I personally do not block internet ads. I am running several ads, and to se other ads are informative for me. Besides e.g. adsense (googleads) are many times relevant to the site, and in case the site is good and i see an ad it does not hurt to make a few cents to the site owner (i only ckick the ad if it interests me not just to make $$ for the site).
Besides, on obviously spam sites (no content, linkfarm / etc) i refuse to click on ads, and better copy the url out from the ad, and remove referers.
Magazines: Computer magazines are always behind news, and are not interesting for me, I do not want the free windows programs, nor am I interested in the newest printer reviews. If I need something I buy a book or read a manual, for buying I read review sites.
Now sports magazines: I tried Paintball, motocross, mountainbike, ATV, RC related, bicycle related mags and I gave it up. Ads, are ads and those make the money for the mag, but nowadays most of the mags I saw were review over review, and very little articles about events, or action photos. Yes it is important to see 10 different review of the same bike in 2003, 2004, 2005 and then other 5 ones on other 50 pages issue after issue, but it just kills it for me.
I simply refuse to buy anymore, I do not want the ads, nor the reviews, because I am not a shopping junkie who needs a new paintball gun, motorbike, bicycle or helmet every month.
When they separate buyer's guides from magazines and fill their pages with content, I won't mind the ads on every 3rd page. Besides in action/extreme sports magazines the ads are cool looking - while in computer magazines they are mostly annoyingly stupid.

I prefer anythin unix, that gives human readable error messages and does not cover everything in an unusable gui that was primarily designed for end users...

With great responsibility comes... more money? Or something?
i do not see it responsibility... I see it like this : I do my job to have my employer's server up 24 hours.
If something fails - if it is really important they should have a person (even a less competent one) to answer to customer's problems (of which a lot comes from simple misunderstanding to be the most polite (e.g. bounced mail doesn't mean that mail server is down etc..etc..))
besides that, if i am in constant stress of being bothered my performance will suffer during the day (besides tha fact that my life will suck)
also employees must understand that a 24 hours service needs 8x3 people at least (taking weekends) and if they don't I do not work for them...
Actually I just turned down a contract job because they wanted 24hr call service... one person 24hours... no in-house tech... let's say just 1 night a weak interrupted.... but maybe 5.. IT DOES NOT WORTH IT
if they put me in a penthouse with a gym, game consoles, garden for my dogs I would do it for 5 times as much as they offered for maximum 2 years...
maybe i just like to turn my cellphone off for 2 days and not even notice:)
I was talking about one job where I was hired as a network engineer with a diploma and ended up cleaning up 5 year old customer support machines for a week whenever there wasn't network stuff to do..
and when i mean cleaning up, imagine machines at crappy desks, dirty as a public toilet, the kind of machine i would not put into my garage to operate a light and door opener...
also as a network adminat an ISP i was answering customer support calls while configuring services on an other monitor simply because the owners did not want to hire someone who spoke languages and I could multitask anyway....
i mean i am very open to be a team member... but i am very not open to people who would dump any shit on their eployees just because they do their daily work in 4 hours and are willing to leave 2 hours late... and because they think you can always take the little extra...
good news is that all these companies will offer you whatever to stay when you announce that you are sick of that all adn when they realise that it's better to have a good admin/programmer/etc who could do all that than not having one
"security issues can be dealt with later." hahh... i better deal with the unix config and figure out why it is DENY ALL and then implement the ALLOW than deal with a system that is easier to install because everything is ALLOW first to make the install easy....
I mean if you don't know why a service is not staring or accessible look at the logs.... they will tell you what was denied and why the service or the connection fails....
do not allow everything then fix it later because it won't happen... it WILL BE LEFT default if it runs default then your secureity, your dat, your whatever is HUSSS.... out the window....
yes windows software is easier to install but then you have idiots clicking default configs together and have a poo service for your poo money
when you have your servers up in 2 weeks instead of two might cost some dough.... but stability costs less at the end...
when your servers on windows will blue screen at the middle of the production day that wiwill most likely cost a lot more on the long term in productivity loss and people sitting in their offices not being able to access resources...
yes i can install windows box in 30 minutes with webserver, however i have bsd boxes running 365days+ with dns/apache restart and having a good sleep while my non windows machines run is just cheaper me than having a blue screened server for 8 hours and loose customers or receive pages to "fix that crap" in the middle of the night...
of course your mileage might vary.. if you have 24hr support sitting on a reset button windows might be OK, if a reboot costs you heavy dollars and long distance calls and several minutes of services down you should choose 2 weeks install and no reboots..
just a note: how can an installation of a software last 2 weeks vs 2days ? Same software ? I know sometimes clicking a defult config together takes less time than building a config file (text) from a bad template/example but 2 weeks ?
