unsearchable graphical mess of information, full with flash-like programs annoying the hell out of me, and disallowing e.g. blind people to do anything online....
it would be completely proprietary, so to access someones network you would have to download 12312411233megabytes of trash windows-only programs, that would tell you after the installation something like this:
"your country code is not supported" or "you must enter credit card number before you can look at our programming or make a search of what we are selling"
napster or itunes are 2 perfect examples of a software being forced on you (just to do something that could be done on a text terninal or web browser) , most hip company websites are a perfect example of complete lack of usability and a mess of flash content (unsearchable, unzoomable, unsaveable, unbearable)
OK I like shortcut based BBS-style terminals, or sites with a design as complicated as dmoz.org...
O.K. 1st step: let's force a broken security model (WEP) on all users. 2nd : limit the allowed encryption so all government agencies can come and look into your house....
it's like telling someone how to run their servers...
wha if I like all my access points running without any crypto and just have a tunnel inbetween my machines, and not ruoute any packets into the net that does not come from that "internal net" or VPN ?
What if i want to see wardrivers trying to mess with my access points?
What if I run Linux or BSD as an access point with my own security measures ?
What if I just hate big brother telling me how to run my home network ?
It's like the safety belt issue : I wear it as once it saved my whole family's life in a nasty crash, however I know people who are scared of it as they were stuck in a car in a rollower accident and they choose to crush their head instead of burning in a car upside down tangled in a seatbelt.....
Well I don't think so, I used to be an FVWM, then afterstep user for a looooooong time before I switched to Wmaker....
then I tried Gnome because I used redhat for a while and for somewhat reason I had a problem with Wmaker...
since then I use Gnome, and while I am not happy with it I got used to it. On Xinerama it has a few problems, and the "remember window state" is pretty much broken in it.
I think the claim that it will take gnome and kde over is ridiculous for the masses, however it might be well possible for me....
I do not need the KDE and GNOME "christmas tree" bloat, but sometimes it makes life easier....
For the masses ? If I gave that or wmaker to my wife she would not be using linux, with gnome she is pretty happy
the funny thing IS NOT that it had a java error, the funny thing IS that it said Mozilla won't work, and then it was unusable with my IE and was testing it in Moz no prob.....
I am a proud mc user:) Seriously, spit on me or whatever, I love mc. Of course when I have to replace and do all kinds of serious mass-modifications I turn to vi, awk, sed
I guess my mc stuff comes from the fact that I was an nc (norton commander) then dn (dos navigator) user, and as soon as I started using linux (in 94) I found mc very handy and loved the editor.
In fact my wife asked me nowadays: are all these programming tools that nasty blue ?:) - as she sees me sitting in front of that classic blue stretched over 2 displays or several instances like 10 hours a day....
so "no baby, that is just a text editor":)
besides: I am installing emacs right now... the last time I saw it was like 8 years ago and this thread made me pretty curious... just these bits could come a bit faster over my dsl 74% [5 emacs21-el 1954800/7151kB 27%] almost there:)
agree, but changing privileges under unix/linux is "su" or "sudo" in a term, then you install/configure whatever you need to go, then close that term....
I used to admin some windows machines a few years back (i was a unix admin, but had to take care of some win boxes) and quite honestly the only method I remember was to :
Log OUT/Log in as admin/ log out / log-in as user.... I mean when you run your windows box at home and have 20 apps open, the last thing you want to do is to do all that just because MSN popped up a message that your client is outdated and you have to upgrade now, or no chat, no IM...
Excuse my windows analfabetism, there might be a "su/sudo" like easy way to become admin without quitting everything but I do not know of it.....
Of course at the workspace users should no install stuff, so that is a different story....
