  1. Natural (or other) disaster on Mobile Cell Phone Towers For Disaster Relief · · Score: 5, Insightful

This could be an incredibly useful technology. Anyone who had someone in New York/DC during 9/11 knows how difficult it was to get a hold of anyone that day. Aside from the fact that cell towers went down with the WTCs, Verizons CO (central office) was right next to Tower 1 and 2, knocking out quite a few landlines. Switching capabilities were compromised, leaving most of us with "All circuits are busy." In the future, deploy a few dozen of these and the cell phone capacity could ramp up rather quickly in an extreme event.

  2. Volvo S80 on EPA Fuel Economy Myth: Too High, Too Low? · · Score: 1

I've got a Volvo S80 T6. EPA is 19/26. Everyday I drive 100 miles, 90 of it on "highways" (see Upstate New York's definition of highways) and 10 through stop and go construction traffic. I get 24.6 MPG (digital read out on dash helps get it exact) on pretty much every tank. Note, the highway I drive on mostly are 55 MPH and you can always find at least one asshat going 50, or a tractor going 30. Also, it's very hilly (both up and down) so I suspect that evens it out.

  3. Re:Firefox IE Skin on New IE Malware Captures Passwords Ahead Of SSL · · Score: 1

The problem is, of course, when I tell them I've upgraded them, they'll find something that doesn't work and I'll catch the brunt of it. Or worse, they'll find IE and start using that again.

  4. Firefox IE Skin on New IE Malware Captures Passwords Ahead Of SSL · · Score: 2, Interesting

Is there a skin that acts exactly like IE? I'm looking to swap my family computers over and would like an IE interface. I've tried education to the family and it just hasn't worked really well. Tabs? What do they care? Adblocking? Who's got the time? They're just ads. Every feature I introduce doesn't really sell them. So basically, they would like to stick with Internet Explorer. However, clearly, I can't let them with all this crap flying around these days. That being said, I just want a way to make Firefox look like IE so I can do a swap. Anyone?

And now I have a really dirty joke in my head about the porn industry adopting "Open Sore" Software.

In practice much of the Internet's growth and technologies (e.g., streaming media) were sponsored and pioneered by porn sites. And the first sites that made money on the net... well, let's just say it wasn't the dot-coms with big IPOs.

Very true. In fact, they say that for any new technology to be adopted (WWW, VHS) the Porn industry has to buy into it first. They are the pioneers of profitibility. Stay on the bleeding edge of the porn industry and you'll stay on top of technology, oddly enough.

  7. No HD in XBox 2 on Tecmo Upgrades Ninja Gaiden Via Xbox Live · · Score: 1

So what happens when there is no HD in XBox2? Where do the patches get downloaded to? A memory card? Do I get to have a memory card patch for each one of my games now? Aye, this better not be the beginning of console games acting like PCs. The very reason I play console games is because they're not buggy and upgraded all the time -- I like that I just throw them in the XBox and they work, nothing else to worry about.
