    They would be better served if they offered scala support. I notice a movement toward scala/groovy code frameworks vs. the Ruby/PHP ones lately.

    Then again, Groovy is very popular now, where as Scala is becoming (as per the twitter announcement yesterday).

    It's slow, the apps bring on the pain, and everything is klunky. <flame-war-hat-on>Like PHP normally is<flame-war-hat-on>. Until facebook has the same number of lifestream transactions as twitter, it's no comparison (and it's smart they are looking/integrating at Scala).

    b. In that region, nuclear weapons are still a hot topic political issue.

    c. Obama gives the crowds what they want to hear. He's prven that already. In essence, a good (but typical) politician.

    d. Slashdot took the bait, and now we're discussing what was discussed 10yrs ago. Only difference is we think we have someone that can do something about it... Just like 10yrs ago.

    WTF? It's really called a Mac Book Professional. I see the majority of graphic professionals (i.e. business users) use this model.

    Fractals are great and all, but I think the article is really talking about the concepts behind non-linear dynamics systems, i.e. Chaos Theory. Which obviously the author may not be aware of?

    What we are talking about is the basic concepts in Chaos: self-similarity, superposition, and sensitivity to initial conditions.

    .

    The article/author is using fractals, cause they look, well, visually appealing to the typical person (it gets the point across). Heck, I can make triangles fit QM to so point (i.e. Math is Math). But what we're talking about is applying a different set of principles, not of fractals, but actually Chaos Theory.

    Heck, my 15yrs old Ford has no structural fatigue--due to speding $450 for welding in subframe connectors and front/rear strut tower bars. It has a working A/C, airbags, ABS, and is safe because I drive defensively and safely...

    It's not a tradeoff, it is safe. Aside from getting 10/15 or 20/25 per gallon depending on what chip setting I have it on and having a result of around 525-625HP, I say I take that over the Prius any day...

    As a CA resident too, and sports car hobbyist that deals with CARB and has dealt with D.C. emissions (federal laws), I found CARB is all about protectionism.

    . When the feds wanted different (actually stricter) standards, they used CARB to protect their smog-testing industry. When other states wanted different manufacturing efficiencies, CARB made rules that force manufacturers to go CA (defeating other states' agendas). Now CA is trying to use CARB to keep manufacturing jobs in CA and force Detroit to make cars that fit their standard so they justify taxing their residents (for green initiatives). CARB is all about protectionism, not environmentalism.

    And in most cases, the hidden sin learned from the [car] modifications industry, is if you have the money, you can pay your way out of CARB rules.

    Maybe some alien race discovered nuclear fusion and for some reason tested a bomb 4x the size of the Tsar bomb that likely produced a yield of 100x Earth's version (5000MT). That would be a big "oops". Heck, this could prove not all alien races are intelligent (from a perspective).

    There are really no serious disadvantages to this takeover. It's a win-win for both companies. Though it would have made more sense for a Sybase or Oracle to 'hit Sun up'.

    Yes, Sun servers will disappear--IBM will exploit the Sun power efficiencies and multi-core (Niagara) technology to revive their power line likely. Look out Intel.

    As for networking, Sun is very good at network administration and net tools. This will keep Cisco at bay for networking services and network IT (lots of IBM consultants do network IT). Sun Federal is a pretty big share of the federal IT pie.

    Sun has pretty much open-sourced all their software--but had no business plan to make money from it (it was soley on H/W), IBM is mainly services oriented, so it will get 'dark'-intellectual property for free from Sun tech gurus. BUT we'll definitely see a big layoff after a takeover IBM culture != Sun culture.

    IBM Global Services uses Java a lot and I see a new IBM JVM coming soom (like Oracle's JVM). The Websphere s/w stack will be complete AGAIN. This will be interesting as I'm sure they're (Sun and IBM) are tired of the IceaTea/OpenJDK effort cause they plainly....suck in a enterprise environment.

    Websphere == JBoss (Oracle)

    OpenSolaris == Oracle Linux

    Eclipse >>> Jdeveloper (say good buy to Netbeans!)

    Glassfish will be released to the community & Alphaworks.

    Sun's Java will be released to Alphaworks. JCP will be dissolved!

    MySql will become DB2-lite (like Oracle Express)

    J2ME will become a new product line for mobile -- I would not be surprised if they take J2ME closed source (since Android is kicking butt).

    JavaFx and StarOffice are the only ones that would have an unknown fate. (I would not be surprised if it gets convert to a cloud app like GApps! And JavaFx gets released to Alphaworks).

    Think outside the box,

    Gov't is good at exploitation:

    .

    1. Use youtube to aggregate and host videos initially. Exploit Youtube's excellent distribution model for short term content.

    2. After a month, back them up on your own storage server (i.e. US library of Congress). Exploit your excellent archival infrastructure. Convert from flash to something like Mpeg-4 too. That will built up the LoC's site and pump more cash/need/better use cases into it.

    3. profit! well maybe not as gov't is not suppose to profit remember!

    Actually, Xcode is pretty much from the 68000 days, and very similar to CodeWarrior. Effective in some things.

    And from that note, I disagree to the disagree. It's more efficient to just program in vim/emacs and have the C99 tool at your finger tips. The way objective-C is laid out just becomes cumbersome to do simple things. Compared to Java IDEs, Eclipse, and VS.NET--Xcode doesn't come close.

    The battery life is worse, but the battery life doesn't drain in 7 hours of standby either.

    G1 needs a firmware update on the WiFi module. WiFi is sucking too much power. Backgrounding apps don't help too. Guess what? the iPhone has similar problems.

    Solution for now: get the 1380mah battery.

    And the mini-USB slot looks like is going to be the standard on phones now for everything. Yep. EVERYONE is going to mini-USB charging. Well except the proprietary iPhone...

    The old-Palm-ish i/f is there cause it's efficient, just like www.google.com. It follows google's philosophy. Also, to the OP, don't worry, the Palm Pre pretty much end up with a similar desktop i/f (acocrding to the videos) and power issues.

    Some other things is that OpenMoko tried to do everything inhouse, which takes longer and can be harder with the choices you make.

    OpenMoko did the Frerrunner on a shoestring budget, and had to create their own production workflow within other workflows. That's unlike everyone else with million to used and even fabs (with mass production workflows) to tap. Hence in order to get something out the door, they made a compromise on parts--no 3G, cheap graphics chip, cheap GSM module. If they were going state of the art (they should be), it would require lots of time and money, and I'm sure we'd still be waiting for the Freerunner today.

    OpenMoko to Android is like Gentoo to Ubuntu.

    And yes, I agree on he phone call problems, my freerunner always drops calls, but the WiFi appears to be solid, hence their direction.

    Having worked at OSC during the Orbcomm days, it's interesting, though using a newer vehicle (Pegasus vs. Taurus) that they seem to always have a payload separation issue when something fails.

    Considering we only get maybe 18% usable sunlight at the ground, all these guys need to do is get near 100% efficiency in space, and only lose, let's say, 45% of the power in transmissions. We'll be way ahead of the game still if that is achieved.

    Yes, these ideas have been around for awhile, of course efficiency can be better achieved with direct lines via space elevators, but that's another discussion.
