128MB RAM Minimum (Though it'll install on 64) and 300MHz CPU.
You must be kidding (and the mods too). These hardware "requirements" have nothing to do with anything like "performance hit". XP is a Win2K optimized kernel (just as Win2003 is a optimized XP kernel) so XP perform better than Win2k. The requirements are just a bunch of fancy parameters based on the then current state of hardware (price and performance).
If you really think that these "requirements" can be used to compare Windows XP and 2000 (let alone 98!) as far as XP's "performance hit" is concerned, then you still have a lot to learn.
Yes, they could easily run Drupal on a website hosted on sourceforge. Either drupal.sf.net or drupal.org or whatever they want. Even if 100 MB would not be enough for them, they can negotiate better terms with SF if they can justify their such extra needs.

SourceForge.net is not a CMS (content management system). It provides the following services for open-source projects:
Free website hosting
Free file download hosting (powerful mirror net)
CVS
and more.
It is *exactly* what they need. And it will not cost them a cent.
I wonder what you think you gain by blocking the ads? It is like saying: 'Ok, Slashdot editors, I want to read your magazine, but I do not want to let you earn any money for running it.'
Instead of blocking the ads you should either subscribe or stop reading it. Any other behaviour is immoral (some would even call it stealing).
Sorry for following my own post. But when I think of it now, I believe that auto-defrag is enabled by default in Windows XP. It probably disabled it using TweakUI and then I forgot I did so. But TweakUI is definitely worth downloading (for power users). It's at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/power toys/xppowertoys.mspx
Synli, could you give us a link or an explanation on where to enable this in stock Windows XP Gold/SP1/SP2?
Sure. The way I do it is as follows:
Download TweakUI from microsoft.com (a tool by MS). Install it and launch it. Select the 'General' page and in the settings look for the 'Optimize harddisk when idle' option. Enable it. Restart. Voila
Basically every component of my computer has crashed windows at one point in time. Faulty 3d drivers, crash the thing going from a D3d game to desktop.
I hope you don't blame MS for that. It's the hardware manafacturers that are to blame. Or did you think that MS developed 3D drivers?
He asked for OS-related specs. He was not addressing developers of Linux apps, but Linux itself.
Now let's face it: Microsoft seems to care more about the interaction between various kinds of hardware and their OS.
Slashdot editors, I hope you are reading. I expected this to happen. I submitted exactly this article two days ago (when it was actually released by NIST) and you rejected it. Now two days later someone else submits it and you accept it. Nice.
That's how it usually ends. However, the philosophy is that people rule each other all together. Believe it or not. Of course, all this is Utopia, as we already know.
If you care to read my posts, you would not miss the point. What I said, in short, was:
GPL and OpenSource have elementary attributes of communist philosophy, which is sharing everything. And note that I do not say that it is wrong. I just say how it is.
> Open Source is collaborative work and is all
> about FREEDOM!! Communism/Socialism knows no freedom!
Nope. The philosophy of communism is sharing everything (within a "community") + abolishment of money.
I for one, hope that someday we'll live in a socialistic world (a la Startrek) where money is no longer the most important factor in life.
What you talk about is communism, not socialism. You know, I lived in a former communist country in Eastern Europe, and believe me, I would never want communism to come back... It was a horrific experience.
I'm afraid you lost that bet. Maybe slashdotters are less short-sighted than you think.
The post had _no_ moderator points for 30 minutes! After I posted my message (whose sole purpose was to wake the moderators up), the message is suddenly at 5.:-)
Precisely. I would bet that, however true your post is, it will not be moderated as insightful nor informative (most people here are GPL zealots). You (and now me too) will be happy when our posts are not moderated as Troll. God bless those who dare to say the truth. Cheers PS - GPL is not perfect and it is capable of preventing research, development, and progress in some fields. Communism does not *always* work.
Following my own post. I am glad I made the moderators give your post some positive points [which was actually my intention]. (Before I posted the message, your post had no positive points -- now it is at 5...;-)
It isn't imposing anything that is, as the grandparent post stated, "capable of preventing research, development, and progress in some fields".
The consequences of using GPL might indeed be such. Read the post to which I replied to understand why.
> AdSense by default, like IE7
Where did you get that information from?
What exactly are your intentions with Linux (considering that Linux is one of your main rivals)?
Certainly nothing prevents you from staying with Windows 98 or any other obsolete OS.
> XP may have an "optimized" kernel
Optimized kernel means better performance. The original poster suggested that XP has some "performance hit" when compared to Windows 2000 or even 98.

And I forgot. NIST had a broken link to that article which I fixed (I just guessed and it was actually correct).
Slashdot editors, I hope you are reading. I expected this to happen. I submitted exactly this article two days ago (when it was actually released by NIST) and you rejected it. Now two days later someone else submits it and you accept it. Nice.
From the article: "The latest rejection means that now the bill on computer inventions must go back to the EU for re-consideration."