I run my XP box as admin all the time, but I mostly use it to run an X client to connect to my other machine as a 3rd head, or test stuff in IE and access some local gadgets.... I am actually scared to use it online and only access sites I know or ones I really have to and do all IM/MAIL/WEB from my linux box
we used to pop in a CD in the server room into the servers to listen to something other than that warm fuzzy hum, or cold blowing of the airco, or the shouting of the 5 vents on the cisco access servers.....
of course then there wasn't drm, nor we had software, just the play button on most of the cd drives....
not a good idea anymore?
it wasn't a good idea either since those over used cds messed sometimes with the drives (e.g. when linux refuses to eject or do anything other than presenting a LOOOOOONG atapi error running on the console....
but well back then sysgodz (OK, that is a lame word) were allowed to do all kinda crap, besides no puny humans entered the restricted refrigerator area:) other than cleaning staff to take the 256^2 dirty coffe cups from the corner and to clean up the "accidentally damaged" remains of shattered keyboards....
I do not want anyone to come to my site and tell me how to do things. If it does not work in a browser I am loosing sales/customers/reputation, whatever and it is my problem.
If I choose to lock out everyone with a browser I do not like I have the right to do it, as I have the right to throw anyone out of e.g. my diner based on clothing, language, behaviour and sadly enough in some places nationality or race/skin colour.
However I would govern public service sites : such as.gov, educational domains and even banks to stick to a standard that is always accessible to everyone, no matter if using lynx, mozilla, wget or some embedded browser on a phone, without flash animations, and in a way that my 98 year old granma could use it from her windows 3.0 box (huhh did win 3.0 have a TCPIP stack at all?:) )
By accessible, I mean usable. Most of these services are paid from YOUR TAX and so you should be able to access it from a wide range of browsers.
4gb of data : if that is the max it can use I still better go with mysql as I found 4GB to be the problem point with locking and all that on the hardware I could afford.... besided the only prject I would use it is kicking it's 12th GB so I can't even try oracle XE there
symlinks are cool, however mix it with the way windows programs are installed and there WILL BE CHAOS
I can already see XYZ company selling symlink cleanup tools for all the programs that link to all over the windows SYSTEM dirs...
On the other hand programs could ONLY place a symlink into a shared lib dir and keep the DLL in their installation dir... at the end it could be a decent thing too....
I wanted to criticise and just realized that it could be useful to clean some mess up at the end
Yes mode me down I am an ass on that issue, and while 2 years ago I did not even want to hear of a console system, after I got a PS2 I got an xbox in 3 months and enjoying the benefits of it......
While I sometimes install a demo on my PC and see the quality difference in GFX power and marvel the 1024, most of the time the framerate or the needed res/detail adjustments leave me with a game that I can barely enjoy unless I go and buy an other video card or latest processor for several hundreds.
I know that my xbox farcry or doom3 looks like crap compared to the PC version, but I know that my thousand dollar PC ran DOOM 3 like CRAP while my $200 xbox gives me an enjoyable experience....
The other issue is the keyboard gaming : while I found the console controllers stupid some time ago, I got used to them soo much, it made me really hate playing with the keyboard and a mouse when I tried it recently with the FEAR demo (which by the way kept crashing my machine every 20 minutes - no my machine never crashes, even that that particular one runs XP with heavy DVD rendering loads)
While I decided not to get a new console a while ago, the E3 presentation made me think of a PS3 and it just got stronger after tryin 2-3 games recently on the PC, one that something like : "GO BUY a NEW MACHINE I DO NOt RUN ON THAT SHIT".......
I mean 2.8 G P4 with 512M RAM and some year-old NVIDIA...... For the price of a new card I just buy an xbox360, for the processor and motherboard price I buy a PS3 next spring....
Sorry but my apps run just fine on my other machine with the "other system" Linux, AMD XP2000, 768M......
I know that is an other argument and I probably would not have agreed with myself even 2 years back.....
Besides: my projector is 800x600 native which will just kick butt with the outpot of the new consoles... right now xbox 480p is a bit blocky on the 1.79cm wide screen....
I enjoy so called "open ended games" for a few minutes to a few hours, after that I feel that it is a waste of time.
All respect to Rockstar, the game is kickass, I just cannot help it but it leaves me all the time with the game unfinished and me bored to hell of it.
