I played Ascendancy for a while, but quit when I couldn't set the difficulty high enough to be a challenge. IIRC, the way to win was with fighters in the initial attack wave; they'd take out all the mobile units but get pretty chewed up doing it. The second wave was ships with good point defense and missiles; keep their missiles beaten down while you pound the hell out of their orbitals. Point defense would then let you sweep the mine belts and get to the planet.
I live in Chicago. I have I-Pass.
There was an expectation that 80% of toll road users would adopt I-Pass within a year. Last I heard, only about 25% have adopted.
Can't say just how good it feels to blow by the people digging for change....
One possible good use for this would be paying tolls. I am constantly annoyed by people who pull up to the toll booth, peer at the booth in befuddlement, realize Oh! I have to put something in before the gate moves!, look again to find out how much they need to put in, discuss it with their passengers, take up a collection, thrown it in the hopper, watch the gate rise, work out which peddle they need to press, and go....
Read their plate. Bill 'em, or have them put it on a credit card.
More info; just RTFA. The ones she reviewed are definitely more portable than the cookie sheet, as they can be folded, but I have a fairly big laptop bag and the cookie sheet will fit into it.
As far as trapping heat inside the laptop if you use one of these- one of the reasons I hate to bare-lap a laptop is because my clothing has a tendency to cover the intake of the cooling fan. These pads appear to be rigid enough that they won't have that problem.
I use one of those cookie sheets with the insulating air space between two sheets of steel/aluminum/whatever. Provides a big dissipation area, the underside is warm but not roasty-toasty, and it cost about $4...
The A-10 would make a stellar firefighting aircraft. There's been a detailed proposal to do just that for about 7 years. They've even done a demo out in CA.

ALCMs launch from a rotary rack in the bomb bay. What they need is a pair of Hound Dog missiles so they can have a '10 engine BUFF.'
