Imagine I am an Internet Provider Owner. If there are not enough IP addresses, I can sell them for a high price. I can tell people:Look at the/. article that says there are no more IP addresses, so if you want a fixed IP address, you need to pay 50EUR/USD per month. Obviously smart people, like ourselves, know that this is bullshit, because any used IP address is one used, regardless if it is fixed or not.
So what happens if they are really all used? They will put people on local networks. People will get a 10.x IP address. and are forced to pay for IP addresses and more then just 50EUR per month.
That means a lot more extra income and all this because they did nothing and did not invest anything.
As an Internet Provider Owner, I could invest in IPv6 hardware and give away my excuse why I charge extra for a fixed IP.
What would you think I am interested in? IPv4 or IPv6.
Oh and the 50EUR per month is not something I just made up. I looked a while back at price differences between end user subscriptions and business ones, I factored in speed, amount of extra services and such, until the only difference left was the fixed IP address. That was around 65EUR, so I rounded it down a bit, even though the end user had higher speed (8Mb vs 3Mb)
Even more important is that you must be absolutely willing AND able to use them, otherwise they WILL be used against you and you would have better of without them. I am not talking about you telling others that you would use them. I am talking about you knowing in your hart that there never will be any doubt that you will use them without hesitation.
And I wish that more people would follow your rule concerning firearms: " If they don't want you to be able to protect yourself, you don't want to go there.". Looking at firearms laws here, it would keep all those loud American tourists away from doing their "Europe in 10 days" trip.;-)
So far practically everything on the web has been supplanted by something else.
Are you a patent lawyer that you think if you put "on the web" that it becomes something new? See if it works without that part: So far practically everything has been supplanted by something else. Yep. Works great. Even the rest works well. The problem is not if something will be replaced, but when. Is it in 1 year, 5 years or 10. And can you make enough money in that time to move on to the next thing.
I have been doing this for years. People come to me with Windows problems and I just say they must go to the person who sold them their software.
Blank stares as they do not understand. They are confused because they did not pay for their version of Windows. Even blanker stares if they DID pay for their version and can't get support for it.
And then they tell me that they found somebody who did it for them who explained that it is normal that PCs go slower over time and that they must buy a new one. When I ask them if their TV is slower, they look at me if _I_ am stoopid.
Obviously they have no interest in free (beer AND speech) alternatives.
If you go out in Public, you consent to being watched
Being watched is not identical to being recorded.
In better times, when a cop saw you, at an event, he would have forgotten you after a few seconds, unless you did something that would make him remember you. The same for everybody else. You would not remember him either.
Now nothing is forgotten and that is an invasion of my privacy. And yes, I do expect some privacy in public. Public space mean to me a space where a lot of people are together. It does not mean that everybody suddenly has to give up all and any of their rights.
How would you feel if you need to show papers to the police every 15 minutes? This is even worse, because they do not even ask you to show your papers. The paper asking is just a way of identifying you and where you are, where you were and where you are going.
1984 was an uplifting story compared to what is going on.
Reminds me of the guy who showed some pictures to a chef. The chef said "Wow, great pictures. You must have a great camera." The guy said nothing and after the meal said: "Wow, great food. You must have a great kitchen."
Early 12.x releases? There was only 12.1. And release versions are just numbers. They have nothing to do with release version numbers that people think. That is also the reason they stopped using the X.0 release.
People thought that that meant something and it didn't. The first release was 4.2 for S.u.S.E. with version 0.42 version of YaST.
I personally liked 12.1 better then 11.4. So obviously YMMV.
But then I run XFCE and not their flagships KDE or GNOME who are both horrible in my not so humble opinion.
There never WAS an official XFCE ISO. There are several way to get XFCE without installing the rest 1) Download the DVD and do the installation. During installation you select Other instead of KDE/GNOME and select XFCE or LXDE there 2) Do a network install and select XFCE or LXDE just like above 2a) http://www.houghi.org/ssh/install.php and then do the same as above. Basically this is a network install without the iso. 3) Wait for http://susestudio.com/ to have 12.2 available and make your own image.
I don't work 60+ hours a week. I work about 40. I have 35 days of payed holidays. I have a 13th month and next year a 14th as well. My boss and his boss don't do many more hours (perhaps 45 or so). I have a good life. I can do most things I want to, within reason. So that is possible.
The retirement program is a different thing. People used die much sooner and that is where the 65 years of age comes from. People had about 5-10 years left before they died. Now that is doubled, so money to be payed out is doubled as well.
No matter how you look at it, somehow that needs to be either payed or the time needs to be reduced.
We are witnesses to a retro dot-com boom, doesn't anyone notice?
It is like patents. Just because it has the word Internet does mean it is something new or something we have not seen before. Even the dot-com boom is a variations on Tulip Mania which happened in 1637. Happened before, it will happen again.
I understand why people are against IPv6.
Imagine I am an Internet Provider Owner. If there are not enough IP addresses, I can sell them for a high price. I can tell people :Look at the /. article that says there are no more IP addresses, so if you want a fixed IP address, you need to pay 50EUR/USD per month.

Make me the boss and I will proof that I am different. (Hey, it works for politicians who get elected left and right, so why not for me?)

I forgot. Sorry. My memory isn't what it used to be.

Since several years it is called SUSE.
It started as S.u.S.E., then became SuSE and then SUSE.
I understand that it is very hard to get right, but Editors: please try to edit and correct errors.
Ow hell, who am I kidding. These editors have no understanding what an editor is or does.
who's your Daddy now?
Isn't it already up to companies to decide what steps the government needs to take for security?
Fixed that for you.
So you get ads to see. Seems that you have not really successfully fought back against "the Man".
Only on Slashdot? You must not look at anything produced by any news outlet. (Not even talking about Fox 'News')
It is legal. It is technical possible. It still is not the right thing to do.
Just because I can sleep with my best friends wife does not mean I should do it.
In an ideal world, we would adapt the laws to the people. In this world we try to adapt the people to the law.
Basically looking for a technical solution for a social problem.
Same here. The only reason there is no year of the Linux desktop is because of pre-install.
People run whatever there is on their hardware. The majority of people does not care. Have it as pre-install and people will use it.
Reminds me of the guy who showed some pictures to a chef. The chef said "Wow, great pictures. You must have a great camera." The guy said nothing and after the meal said:

It was a nice story. If the robot would be owned by a company, it would become true as well. Privately owned? Not so much.
Remember: companies are people too. And that 'too' only until they take that right away from people (or people give it away).
Jeez. Seriously?
I don't work 60+ hours a week. I work about 40. I have 35 days of payed holidays. I have a 13th month and next year a 14th as well.

Sure, there are ways around it, but that is not the point.
If anything, it will make it clear that we don't own anything. That companies own everything we think belongs to us.
I applaud him for making this public.
As with any religion, it never is about what the book says, it is about what some people say the book says.