I can't help it. I KNOW that it is not more of a waste of time, that playing far-cry hours long online and stealing the sample and shooting the same buddies in the same time for hours, or running thru a doom 3 map and killing monsters from hell, but somehow it just gets boring to be so open-ended.
Kill all humans took me 1 hour to showe it in the "never see it again pile", while GTA kept entertaining me for many hours.
I have the same problem with racing games. I progress, and progress, and progress.... then I am just bored of it suddenly.
In GTA, the missions give some linearity, but it is too "open" to restart a mission without driving for 10 minutes, but to linear to skip a mission that just annoys you.
You might say that I need directions, but I don't in real life - I am working alone without a boss, and were in management a few times here and there and can plan a day or a project on my own.
So what is the problem? Could not figure it out.
Online play can entertain me for hours: I can play CTF or TS on xlink or xbc for a day straight, but DM makes me bored in 30 mins tops.
I've read that Japanese players cannot take open ended games in general as they need a score or a mission to chase/finish all the time.
Dunno, I guess I will skip the next installment of GTA and choose something with a good multiplayer mode as story modes are just getting the same old crap over and over to mee to.
Hmm, actually just got a bunch of games to try, and realized, that all I am interested in gaming is shooting or racing people online untill I fall asleep in front of my projector...
Am I missing the point of GTA ? Maybe I need an online version of GTA-style open endedness?
I was actually looking at reviews of matrix massive online multiplayer, but so many people complained that I decided not to buy it at the end... So what ?
wow:) "comment a bit" -> this is a full howto, thanks
The solar radiation data is only for the US, but I am already looking for one on costa rica.
The price is a bit scary for the first look, but I assume that we have more usable sun here than you over there. It looks obvious that my 2 24hr-on power hungry machines won't run on solar 24hrs, but I am willing to cut watts here and there to at least build one machine that does.
I would go the inverter way as I already have one (sure I will loose some juice on that) but down here miniatx and 12 supplies or anything other than regular servers or desktops is almost non-existent in stores, on imports you pay 100% tax so it has to be some regular small machine.
Also have to check solar panel prices, I am sure there is a price difference. Actually I might have to take a trip to get stuff from the US if I ever get to the point of really trying something solar.
Your post is a good starting point to start looking, and I really appreciate it!
As some predicted the arab peninsula being covered in solar panels for the time we are completely out of oil, I would make a note on solar power hosting as a sooner or nearer future.
I can imagine a huge installation in the middle of the desert running all the it buried below ground level in the cold, using minimum cooling energy, one level up, the staff and offices, using natural light channeled in thru tricky optics, airconditioned in natural ways and using solar power....
OK, I am an idiot, but It would just make sense, besides I have something with warm places..... I know I could save a fortune just with a few computers running at my house using the 12 hours of straight sunlight in the dry season, and even save some in the rainy season.
I also have to mention that a lot of money goues out of the window for cooling purposes in computing environments so just making the installations a little bit more energy-sane would make a serious saving on cooling energy (e.g. I have seen server rooms in the most stupid locations, where cooling cost 5x + more).
Does anyone have ever made a calculation (or have a link to) on how many square meters of solar panels would power a given server/worstation in different light conditions? OK, do not flame I wrote, a given workstation because old pII-233 with LCD is different from 2 21" crts and a 4-proc renderer with 10 disks.
Besides the fact that it runs on my preferred OS as opposed to MS office, i am pretty satisfied with the speed of all the versions I used. It id bloat for me for sure, but opens whatever I throw at it and usually it runs for 1hours tops a week so I do not care really.
I have to admit that i have to deal with very simple tables which I tend to dump into csv, or a mysql table so I can manipulate it without clicking like an idiot.... also I convert everything into rtf or TEXT and avoid any other format as much as possible..
