What no one ever mentions in anti-GPL rants (and let's face it, MS is tredding well worn ground, here) is that the GPL removes NO rights from you

On the other hand, if a company releases its code under the GPL and then accepts code from outside contributors under the GPL, the company no longer has the option of selling the software under a commercial license. So while the GPL itself may not remove rights from the producers of a piece of software, the way it is often used (and supposed to be used) does.

A more likely problem is a potential buffer overflow in the code the client uses to communicate with the central SETI@HOME server. Then if someone were to spoof or break into the server, they would instantly be able to gain access to all computers running the SETI@HOME software. I don't know if such a hole is present in the SETI@HOME software, but remember when AOL intentionally exploited a similar hole in AIM?

With ActiveX enabled, any website visited using IE can ask to run or install software by popping up a single dialog. It would not be difficult for a malicious site to see to it that the dialog pops up just as you're typing 'y' on the keyboard or just as you're about to click where the "yes" button will appear. By disabling ActiveX and only installing software manually (downloading a .exe installer and running it), you give sites you visit one less way to break into your system/account.
