I prefer CD's only as I want quality and freedom. I like to have the right to rip them to FLAC and put them on my iAudio X5. DRM and compressed downloaded music just does not make sense. Quality over Quantity I always say.
I have to say I am surprised by the reaction to the device.
1. It doesnt have SIM!!! No.. because there is no need. That's and extra added expense that not everyone will be able to use. If you want cellulare internet use its bluetooth connection.. that's why its there!
2. Ugly UI. Only a MAC user would say that. I don't know about you but I think the UI is perfect, its slick, polished and no fuss no muss. I think AQUA is ugly.
3. VoIP/Phone capability. It wasnt meant to be a phone... look at it, its too big! It's a PDA, it's an Internet Tablet. It will have offical VOiP support from Nokia in the 2006 series firmware. That's great and all.
4. Third party apps/support Right now this is the amazing part, there are tons and tons of applications for it for free obviously. It's so easy to get going with the official SDK. This device is simply amazing on the third party front.
5. Screen quality The screen is 800x480, any website that was meant for 800x600 (allmost of them!) can be viewed without side scrolling on this beautiful screen. It's great having such a high res screen.
The best thing is... its not a PSP thats been HACKED 6 ways from sunday to have some sort of functionality. It natively runs Linux and has corporate support. Nokia is committed to this device, and it has sold like hot cakes everywhere. The 770 can only get better, and who knows what the "880" will hold!
Any doubts you may have, go to a CompUSA and try it out at the Nokia display, it really is the greatest thing since sliced bread:).
I know it's going to have its problems... I have the Nokia 770, love it, checks e-mail, IM, web everything I want in the palm of my hand. It has bugs sure, but do I care? Nahh.. it's not that bad.
I just bought the GP2x because I want as many of my old classic Sega/NES/SNES games in my hand, with the D-PAD and those buttons it's made for this... This device was meant to be a game machine first, and a multimedia machine second. It doesnt even have wireless of any kind!
As long as I get my Sonic the Hedgehog, my LucasArts games, and my Mame in my hand.. It's worth the 299.99.
After 4 years, the development can die, as long as I have my hardware and my Sonic, it won't matter much.
It can do A. It can do B.. in fact I use B like this: IMAPS (Secure), SMTP secure (port 465) ssl, and it just works great! C can be done not out of the box... this is an internet tablet for end users not a development tool, but of course you can just install the SSH client/server package and the xterminal and your good to go! But thats understandable...
I was a day 1 zaurus owner and this is exactly what the Zaurus should have been but was not. Out of the box, you pop in the included 64meg memory card, turn it on, and boom right in front of my face is my web browser, my RSS reader and e-mail. Best of all since its Linux they support all the secure e-mail connections (tls, ssl, imaps everything) so I don't have to compromise my security while using it. It has a huge library for something that has only been out for a short while. It's package management is 100x better than the zauruses! I jump on WIFI or Bluetooth to my phone to the internet, browse to the maemo.org site, click a package and it asks to open it in the package manager! It uses Opera 8 with Flash support. Plays full screen videos just fine, and let me tell you the screen is incredibly bright and detailed!
Its a 800x480 display, just beautiful! Not to mention the browser is a full one! No PDA versions of web pages, no side scrolling. You can zoom in, browse history and book marks it works!
I installed very easily mind you, GAIM for IM, Doom a bunch of other little games, an xterm, they have SSH for it, and the library is growing!
Drawbacks: Occasionally, when using it not as intended, say using the not-ready or polished GAIM, or lets say loading up 20 web browsers, with your rss feeder in the background its going to run out of memory. This is an internet tablet, it has RSS feeder, web and e-mail and its all fully featured and ready to go out of the box. If you use it as intended it works and thats that!
Contrary to any reviews I have NEVER encountered any wifi flakyness or bluetooth crazyness. I have used it every day for about a week now, and it is just SOLID. Its design is slick as snot! check out the screen shots below, and check out nokias own site for the 770, its silver metal case and its included pouch is just awsome.
and of course, it runs linux! all my Ipaq and palm friends are very jealous!
The University of Rhode Island runs Gentoo from its Network Operations to Computer Science servers/workstations.
URI for its main webserver/mail server etc. (official URI server not department servers) run custom Linux stuff and a mix of Red Hat Enterprise (hey it works).
So many people are blindly switching to Gmail as their main E-Mail provider. There are security risks , known exploits (that have since been patched) but then again also the track record and privacy policy issues to look at here.
Google is not the be all end all company.
Google is a great search engine.. but GMail is just a fad.
The only E-Mail admin I trust is myself, which is why I run my own server.

I setup gentoo (KDE + all the usual apps) on a non techincal females computer who was fed up with Windows. She used Matlab, OpenOffice, k3b for burning cd's, XINE for DVD and the usual. The interface was easy to use, Firebird fills the IE gap and she hasnt used windows in over a month. She made an effortless transition over night. However she is an avid gamer. She likes her Warcraft games (All the latest Warcraft games). She bought cedega subscription and has NOT had a single problem!
Look at cedegas compatibility list. Any game with a 4 or above rating runs perfectly! Linux has PLENTY of games its just a lack of native support that I hope comes soon.
I DONT have to talk about Nvidia linux support (we all know its top notch) and I have faith in ATI that they will by summer have a SOLID driver released. They really are trying and they will get it right.
Linux has game.. and not just game but ZERO viruses, crashes, less bugs, more security I mean the list goes on.
Linux TRULEY is the greatest... and this is WHY I renew my FSS subscription every year.
Not because its a Mac.. I was raised by my dad to BUILD my machines custom from scratch. I was on a computer when I was 3 or 4, helping my dad build them when I was 10 or 11 and I always built them custom myself since then. I would never be caught DEAD with a Dell or Mac or any pre-built machine. (Today with the exception of maybe the nice nice workstations like that 12/96 cpu or a dual or quad IBM workstation..they are nice) but I could still build the opteron system.
As long as I have a choice as to what motherboard/video card I can buy and mix and match.. I will always build my computer. I am speaking as a Computer Science student to..
Any kids in my class who brag about their new Alein Ware gaming machine with Windows XP on it makes me really really sad..
If you cant build your own machine, you shouldnt get that degree!
Nick
Write down the MAC Address of your Laptop.
If yoru laptop gets stolen contact who ever runs the DHCP server on campus. They will be able to tell you what the last IP Address of the laptop was and where it was plugged in and when! (what dorm should depend on what subnet).
I have recovered laptops for people using this technique at my University sometimes finding it is plugged in right as we checked! Call the local cops and they bust right in and your laptop is back!

I switched BECAUSE of bloat.. I like the non-bloat of Ion, Pork, Mutt.
Ion3, Mutt, Pork.
Try doing that in windows.

Yeah and next thing you know GOOGLE is Logging your phone calls, recording your phone calls etc...
Indexing your address book...
Google's track record and current practices do NOT make me feel comfortable using them as my phone carrier.