I do not use the presentation maker and the draw at all so I would actually not mind having a thin version (maybe there is one, but I just apt-get openoffice usually at night and I have it in the morning:) )
I run an old machine for my desktop stuff: amd xp2000 with 768m and 2 old nvidia fx-dunnowhat, so my "benchmarks" are not relevant anyway nowadays:)
yep, i also like to disagree with reasoning people:) - that's why I gave a longer reply explaining my points.
helmet issue: huhh I went to miami early this year and I freaked out on all the idiots riding speedbikes without a helmet. I had 2 nasty crashes on competitions and during practicing with BMX that ended in serious facial injury, one which almost popped my eye out, so I can imagine what impact a 50km/h+ crash could have on a human head -> beanie helmet is for idiots, wannabes, not even girls on a scooter at 30km/hour.
We (my wife on her quad too) ride in helmet, boot and gloves, if I go harder I wear knee+shin protection as well and planning on a chest protector as well.
I got injured so many times doing so many things, that ot just seems stupid not to wear protection out of fashion or lazyness.
In dirt magazines there is a commercial with a leg in plaster and a leg in boots asking you which one is more confortable.
SUV: yep, I agree. No offense to women but some of them cannot push a shopping cart (applies to some men too) without crashing into others or throwing stuff off the shelves - when I see them getting into a huge car it just freaks me out, and I clearly know that they have no clue where the end and the back of the car is, nor they see out of it properly.
meat: I understand your obsession, I used to be a meat eating moster until the age of 20, then started to think about healt (my weight and my sport performance) , environment, animals and tried it for a week. Now I am almost 34 and still no meat in our family fridge (my wife is a biologist -the conservation and recycling kind- and is veggie too).
Besides when I turned veggie, my allergy (real bad one for pollens) was gone in a year and I dropped 10 unwanted kilos besides having a healthier skin and overall feeling.
just to give an idea, to show that i am not talking out of my butt, here is my used-to-be favourite sandwitch:
bread, lard or even better goose lard (i lived in hungary and there people eat lard on bread) parizsi (kind of balloney), pepper salami, ham or bacon, cheese, smoked cheese, hott paprika, tomatoes, other layer of salami and ketchup, mustard, mayo or all... picles on top.... 2 big ones of it with 1-1.5 liter of milk....
and I do not miss it:) the only thing I sometimes miss is seafood (shrimps, caviar and seashells)
meat: yes i think anymal consumption is cruel and is a misuse of the planet
car: If you need the power, you need the power, If you need the big engine:good, use it! I am just against SUV (and truck) usage when it is not needed: in cities, especially when I see every car with 1 person driving on dead flat surfaces with a 4+ liter engine monster. When I went to the mountains sure I appreciated the 3.6 mitsubishi power or the 4 liter gmc since here (in costa rica) dirt roads are really and off-road challenge
bike: I am into the offroad/dual thing and I would appreciate a 250 2 stroke, however they stink and here a decent 450cc 4 stroke is in the $7K+ which I could not afford when I moved here, so for now I am stuck with a 250cc 4-stroke.. I am 6'3", not a half-assed midget, but the bike is good size, even too heavy for hard trails especially adter 2-week-non-stop rains
bike wear: no leather, but full face and decent protection for sure, I raced bmx. rode MTB and protection is a must I know.. As you see I am into dirt bikes more, you should understand that it is the "plastic thing" as opposed to the "leather thing"
except my mx boots - I gave up looking for for a full synthetic material and went for the leather one after cutting deep nice holes into my shin on the first offroad ride after getting the bike.....
I am not a fanatic at all, I just like nature (there is a lot of it here) - and I would be happy to see that people respect it more, that's it...
I turned veggie for health reasons as a second reason, my primary one was to avoid unneeded killing of animals and to avoid contributing the environmental descruction that is associated with animal farming.
While I cannot control my source of diary products (other than choosing the smaller local company and hope that they are better with animals) I refuse to buy factory eggs, and go for the open-farm ones (or whatever it is called when you have the chickens all over the place )..
