The other point about religion, politics and patriotism is that much of the world's history is based on some combination of these. It would be difficult to foresee the future and its direction without a clear understanding of the past.
The open source groups tend to think differently (financial gain not being at the forefront). Apache's stand on this reminds me a lot of how many sys admins modified their bind setup to block the sitefinder "service" our friends at Verisign tried to force down our throats not all that long ago. Someone has to try to keep the sanity.
I know/.ers tend to believe there is a conspiracy behind every bush, but there isn't in this case. The requirement (and the reason you can't change seats *after* boarding an airplane) is purely (as another said) to identify the corpses. Its for the insurance companies and pending lawsuits etc. It has *nothing* to do with the Patriot Act, your removal of civil liberties or anything else.
My wife uses KDE and with the recent version of Mandrake (10) she has complained about the speed as well. I've configured a bit of her system, and can say it *does* seem rather slow. I've always used Windowmaker, so its hard for me to see any difference from distro version to distro version.
But, the most lovely aspect of Linux remains; if you don't want to use something (or can't) you have options.

... is he will probably write a book about it, and get more money than spamming ever gave him.

Actually, it was Bill Paxton's line. I only wonder if a piss from that height on a hot day would even make it to the water.