God created all that in 1 week! (including basics for SAP and Linux in a way) -OK He knows more than us I guess
I have to disagree. If they want a contract at all, getting a lawyer's advice is a good thing.
I worked many times "on verbal agreement" which on the other hand can be bad (especially when you end up doing something you were hired for - e.g they figure out that you speak languages, so you "help" with customers and similar).
Besides the lawyer: put it into the agreement what you are supposed to do! As a sysadmin I ended up doing "under the belt" jobs many times that did not fit my qualification and was not in my contract. As a programmer you probably aren't in big danger on that field, but sysadmins can easily end up doing cabling in rather bad places or doing stuff that is maybe OK for the "summer intern" but not a qualified professional.
More simply said: put it in there what you are not willing to do on a regular basis or not at all.
Most important for a sysadmin: restrict your private phone number from customers, you do not want to be on 24hours call (probably).

Small companies cannot afford to care about you many times, and as soon as they grow they care less and less...
So I am better broke sometimes run my small businesses, do some this-and-that here-and-there and be happy that I do not rely on a company of any size...
Now you might think that I am some failure being fired from somewhere, but nop... I worked at many places, smaller bigger and never got fired but always burned out and left by myself
OK I got fired once on the first week from my 2nd workplace, but that guy who I ended up holding to the wall by his neck shouting at him was there for a much longer time:) - and it was a mistake but I do not take idiots too well when I am working....
I heard a big soda company (better do not name them) firing trusted, respected employees just days before bonuses, and in cases just before retirement just to save a few $$ and to put people on the street who will retire in powerty.... that is how comapnies care....

MSN is still the default search engine when you type crap into IE, and grandma, grandpa, or non/. non geeky non internet literate people just do that.
Besides that I noticed how fast MSN is indexing nowadays, if they continue that they could even compete without buying shares.
Also they are preparing for their PPC (pay-per-click) launch.
But they cut the tree/shoot themselves in the foot again with their search SDK.
Why ? Yahoo / Google offers search apis for perl, php, c++ (platform indipendent solutions) ans MSN is again a windows download and no other examples... Why not? Supposedly msn is just XML (as far as I read the specs, so unless they M$-ized the format you can write your own stuff in PHP or whatever else still.
Still why not make a few lame functions or examples in PHP/PERL/C just to mention a few... I mean it is not rocket science to parse XML/SOAP but hey if you give an exapmle code it says: try it it is easy and we come with good will.... ahm it is microsoft i almost forgot:)
yep, that clears it up a bit... I am in kind of a little into the search engine biz and for a second it really confused me about yahoo...
Besides that yahoo relied on google with search results together with AOL, Netscape and a bunch of others....
those good old days, you were in google you were everywhere.... nowadays people pull automatic results from yahoo, display your site's pages HTML stripped, then have you delisted from all the engines...
dog eats dog world... there should be a completely manually rated engine where a spam result or a shit page could be reported with the click of a button integrated into all browsers
I am talking completely out of my butt.. but as I remember most of the exploits affected only Windows versions of mozilla.
Besides: i run mozilla on my UNIX(tm)-like systems and if i am really cautious I am running them with a user that do not have access to my personal files.
Now I wonder how many do not run mozilla as Administrator, and how to run it under the same GUI than the user you are primarily using.
Also how many of these explits exploited system-wide libraries that were OS specific?
And how many other browsers do you have as a choice for linux ?
I swear I would run explorer (on linux with the above mentioned different user) so I can rid of the windows and VMs I am running just to be able to test sites I develop in IE if it 1. existed 2. beleived that nonsense that IE is more secure than mozilla
Ohh can we also mention that mozilla is patched on the spot... while most IE exploits are "low risk" according to MS?