Well I think these are little things people could do and the planet would be a bit better, that's it.... If you can contribute with your water-saver device or whatever; good for you, I do not agree with the meat and leather-fetish thing, but hey, at least you are self-concious about saving where you can....
ps: when you ride dirt, a 250 is small (most friends ride 125s though) , a 450 is big-enough, a 650 is for the desert and anything over that is for the Paris-Dakar......
nah gotta get some sleep after throwing my dogs out of the bed
McDonalds: industrial killing of animals + crap quality food = bad for the environment and people as well
GM & FORD: yes they could offer such a good will initiative, however they like to sell big trucks, big SUVs and by just looking at their commercials nothing matters for most of their buyers but never used horsepower (or at least that's all I see on TV)
I don't know too much about UPS and Walmart so I do not make critics on them.
disclaimer: I am a treehugger, a vegetarian and I ride a 250cc bike or a small VW and I felt bad and guilty when I had a 4.0liter company SUV....
I don't just mean it I do it whereever I can and I have a bad opinion on US consuming habits and their misuse of OUR planet
grr i was just hoping to have a full text search built in for non MYISAM tables.......
Yes yes do not flame, you can write your own and stuff and cross reference I know... but the feature is neat and would be nice to be able to use it in INNODB:( I am using it on 4-8 GIG tables and it is still usable on a low-end server (1g RAM/3ghz HT proc) and with small tables (500M it is lightening fast on even slower machines) Just that MYISAM and table locking for everything can be such a pain in the buttock...
Make money on viagra, botox, and provide what is really needed in a hurry for an affordable price, if affordable==free give the patent away.
Oh-oh... actually shareholders are better off if half the earth is wiped out by some stuff that we have a cure for.... OK, then hold the patent and do not make the drug affordable.
This is really sad and i am sick of it... I go and find an other planet for myself with free beer, software and medicine...
For wire transmissions my bank is using a printed (& sealed) sheet of numbers for years.
For every transaction (wire you send) you enter the next LOOOONG string from your paper.
Phish this:)
RSA generators are cool, they are using it in the casino biz (and other risky biz) for ages. They are reliable if the software is working well on the other and. That and a password is GOOD security.

So what ?
wow :) "comment a bit" -> this is a full howto, thanks
It id bloat for me for sure, but opens whatever I throw at it and usually it runs for 1hours tops a week so I do not care really.
.... also I convert everything into rtf or TEXT and avoid any other format as much as possible..
:) )
:)
I have to admit that i have to deal with very simple tables which I tend to dump into csv, or a mysql table so I can manipulate it without clicking like an idiot
I do not use the presentation maker and the draw at all so I would actually not mind having a thin version (maybe there is one, but I just apt-get openoffice usually at night and I have it in the morning
I run an old machine for my desktop stuff: amd xp2000 with 768m and 2 old nvidia fx-dunnowhat, so my "benchmarks" are not relevant anyway nowadays
yep, i also like to disagree with reasoning people :) - that's why I gave a longer reply explaining my points.
... picles on top.... ....
:) the only thing I sometimes miss is seafood (shrimps, caviar and seashells)
:)
helmet issue: huhh I went to miami early this year and I freaked out on all the idiots riding speedbikes without a helmet.
Besides when I turned veggie, my allergy (real bad one for pollens) was gone in a year and I dropped 10 unwanted kilos besides having a healthier skin and overall feeling.
just to give an idea, to show that i am not talking out of my butt, here is my used-to-be favourite sandwitch:
bread, lard or even better goose lard (i lived in hungary and there people eat lard on bread)
parizsi (kind of balloney), pepper salami, ham or bacon, cheese, smoked cheese, hott paprika, tomatoes, other layer of salami and ketchup, mustard, mayo or all
2 big ones of it with 1-1.5 liter of milk
and I do not miss it
huhh... gotta work
ps: yes, let's disagree in peace on slashdot
hmm, we have our differences for sure ...
:good, use it!
.....
...
..
