  1. The more things change... on Sun Says Hardware Will Be Free · · Score: 1

This doesn't sound much different from the early days of computing when you rented the hardware and the software was included in the price. (Not really "free", of course.) We moved away from that method because it tended to create monopolies. How a hardware manufacturer will be able to sell a box when M$ is giving them away "free" will be one of the major challenges of such a "free hardware" method.

  2. Re:Rexx on Programming For Terrified Adults? · · Score: 1

I'd recommend REXX. My father, who turned 86 this year, has a lot of fun programming in REXX. Since it's an interpreted language (usually) it's easy to use. And its syntax is quite simple with about 20 commands and a few dozen built-in functions. But I've written fairly complex CGI-based applications using it.

And spammers, and people who put spyware in the programs you buy, and companies which design operating systems so they won't run a competitor's apps, and company lawyers who keep you so busy fighting their lawsuits that you eventually just give in.

  4. Pirates? on 'Pirate Act' Would Shift Copyright Civil Suits To DoJ · · Score: 1
It really bugs me whenever I hear of this stuff being called piracy. I know it's too late to change anyone's mind, but real pirates attacked ships on the high seas, took whatever was valuable, raped the women and probably some of the kids, and murdered everyone on board. Really bad-ass dudes.

All we're talking about is people acquiring a collection of non-material data which they probably wouldn't have bought in the first place. No throats slit, no women molested, not even any plank-walking. Sure, we can't allow someone to bootleg 1M copies of "Lord of the Rings" or there wouldn't be any financing to make movies like that. But what RIAA is doing is nothing but pure greed. And they cover it up by calling other people pirates. Jeez.

  5. Solutions on Kill Bill, IBM vs Microsoft · · Score: 2, Interesting
I don't think that revenge is a strong enough motive for IBM to spend billions promoting Linux. And short-term box sales certainly wouldn't justify such an effort. No, IBM really wants to be in the service business. That's where it made its money back in the sixties and that's where it wants to be again.

So where does LINUX fit in? A strong LINUX means plenty of top-quality apps and to offer customers. And not necessarily IBM apps either. IBM wants to be the integrator, the service company, because it can make a hell of a lot more on billion-dollar contracts with Fortune 500 companies than it can shaving margins on $500 boxes.

Not a typo. The subject was mnemonic phrases, not mnemonic passwords. Phrases may be harder to remember correctly than a single word. But read the article if you want more details of their findings.

  7. Re:Schizo... what? on Schizophrenia Experiences and Suggestions? · · Score: 2
Definitely not funny. All I can say is find a competent psychiatrist with a good knowledge of the latest medication. Fifty years ago, there was nothing you could do for a person with schizophrenia except give them lithium (Yes, lithium is almost worthless for schzophrenia) Today, there is a wide variety of excellent medications. But one will help some people and not others, so you need a good doctor to help with the elimination process.

What can you do? Not a lot. Research doctors, encourage her to take her meds, give her lots and lots of love and be strong when she rejects it. And good luck.
