Actually Opera's motives are completely selfish. But they happen to advance mine which are aligned with the law.
Opera wants people to have to choose a browser because in that scenario there's a greater chance that they'll choose Opera. This is not in contradiction with the law.
I want people to choose Opera, Firefox, Chrome, anything-but-IE because it reduces Microsoft's monopoly. The law has antitrust laws because they realise that a monopoly results in less competition, which results in less choices for consumers which results in inferior products.
Look at how much IE changed in such a short time after Firefox gained some marketshare. This is because of increased competition. There would be even more changes if there was even more competition. However gaining marketshare against IE is an uphill battle because of their illegal practices.
1) Companies could send out CDs that have their browser. This use to happen back when Netscape and IE were competing against each other. 2) Companies can give away CDs to stores with the purpose of the store giving away the CD. This use to happen back in the day. 3) They can sell their browser in stores. Shock horror:o
Beta software isn't intended to be used on a permanent basis. However that's exactly what Google expects.
Google is either extremely arrogant. Or completely misuses the term beta in order to deflect criticism (something about on of their services no good? Don't worry, its just a beta).
Funnily enough my Dad has just recently switched to Firefox (due to security concerns of IE) while almost immediately I switched away from Firefox to Chrome. Nothing but a coincidence, but it is amusing that whatever browser the "masses" use (and my father is definitely one of them), I seem to migrate to a different browser.
Y'know I ran noscript for a couple of years. Then I switched to simply denying cookies.
Then I realised: 1) I have never stopped malware from hitting my computer due to the use of NoScript. 2) I'm not ashamed of the websites I go to, therefore I don't care if other people know what I visit.
So I can only ask, what sort of websites are you going to that you'll get malware and/or are ashamed to be known to visit them?
If you don't want the "donuts" don't click on the damn link. Because in this analogy the donate is the website you have visited. While the tip jar is the advertising that supports the website.
Do you really think that the only great musicians in all of human history were born in a span of a hundred years?
They're the only ones we know about.
Now might the Beatles one day be considered their equal? Possibly. Although I personally think the people who sung about living in a yellow submarine will be judged as to not qualify. But who knows. Perhaps marijuana will be legalised and everyone will think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Nuclear power has bad side-effects. You're simply replacing carbon that will cause problems now (global warming) to storing nuclear waste that will cause problems for thousands of years if it isn't kept carefully quarantined.
Which is better? I don't know. But simply saying nuclear power is the solution is ridiculous.
Because if you are unemployed you shouldn't have the internet. If you can't afford the Gas to drive to the unemployment office. You take bus or the subway or you get off your lazy ass and walk or bike. When I was poor I went to the library. I couldn't afford the $40/month for internet.
Catching the bus to the library every day would cost about $3 a day (conservative estimate). Assuming you're going to the library 5 days a week that's $60 a month. About what I pay for my internet connection.

how does one get one on their computer?

Is this a sign of the apocalypse?
XP is gone where?
I was afraid of that. Although given that the internet in Linux is unusable on my computer, nothing of value will be lost.
Speak for yourself. I'm quite interested in seeing if I should upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7.
Thanks dude.
Is IE 8 beta actually safe to use? Because last I heard IE 7 certainly wasn't.

We want the safety of noscript
Y'know I ran noscript for a couple of years. Then I switched to simply denying cookies.

So not only do you demand that ads not be served to you, you also require someone else to make sure it happens?
Just how damn lazy are you?
If you don't want the "donuts" don't click on the damn link. Because in this analogy the donate is the website you have visited. While the tip jar is the advertising that supports the website.
Actually I consider it on par with going into a donation-funded museum and deciding not to make a donation.
Sure, you can do it. But it aint being a good citizen to do it.
Sounds like you've got malware. Because I know my speakers never say that.
I can't find a single person above 15 who likes 2000's music. Why is that?
Because you weren't conducting a survey in a scientific manner? I know one person above 15 who likes 2000's music. Possibly even 2.
I don't pay much attention myself, as anything from the 90s onwards is rubbish.
Do you really think that the only great musicians in all of human history were born in a span of a hundred years?

Nothing says timeless like I am the walrus.
But you can say that by driving pollution-makers they are harming me physically.
As a fan of RPGs I just want to let you know the world isn't split into regular people and FPS fanboys.
Although I don't blame you for thinking it is. Your education system has made you constantly look at things as a selection of 1 out of 2.

Alright, that's $270m in 11 years time, with an increasing percentage of that in the intervening years.
How is that bad?
Because if you are unemployed you shouldn't have the internet. If you can't afford the Gas to drive to the unemployment office. You take bus or the subway or you get off your lazy ass and walk or bike. When I was poor I went to the library. I couldn't afford the $40/month for internet.

FYI: I constantly mistype stuff that makes absolutely no sense.
Do I have to join an army to be able to join a war?
