And the energy use of SUVs doesn't even hit a percentage point of the energy used to power trains, planes, busses, transport trucks, ocean liners or even the tankers that move the oil around the world. Don't let your land-lovin-tree-huggin hatred for the SUV blind you from the fact that there are MUCH bigger fish to fry. btw: My SUV gets 28 mpg. The minivan it replaced got 22 mpg.
I hear this one a lot. Guns to protect you from your government. Here is an idea.... load up whatever gun you've got, then call up the FBI (your government) and invite them over. Once they get there, shoot one of them. Let's see how well you do protecting yourself from the government.
I... (gulp, I know my karama is going to go to hell for this)... think IE7 is a nice step up. The two things I'm happy to see are transparent PNGs and the font rendering is much nicer. If that was all IE7 provided, then at least we can sit back and say all of our websites just got a facelift. Not exactly a bad thing.
And if it was an open source driver (like nv) it would be lacking in features and support that make your card worth the $200+ you pay for it. All you have to do is look at the openchrome project to see the benefit of oss drivers. They have no support from VIA, a lot of cards don't work at all and many that *do* work don't have all the features the windows (closed source) drivers provide. You would think that Linux users would just be happy that nVidia has Linux drivers at all (and keeps them under development).
The old one has got to go, so anything would be better. I like Johnson's design, but the second one has one element I really like; the dark background behind the individual story titles. Makes skimming much easier.
Protecting the country by sending your troops to the other side of the world? Saving the economy by having high levels of unemployment? Controlling government spending by running up the largest deficit in the history of the world? Oh... tell your uncle George I said hi. You are a "republican", huh? Your rosey glasses don't let you see reality.
Sony still makes billions a year. Where they lose it here, they make up for it there. You would assume that a "journalist" that is shouting about the imminent death of a fortune 500 corporation would think of this. Then again, maybe thats why he isn't writing for the Wall Street Journal.
I agree with #2. "managing information" is just too vague. I can manage information with my cellphone (phone book) or manage information with my kids (shave the cat one more time and theres gonna be a beating!). The project needs focus, and serious polish. Your website shouldn't look like those old IBM websites of 1994. Flash and flair shall get you there.
How is it then that other distributions (pclinux being the best at it) provide all the goodies right out of the box year after year without having problems? Afterall, if it was such a contentious issue, they'd be shut down faster than you could say "uck, not turd brown again!".
Being a long time linux user, I'd say most zealots (of the linux variety) tend to miss the most important point. People want the "real deal" applications. Despite the fact that it works to an acceptible degree, gimp (as an example) is NOT a suitable replacement for Photoshop. Right or wrong, people learn an application and unless a replacement is a mirror image of the original, they simply aren't interested. If the gimp folks would stop with all the chest beating and make the interface comparable to Photoshop whereas you wouldn't be able to really notice much of a difference, THEN it becomes a suitable replacement. Until that day, we'll be reading these sorts of stories over and over. I know this comment is a karama burner, but I just had to say what many think.
I don't understand why you would pay thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollars on a machine, but you won't pay a measly $400 for the software? That just doesn't make any sense. If you are going to invest that much, why worry about the cost of software?
From the article:
"... will never introduce a commercial version of Ubuntu."
followed immediately by:
"There will never be a difference between the commercial product and the free product..."
and then:
"We have been contracted to produce customised distributions..."
So what *IS* the deal??
That "business model" is totally useless. Adobe, Macromedia etc. go year in year out making millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars on software sales. Meanwhile, a good project like Blender scrapes and begs for a measly 500 bucks. That isn't a business model, as the main point of business is to make money.

For whatever reason, people will, just as there are people shelling out for skyos with nothing more than a few pictures as an indicator of what it is. Maybe its just the "be different" factor.
Ditched your old employees for more clean cut ones? You don't give a shit about your employees so why should anyone give a shit about your store? I know this was a troll, but geez....
I didn't RTFA (just the news story) and from what is covered there, just grab some steroids, cocaine and some over-prescribed glasses. No need to wait.
I don't buy the "changing to another platform would cost in the short term". Remember, this is a £500m contract! Thats not chump change, and I'd think any company such as IBM or Novell could easily provide a custom solution for half that figure (and be backed by a hardware vendor to boot). There is more to this than simple economics.
Its not fair to compare the Transmeta with the VIA M10000 boards (as an example). I'd hope the Transmeta uses better electronic components than VIA does. Our company has a number of M10000 boards. All of them have roasted capacitors in them (5 or 6 caps per). GSC caps. Cheap junk. This isn't a troll, its a (rather sad) fact.
No... it will have a poor reputation because it tastes like shit!
Just plop the video in video studio, and edit out the beginning section with your name it. So useless, why bother?
Who would want to play around with Final Cut Pro? It's a toy comparable to something like Ulead's Video Studio. Real production folks use Avid.

No, not that. Re-arranging the menus doesn't make it look, act and perform like Photoshop.

I've been trying to explain to my friends in Washington state, our weed REALLY IS good shit! This is proof of it.
Too bad they (like Microsoft) decided to place the Insert key in a goofy place.
