The reason murderers and rapists get out in 5-10 and we are about to get life sentences for using pirated software is because our country is run by corporations. The rape or murder of an individual is not something a corporation worries about. Even if the victim is someone from within the corporation itself.
What does worry corporations of loss of possible revenue. As corporations exist only to make money and gain power, anything that jeopardizes this will cause them to take action.
Anything that does not affect the bottom line they don't care about.
I agree with you about most people not knowing enough about technology to be able to successfully block or filter content on their own. But that is why there are computer stores. I have worked on computers for many years and if someone came into the store where I worked and asked about ways to protect their kids on the internet I would direct them to software which would do this for them and how to use it. If they needed more help with it then I could for a fee look at their computer myself, install the software and set it up properly. That is what I get payed for, and I know there have to be many thousands of other computer technicians out there that are more than willing to provide that service.
I do not have my kids myself but it seems sometimes that some people don't try at all, in my opinion trying something and failing is better than not trying at all.
One thing these organizations never seem to talk about is how parents should take some responsibility of their own and monitor what their children do. They always seem to want someone else to raise their children for them. What if they actually sat down and talked to their kids about what they can and can't do while on the internet. It is the same as telling them not to take candy from strangers.
If they would actually take an active role in raising their children they will find that there are many options for filtering what can be accessed on the internet. Also, if they don't want their kids to play violent games, then don't buy the games for them.
I have been playing EVE for about a year and a half. I really like it. Sure it has some problems, but EVE is a different type of game then WOW and the other fantasy based MMO's. But some earlier comments are right about it being hard to play alone. The way the combat system is put together it's geared towards fleet warfare.
But also, I think the whole point of an MMO is to play with others, so even if I could play the game alone, it's being able to play with friends that makes it more interesting.
I started watching ZDTV back in 1998 when it started and watched all the time. I even got on Call for Help once and was a really good time. I was saddened when they merged with G4 and in my opinion ruined the shows. But nothing good or bad lasts forever I supose.
