    I don't know how much, but here's a quote from TFA:

    evidence presented in the case showed that he received payment from the leader of the group in return for this work.

    So maybe there's a REASON for disregarding this law: it's used one-sided 2 wrongs do not make a right.

    This guy "stole" imaginary property. This guy infringed on copyright for commercial gain. Is there no line you people will draw? I hope your job deals with physical goods or services brianosaurus, because if you had your way everyone from authors to software developers would be forced to get a second job.

    Are you confusing copyrighted file sharing (fairly certain it falls under free speech) with unauthorised by the copyright holder file sharing?

    I used Ubuntu for 7 months with no Windows XP, ultimately it proved too difficult for me to continue using indefinitely so I went and bought myself a copy of Windows XP (just in time as well to get an OEM version). If I, a Computer Science student, prefer Windows to Linux, I don't think your average Joe stands much chance at being converted.

    If you can restrict where people can assemble, then so much for freedom of assembly. I'm in jail, I wish to assemble in front of a store on public ground. I can't do this. So much for freedom of assembly.

    Or it could be that criminals have some of their freedoms rights because they broke the rules we as a society govern ourselves by.

    Withdrawal of internet services would severely inhibit a number of fundamental freedoms So does being locked up in jail. Funnily enough that does withstand a court challenge.

    It would take more advanced maths then I know (I sometimes get stuck with 1+1), but I'm sure it would be possible to show (with a certain margin of error which should always be taken at its highest when dealing with court judgements) the impact of illegal downloading. It could be that without illegal downloading profits would be even higher, or they could be lower.

    Unfortunately anyone whose hired to create such an answer would be hired (or motivated by personal beliefs) and so any number they came up with would be heavily biased and so absolute rubbish.

    But theoretically a mathematician could do it accurately enough.

    Even if Office 2007 is better, are the extra features worth $110 (assuming you don't need ALL of the new features) or $400 if you actually do need all the new features? I know it isn't for me, and I'd love to know just how many people here on slashdot do actually need those extra $400 worth of features.

    Really? Can you point to the two continents called America? Because I've heard of North America, I'd have heard of South America. Hell, I've even heard of the Americas. But I aint never heard of a continent called America. Let alone a second one with the exact same name!

    How long do you think it would take a human to learn how to use the internet if they haven't been given a browser or the knowledge on the english (or any) language?
