IE on a regular basis for even sites that are Firefox friendly, they're helping screwball webmasters feel good about blocking alternative browsers, and making responsable webmasters feel bad about even bothering. Definately not a good thing.:D
They're half right, that's why I always M2 everything redundant as unfair.
Hmm...the idea is to moderate, not automate. If you take post times into account, there are people who have obviously reposted things in an attempt to karma whore, because there's no way they couldn't have seen it (a.k.a. same thing posted freakin 4 hours after prior art, as opposed to a reasonable 1-10 min span).
Too true. A guy at the office has been having SO many problems with his computer. I redid the machine from the ground up for him, and put Firefox on there, told him to tell everyone to just use Firefox unless completely necessary. Well, they just kept on using IE anyway, and their computer is all screwed up again. Guy said his sons said "UHHHhhh I don't know how to use this..."
Firefox is amazingly simple, but I guess IE really hasn't changed (from the (l)user's point of view) since IE4, so people are hooked to that hard boiled interface.
Does that really matter? Safari for Windows means I can actually test websites on it. I use Linux, have access to Windows, but I don't have a Mac handy.
Me testing Safari -> My websites definately work on Safari -> Mac users happy -> Profit!!
One of the problems with PETA is the people push for legislation for punishment of people who hurt animals. I can see where they are coming from, but I find it rediculous all the same - everyone is guilty under laws like these. Ask yourself - how many times have you put down bug spray, sending these small animals to a prolonged, cruel and unusual (and unnatural) death. How many times have you swatted a fly, or crushed a mosquito? How many of you have hit an animal with a car and it didn't die instantly? (This includes those windshield bug guts).
Well, in order to differentiate, you have to determine which animals are "worthy", and the intention of the animal killer. Here's the PETA way : "If its cute and fuzzy, and the person was beating at it, he goes to jail. If its not cute and fuzzy, its not really an animal, its not "alive", its a bug and that don't count." I beg to differ. When I see a poisoned insect, it sure looks like it is in pain to me.
A similar issue is "hate crimes". Some one who is charged with a hate crime is being charged separately for the hate and the crime. Being charged with hate is neither being charged with a crime not being charged with planning a crime - emotion is the crime. Tie in: The basis for which animals you can hurt without penalty and those you can is stictly emotional. That is, a basis that does not belong in a fair and balanced justice system.
BTW: I'm gonna post the "CERT anti-IE" article all over the place tomorrow and see if I can get the whole office over to Firefox.:D
Yes they can. Or at least PowerSpec did. The last two I've seen had Netscape 6 bundled by default. Why not Netscape 7.1, or Mozilla, I dunno, but it was in there.
i have one windows computer and one doing my first ever stage1 install of gentoo... wish me luck
Good luck! Oh, when you get through the hand book, don't forget to hit up the Gentoo Linux Desktop Configuration Guide. Its easy to miss, and I sorta messed up my first install of Gentoo by not finding it/reading through it.
And I REALLY recommend using Knoppix to install. Once you're past emerging the system, you can reboot into knoppix, open up the root shell, and do the old:
# cd /
# mkdir gentoo
# mount/dev/hda3/gentoo
# mount/dev/hda1/gentoo/boot
# mount -t proc none/gentoo/proc
# chroot/gentoo/bin/bash
# env-update
# source/etc/profile
...And there you have your Gentoo system, pick up where you left off as if nothing happened. You can fire up Mozilla or play one of the included games while it compiles in the background. Very nice cause you dont have to get up for another computer to read the online handbook.
I forgot to add the info on that Firefox Plugins page:
"Disabling Plug-Ins for a file type will cause files of that type to be downloaded instead of viewed in the Plug-In."
Yeah, at that russian porno site that has that "XXXToolbar" XPI with the trojan-ware? Yeah, I've seen it, clicked no.
Err, but it pops up after the page loads. So, assuming you got to whatever form first hit, AND typed everything in under 300ms, AND then pressed enter at the right time...I guess it could happen, anything is possible.;)