.... If you can contribute with your water-saver device or whatever; good for you, I do not agree with the meat and leather-fetish thing, but hey, at least you are self-concious about saving where you can ....
meat:
yes i think anymal consumption is cruel and is a misuse of the planet
car:
If you need the power, you need the power, If you need the big engine
As you see I am into dirt bikes more, you should understand that it is the "plastic thing" as opposed to the "leather thing"
except my mx boots - I gave up looking for for a full synthetic material and went for the leather one after cutting deep nice holes into my shin on the first offroad ride after getting the bike
I am not a fanatic at all, I just like nature (there is a lot of it here) - and I would be happy to see that people respect it more, that's it
I turned veggie for health reasons as a second reason, my primary one was to avoid unneeded killing of animals and to avoid contributing the environmental descruction that is associated with animal farming.
While I cannot control my source of diary products (other than choosing the smaller local company and hope that they are better with animals) I refuse to buy factory eggs, and go for the open-farm ones (or whatever it is called when you have the chickens all over the place )
Well I think these are little things people could do and the planet would be a bit better, that's it
ps: when you ride dirt, a 250 is small (most friends ride 125s though) , a 450 is big-enough, a 650 is for the desert and anything over that is for the Paris-Dakar......
nah gotta get some sleep after throwing my dogs out of the bed
"If Wal-Mart, McDonalds, UPS, GM, and Ford"
....
Mod me flamebait, but here is what I think:
McDonalds: industrial killing of animals + crap quality food = bad for the environment and people as well
GM & FORD: yes they could offer such a good will initiative, however they like to sell big trucks, big SUVs and by just looking at their commercials nothing matters for most of their buyers but never used horsepower (or at least that's all I see on TV)
I don't know too much about UPS and Walmart so I do not make critics on them.
disclaimer:
I am a treehugger, a vegetarian and I ride a 250cc bike or a small VW and I felt bad and guilty when I had a 4.0liter company SUV
I don't just mean it I do it whereever I can and I have a bad opinion on US consuming habits and their misuse of OUR planet
grr i was just hoping to have a full text search built in for non MYISAM tables.......
... but the feature is neat and would be nice to be able to use it in INNODB :( I am using it on 4-8 GIG tables and it is still usable on a low-end server (1g RAM /3ghz HT proc) and with small tables (500M it is lightening fast on even slower machines) ...
Yes yes do not flame, you can write your own and stuff and cross reference I know
Just that MYISAM and table locking for everything can be such a pain in the buttock
Make money on viagra, botox, and provide what is really needed in a hurry for an affordable price, if affordable==free give the patent away.
... actually shareholders are better off if half the earth is wiped out by some stuff that we have a cure for.... OK, then hold the patent and do not make the drug affordable.
... I go and find an other planet for myself with free beer, software and medicine ...
Oh-oh
This is really sad and i am sick of it
wordclock:
...
/. :)
:)
hmm i got confused.
I did not study the digital protocols of audio transmission too much lately so what I might say might be totally BS;
I assumed we use SPDIF on digital connections (i just assume, I use it), and spdif already has control words, that I assume can be used for sync :
but at the end you are right and I see that a word clock is a separate device that is meant to regulate the bitstream
I still do not know why such a code is not internal to SPDIF or AES ant the rest...
interesting, you always learn something new on
and you are right it would be nice to have that in consumer devices
and hey! that could be an other (more like an other 5) cable behind my amp x-connecting ps2,dvd,xbox,pc and the rest and increase the cable chaos
besides: if it is a digital player I would put on a digital out: coaxial or optical....
,,,
....
... back to optical + digi...
anything that is audiophile enough for me has a digital out and connects to my amp (not so audiophile)
or not digital at all, and then hit me with a tube amp
but hey, LPs suck after a few plays, CDs sound artificial if you are audiophile go to the opera house or live events
Hate the crowds ? No music played live of your like? I know
For wire transmissions my bank is using a printed (& sealed) sheet of numbers for years.
:)
For every transaction (wire you send) you enter the next LOOOONG string from your paper.
Phish this
RSA generators are cool, they are using it in the casino biz (and other risky biz) for ages. They are reliable if the software is working well on the other and. That and a password is GOOD security.