I love mozilla:) I loved netscape and do not remember how you called the OS/2 default browser but as soon as it was not IE I love it..
HEY how many exploits are ther for lynx/links ? how many popups do you have in those ? What was the last time it crashed on you? also how many websites can you access with them without a problem:(
huhh, i misread the post and did not get that synergy was a software too:) I thought it was a KVM but with network connectivity (such as the ones at hostings where you can VNC into your machine even if it is hung at the boot screen)
I will check it out it looks interesting. What i like about vnx is that it works on all platforms (REALLY ALL, I mean PDA or whatever) not even mentioning X2X that just works on all Unices...
model M.. i already said i love it.. though i'll try an ergo as i have very broad shoulders and developed a problem with straight keyboards...
also the klick is great and loved to type on these when i had them..
BUT.. if you are on a linux env, running a win VM's it is good to have a win key and put the ALT-TAB seq on the win so it still works on the VM for the win and other remote sessions (e.g. VNC)
WHERE CAN I GET ONE OF THESE:( if someone made a clicking heavy ones wireless with maybe some ergo design (like the micro$oft one - no less no more bend ) and not braking the 4+4+4 F key structure I would pay $100 a piece and stock up like 3 to have it till the end of my life...
you are so right, but as i mentioned i run a linux as my main console (with the editor, mail, browser, IM clients, xmms etc) usually editor and browser on the active virtual desktop and have a windows machine with some virtual PC solution where i can switch images, systems and limit them as I want...
so to put it in an other way -> i better have a secondary machine with a gig of ram and a fast disc, then just run virtual machines with limited resources to test...
as mostly i do web based stuff (php/mysql/perl) it is usually enough to have a fast windows (no VM) a slow old windows (e.g. w2k/98) in a limited VM and to test server stuff a BSD and a Linux - so i do not mess up my remote machines that need $30/hour attendance (in a hosting) if i play on them and mess up routing or otherwise make them remotely unaccessible..
a real CPU with a real system is better so you are right, if you have 10 pcs hanging around your idea is better.. i just travelled/moved too much around and ended up leaving my old machines here and there...
also i am environmentally concious, so i would limit my running machines to 1 powerful with a nice CRT (YES CRT, it still gives more correct colours at the range of LCDs i can afford) but only if you need to do GFX/video stuff, otherwise LCD.. and one or 2 machines with more limited resources of which only one is low power consumption, such as a laptop...
do not forget it either that a RAID does not protect against deletion, data corruption from a bad save, virus disasters or similar...
you need backup, that can be an offline (not connected to tha backed up computer) computer.. even some old crap mobo with a BIG disk and an ethernet...
I am usually just showing stuff from here to there, occasionally making an online backup in case some psycho authority kicks my door and takes everything . not that i do anything bad or even have warez, but it happens to people and it will happen to people so it is good to have an OFF SITE copy too..
ahm and a microwave owen for the CDs and some other "quick erase" tool (EMP:) or defibrillator) for disks and memory devices... - in case you have something you should not....
Hmm, if there is going to be anarchy we will see a war over lotsa domains - especially the expensive ones.

i mean i am very open to be a team member... but i am very not open to people who would dump any shit on their eployees just because they do their daily work in 4 hours and are willing to leave 2 hours late
good news is that all these companies will offer you whatever to stay when you announce that you are sick of that all adn when they realise that it's better to have a good admin/programmer/etc who could do all that than not having one
"security issues can be dealt with later." ....
.... they will tell you what was denied and why the service or the connection fails ....
hahh... i better deal with the unix config and figure out why it is DENY ALL and then implement the ALLOW than deal with a system that is easier to install because everything is ALLOW first to make the install easy
I mean if you don't know why a service is not staring or accessible look at the logs
do not allow everything then fix it later because it won't happen... it WILL BE LEFT default if it runs default then your secureity, your dat, your whatever is HUSSS.... out the window....
yes windows software is easier to install but then you have idiots clicking default configs together and have a poo service for your poo money
when you have your servers up in 2 weeks instead of two might cost some dough .... but stability costs less at the end ...
...
...
