  1. Better/Cheaper iPods with REAL competition on Inside Hardware Design - Competing Against the iPod · · Score: 5, Interesting

Personally, I would like to see real competition with the iPod. I love mine and wouldn't give it up for the world, but there are plenty of things I would like to see included but Apple really does not have any motivation to do so.

First off, I would like to see an AM/FM tuner included. If they really want to make that something special, they could include a TV/weather band tuner as well.

Also, I would like to be able to replace the battery myself without having to pay a crapload of money for them to do it or risk damaging my iPod if I do it myself.

One of my biggest complaints, and I think just about everyone with an iPod would agree with me on this one, is that if you are into the whole minimalist thing, the iPod looks beautiful right out of the box. However, use it even once and the shiny chromed back is already getting scratched up and if you do not do something to protect the screen, within a year the screen is almost unreadable.

All that being said, real competition would be the motivator for Apple to make the iPod even better and cheaper. And at $300 or so a pop, they had better do something or risk losing their corner on the market.

  3. My huband and the infamous LEGO bath on New Independent Lego Journal Launches · · Score: 5, Funny

I just had to share this with everyone on /. as everyone else I tell this to seems to make them chuckle...

My husband and I were working over the summer at Penn State and we were living in the crappy sublet right on the main street. It had no AC so we used fans the is sucked in some of the worst street grime you can imagine. So, one evening I came home from work to see him sitting on the floor with a whole little set-up - bowls of water, lots of paper towls, a toothbrush - and he had taken apart all of his LEGO things, washed each one piece by piece and put them back together.

He won't do the dishes, but he will wash his LEGO's. This mag is made for him, the Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL)!

  4. No Need for an Extra Program on Plugin For Winamp Allows Downloading From iPod · · Score: 2, Informative

You can download from you iPod by doing the following:

    1. Set your iPod for use as a hard drive.
    2. Make the music directories on the hard drive visible (they are default hidden). You can do this by making visible the folder iPod_Control and clicking on "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files".
    3. Set iTunes to keep your music organized (a.k.a. copy them to your hard drive).
    4. Go to Files>Add Folder to Library and add the music folder on the iPod.

This may take a little time if you have lots of music, but it will only copy the music that you do not already have.

  5. Could this be the next marrow-like transplant? on First Successful Cell Transplant Cures Diabetes · · Score: 1

For years now, bone marrow has been used to help cure people with various forms of cancer. With the prospect of this new insulin producing cell transplant, could something on the order of the NMPD (National Marrow Donor Program) be on the horizon (the NMDP matches unrelated donors with patients based on genetic markers - there is little need for antirejection drugs when matches are good).

    Any thoughts?

  8. Re:Gravity Waves, the answer to everything on BOINC Project to Search for Gravitational Waves · · Score: 1

There are gravitational waves becuase gravity is NOT instantanous! The wave is a change in the gravitational field that travels at the speed of light (we think). And to make a measureable gravitational wave would mean that we would need to move a very loarge mass very quickly. That is why LIGO is looking to space for these events (like super novas).