Also, if you have a recent version of Firefox, unsigned XPI extension installs have a mandatory 3 second delay before you can hit the button.
Also, the page clearly states that it is testing mozilla in compatibility mode (no html headers)...uhm Mozilla is designed to fark up pages in compatibility mode, to be backwards compatable, and render more to the "de-facto" standard. Plus, many things listed on the page work as they should.
And, many things on there are rediculous...
"local hrefs not marked as visited"
This is a good thing. Prevents self referencing page links from being all marked visited, so you know what you click.
"comments not supported inside simple selectors"
Looks fixed to me.
"oblique rendered as italic"
If you peek at the CSS specs, it is up to the user-agent to decide what these are. They can be the same, or not...this is not an issue.
"line heights not correctly handled"
OK if you set line height to 0 (like they did) the fonts obviously will overlap:D
"sub and super move box, not baseline"
I peeked at the code....ya know I couldn't find
-moz-background-clip: initial;
or
-moz-background-origin: initial;
or
-moz-background-inline-policy: initial;
(which they used) anywhere in the CSS spec. HMM?
"text only flows around one side of a float"
maybe margin-left:100px on the float has something to do with it?
Heh I could sit here and poke holes in these tests all day. Biggest fundamental problem is the fact that they're testing complicated/convaluted/ludicrous CSS in quirks mode...anyone in a position to be using advanced CSS is gonna be sporting at least valid HTML 4 Strict. So really the point is moot.
I'm not so sure about this protection wording. I remember my teen years well...the only time I ran into porn is when I went looking for it.:D
For those of us who remember our childhood, porn is actually a healthy part of this balanced sexual and societal development. Why did women (and recently some men) start shaving their bodies? To compete with the porn stars. Keeping yourself presentable to the max is a sure way to maintain a good sexual relationship now and in the future. Learning that young can help. An older person would be less likely to start bothering with such things.
Firefox for OSX is sort of an afterthought, given Camino. If you look at the tree, there is going to be a separate Firefox branch just for OS X, that they'll work the bugs out on. I imagine that this branch and Camino will eventually merge somehow, I can't see why they'd keep working on two versions of basically the same thing.
And by masquerading as IE on a regular basis for even sites that are Firefox friendly, they're helping screwball webmasters feel good about blocking alternative browsers, and making responsable webmasters feel bad about even bothering. Definately not a good thing. :D
Well, remember those IE extenstion freewares, such as CruftyBrowser, AwanaBrowser, and MyEyee2
If it was compiled with svgalib, you have a non-X-required graphical browser (something I had been hunting for, for a while)
# links -g
"X"? "Kernel"? I never knew Windows ran XFree... *Busted!*
If you click that in Internet Explorer you get a blue screen. How about that!
I read about that while searching for Mozilla easter eggs.
Have you upgraded to 0.9.1 yet? No problems that I can see.
Send them this link: http://www.apptools.com/phptools/browser/index.php

I understand it's supposed to be funny, but I honestly wonder what is wrong with PETA ?
:D

Sweet! Thanks!
Well, assuming Linux will have 20% desktop marketshare in 2008, I imagine eventually you'll be able to score a copy at Wal-Mart/Best Buy/[Your Local Computer Store Here].
err...live DVD that is... :D
I wonder if there's gonna be a Knoppix version that takes advantage of this...
/*cue old time movie dream scene harp*/
:D
"All new Knoppix 6.0! Every Linux distribution can now be tested on a bootable live CD!
I forgot to add the info on that Firefox Plugins page: "Disabling Plug-Ins for a file type will cause files of that type to be downloaded instead of viewed in the Plug-In."
Using Firefox 0.9.1:
:D
Tools -> Options -> Downloads -> Plugins
You can disable and enable plugins here at will.
So if a site requires flash for navagation, turn it on. For the rest of your browsing, turn it off.

Could you post those that list of IE/Windows exploits? I'd like to have similar ammunition, but I'm too lazy to look it all up ;)