.. if you have 24hr support sitting on a reset button windows might be OK, if a reboot costs you heavy dollars and long distance calls and several minutes of services down you should choose 2 weeks install and no reboots..
when your servers on windows will blue screen at the middle of the production day that wiwill most likely cost a lot more on the long term in productivity loss and people sitting in their offices not being able to access resources
yes i can install windows box in 30 minutes with webserver, however i have bsd boxes running 365days+ with dns/apache restart and having a good sleep while my non windows machines run is just cheaper me than having a blue screened server for 8 hours and loose customers or receive pages to "fix that crap" in the middle of the night
of course your mileage might vary
just a note: how can an installation of a software last 2 weeks vs 2days ? Same software ? I know sometimes clicking a defult config together takes less time than building a config file (text) from a bad template/example but 2 weeks ?
God created all that in 1 week! (including basics for SAP and Linux in a way) -OK He knows more than us I guess
"Hiring a lawyer will scare him."
O.K. some care so you do not die in some nasty thing they caused and then thay have to pay your family a fortune ...
...
... I worked at many places, smaller bigger and never got fired but always burned out and left by myself
:) - and it was a mistake but I do not take idiots too well when I am working....
.... ....
Big companies will replace anyone in a snap
Big companies will put you away in a snap
Big companies just want to make more $$ and are ran by shareholders who do not give a crap about YOU.
Small companies cannot afford to care about you many times, and as soon as they grow they care less and less
So I am better broke sometimes run my small businesses, do some this-and-that here-and-there and be happy that I do not rely on a company of any size...
Now you might think that I am some failure being fired from somewhere, but nop
OK I got fired once on the first week from my 2nd workplace, but that guy who I ended up holding to the wall by his neck shouting at him was there for a much longer time
I heard a big soda company (better do not name them) firing trusted, respected employees just days before bonuses, and in cases just before retirement just to save a few $$ and to put people on the street who will retire in powerty
that is how comapnies care
So in other words I would go for the money then quit before it is too late, or would go for a job that is pleasant and bearable - at the end you spend 8hours a day there (and 1-2 hours commuting)...
I mean your job is half your life. If it sucks your life sucks, and my life should not suck for money, I better be poor and with a smile on my face
MSN is still the default search engine when you type crap into IE, and grandma, grandpa, or non /. non geeky non internet literate people just do that.
...
:)
Besides that I noticed how fast MSN is indexing nowadays, if they continue that they could even compete without buying shares.
Also they are preparing for their PPC (pay-per-click) launch.
But they cut the tree/shoot themselves in the foot again with their search SDK.
Why ?
Yahoo / Google offers search apis for perl, php, c++ (platform indipendent solutions)
ans MSN is again a windows download and no other examples
Why not?
Supposedly msn is just XML (as far as I read the specs, so unless they M$-ized the format you can write your own stuff in PHP or whatever else still.
Still why not make a few lame functions or examples in PHP/PERL/C just to mention a few...
I mean it is not rocket science to parse XML/SOAP but hey if you give an exapmle code it says: try it it is easy and we come with good will.... ahm it is microsoft i almost forgot
yep, that clears it up a bit ... I am in kind of a little into the search engine biz and for a second it really confused me about yahoo...
....
.... nowadays people pull automatic results from yahoo, display your site's pages HTML stripped, then have you delisted from all the engines ...
... there should be a completely manually rated engine where a spam result or a shit page could be reported with the click of a button integrated into all browsers
Besides that yahoo relied on google with search results together with AOL, Netscape and a bunch of others
those good old days, you were in google you were everywhere
dog eats dog world
I am talking completely out of my butt .. but as I remember most of the exploits affected only Windows versions of mozilla.
:) I loved netscape and do not remember how you called the OS/2 default browser but as soon as it was not IE I love it ..
:(
Besides: i run mozilla on my UNIX(tm)-like systems
and if i am really cautious I am running them with a user that do not have access to my personal files.
Now I wonder how many do not run mozilla as Administrator, and how to run it under the same GUI than the user you are primarily using.
Also how many of these explits exploited system-wide libraries that were OS specific?
And how many other browsers do you have as a choice for linux ?
I swear I would run explorer (on linux with the above mentioned different user) so I can rid of the windows and VMs I am running just to be able to test sites I develop in IE if it
1. existed
2. beleived that nonsense that IE is more secure than mozilla
Ohh can we also mention that mozilla is patched on the spot... while most IE exploits are "low risk" according to MS?
I love mozilla
HEY how many exploits are ther for lynx/links ?
how many popups do you have in those ? What was the last time it crashed on you?
also how many websites can you access with them without a problem
huhh, i misread the post and did not get that synergy was a software too :)
...
I thought it was a KVM but with network connectivity (such as the ones at hostings where you can VNC into your machine even if it is hung at the boot screen)
I will check it out it looks interesting. What i like about vnx is that it works on all platforms (REALLY ALL, I mean PDA or whatever) not even mentioning X2X that just works on all Unices
but thanks I will check it for sure,,,
i appreciate the link. thanks. will look at the catalogs as soon as i am not on a DAMN slow GPRS link
...
:) old 386 ones on a comp fair and used them as linux terms...
...
...
..
:)
ahm in the meantime the customizer catalog loaded, and for a $50 it seams very reasonable
i remember we bought 15 computers for $20 a piece with the original ones
anyway i really will take a look at this catalog since ALL RECENT keyboards ARE CRAP
I might even cut one in half and solder/cable them together into a bent ergo setting
that KLICK just makes me type so happy
thanks for the link again
agree, but instead of the kwm, just use X2VNC and VNC server or X2X or VNC2VNC
:x2x
....
mac/unix - pc: x2vnc
unix - unix
win - win : vnc2vnc
hmm dunno about the kwm, but these support copy/paste, that can come handy
note: anyone who i introduced to x2vnc came back thanking me bigtime for clearing the 2nd keyboard or kwm switches
model M .. .. though i'll try an ergo as i have very broad shoulders and developed a problem with straight keyboards ...
..
.. if you are on a linux env, running a win VM's it is good to have a win key and put the ALT-TAB seq on the win so it still works on the VM for the win and other remote sessions (e.g. VNC)
:( ...
i already said i love it
also the klick is great and loved to type on these when i had them
BUT
WHERE CAN I GET ONE OF THESE
if someone made a clicking heavy ones wireless with maybe some ergo design (like the micro$oft one - no less no more bend ) and not braking the 4+4+4 F key structure I would pay $100 a piece and stock up like 3 to have it till the end of my life
you are so right, but as i mentioned i run a linux as my main console (with the editor, mail, browser, IM clients, xmms etc) usually editor and browser on the active virtual desktop and have a windows machine with some virtual PC solution where i can switch images, systems and limit them as I want ...
...
..
.. i just travelled/moved too much around and ended up leaving my old machines here and there ...
..
so to put it in an other way -> i better have a secondary machine with a gig of ram and a fast disc, then just run virtual machines with limited resources to test
as mostly i do web based stuff (php/mysql/perl) it is usually enough to have a fast windows (no VM) a slow old windows (e.g. w2k/98) in a limited VM
and to test server stuff a BSD and a Linux - so i do not mess up my remote machines that need $30/hour attendance (in a hosting) if i play on them and mess up routing or otherwise make them remotely unaccessible
a real CPU with a real system is better so you are right, if you have 10 pcs hanging around your idea is better
also i am environmentally concious, so i would limit my running machines to 1 powerful with a nice CRT (YES CRT, it still gives more correct colours at the range of LCDs i can afford) but only if you need to do GFX/video stuff, otherwise LCD
and one or 2 machines with more limited resources of which only one is low power consumption, such as a laptop...
well said ..
.. even some old crap mobo with a BIG disk and an ethernet ...
:) or defibrillator) ... - in case you have something you should not ....
do not forget it either that a RAID does not protect against deletion, data corruption from a bad save, virus disasters or similar...
you need backup, that can be an offline (not connected to tha backed up computer) computer
I am usually just showing stuff from here to there, occasionally making an online backup in case some psycho authority kicks my door and takes everything .
not that i do anything bad or even have warez, but it happens to people and it will happen to people so it is good to have an OFF SITE copy too..
ahm and a microwave owen for the CDs and some other "quick erase" tool (EMP
for disks and memory devices
