The Bender PC Case
malorkus writes "This Norwegian site details the process of building an awesome Bender (from Futurama) case mod, complete with an Optical drive in his mouth that you slot CDs into! (Be sure to click the link at the bottom of the page to see the next page in the sequence)." This is one of the most impressive DIY cases I've ever seen. Props to the artists behind this one, even if I can't read any of your words!
In the interest of promoting more enlightened discussion, a translated version of the webpage can be found here.

You know, a part of me says these guys need to get a life.
And another part of me says this is a really cool waste of time.
Why doesn't Slashdot ever get slashdotted?

Hmm, I wonder if anyone sells custom made computer cases like this? It would be really cool.
....if when you inserted the media into the mouth, the eyes indicated a play, paused, ff, or rr sysmbol.
Add a humidor and a couple of cigars and it would take it over the top.
Even better is that when DRM material is inserted, "Bender" would output "Get bent"
Nice work

I don't think it's the actual site that's down, it seems to be whoever is serving up the ads that's struggling.
It was down after only 1 comment :-/
Wow, 6 post and no nothing to be found, when will the /. Editors learn to set up mirrors before posting.
I wanted to see Bender's shiney metal ass (I'm told it's made of candy!).
When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout.
Except mirrordot doesn't have the page either. Really suuuuucks.
Schrodinger's cat is either dead or really pissed off...
hehehh
If you turn off Javascript, the Coral cached link works fine. It's their ad server that melted, and with 4 or 5 javascript includes per page, that's a long wait for timeouts.

Good job promoting slashdotting the server twice. No wonder the site went down so fast.
This is by far the coolest case mod I've seen. I wish I had the skills (and time) to do something like that.
Do you think the guys from the Futurama team saw this one? Anyone knows of a way to contact them (I don't think writing to Fox would be any good).
Shinier than yours, meat bag!
It should be made of recycled beer cans.. :P

if you're running firefox with adblock - add a block for ad1.hardware.no/*
That's what's been slasdotted - not the site.

The design the thought the effort, it is a piece of art that becomes a computer. Amazing, he could've just made a Bender model out of metal. But where is the fun in that :)
You gotta add a twist. The computer case is pretty damn cool.
5 stars and 2 thumbs up.
Putting ad1.hardware.no in your favorite ad-blocker's list will do the trick.
Any true Futurama fan knows that Bender has a 6502 CPU. Just point the f-ray at his head to prove it.

So uh, will my case rust if I DON'T pour beer in it?
Am I the only one that finds that one up-skirt pic to be a little disturbing? I really don't need to see his "fan".
I have been wanting to make a MythTV machine for a long time now and this is GOING to be the case for it. Has anyone else here done something cool with thier MythTV machine? Bender: "I think I saw a 2!" Fry: "Don't worry - there's no such thing as 2."
....at that huge Norwegien game gathering. You know, the one where they had the coolest 5 day network ever?
I think it won their case-modding contest as well. Well - more power to them.
The other cool thing at the game gathering was the 1 GBps uplink to the net that they had! My god, I had never heard about such a big pipe before!

* 1 stk Slim slotload DVD ROM/CD-brenner fra Carputer.no
* 1 stk VIA EPIA-M 10000 Mini-ITX hovedkort
* WLAN-kort med antenne
* 2 stk 10 watt lyspï½rer (12volt)
* 1 stk 120 GB harddisk + 4 stk eksterne 250 GB disker koblet til firewire
* Panserslange (til fï½tter og hender)
* 3 kjï½kkenboller i metall fra Coop (til toppen av hode, og til beina)
* 4-5 papplater
* 3 stk 0,7 mm stï½lplater
* 1 Stk Digital lydopptaker fra Produkt 24

You are correct. I remember seeing that in the Slurm episode.
That also means I can program bender. I first learned assembly and machine language on an old commodore vic-20 with a 6502 chip.

I know it's not Flexo cuz he doesn't have the stylish goatee.

As far as I understand from the text and the 'translation', the antenna on his head serves as a WLAN antenna. Which is of course a less embarassing solution than having to plug a network cable into his shiny metal ass.
Any case mod that requires chicks wearing hard hats and lots of welding is pretty fucking sweet by me.
Although, I find it a bit distrubing that they get Futurama in Norway.

What I want to know is 1) where's the cigar?, and 2) if you stick a magnet on him does he sing "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain"?
Technically, 3) it looks like the fan is on the underside and I don't recall seeing a vent on the back -- was there one?
A very cool case. Very cool. I want one.

I would be scared a bit about putting my computer into such case. You know that without ass-bumpers it could explode?
The latest issue of PC Gamer (UK) has the results to a competition to design a PC case. Which design won? A Bender case of course!
The CD-in-the-mouth thing is a crock though, isn't it. There's no actual drive in there, just a bit of paper! I think a proper translation of the article will include "we tried to rig the CD drive up to his mouth, but it was too hard so we drew some lines on some card instead".
Wow, the OP musta hit a nerve. Take a deep breath, Seth, and try to relax. I think he was joking.
You know, the general consensus on this terminology is that the phrase "get a life" is synonymous with "there must be better things you could do with your time".
so the OP is not suggesting that these people go get a second job. He's just pointing out that on the list of things to do, making a "Bender" computer with a CD drive in its mouth is kinda low (though it does rank higher than replying to posts on Slashdot). Of course, all that's a judgement call, not a commandment from the heavens.
It breaks my pluginses, my precious!
Usually what happens is MirrorDot sees the page on Slashdot when *WE* see the page. By the time it runs off to index and leech it, the site is already down.
Can't MirrorDot or some other service be pre-warned or something, before the
site is even "subscribers can see it early!!!"-worthy?

The C-64 had a 6510 CPU in comparison...
Meh, only a couple of memory-mapped IO lines different. And the 1541 disk drive for the C-64 had a 6502 in it.
I think he was joking.
Yeah, I get that he was joking. I don't think he was seriously trying to ridicule those Norwegians for wasting precious time and resources on a foolish pursuit. His use of that phrase simply inspired me to question its significance. People tell me to get a life all the time. From my perspective, I'm enjoying the one I have quite nicely.

We like to look at the pictures.
Damn, you could go nuts with this thing.
- Turn the eyes into drive indicator lights
- Put a speaker in the head so it can make witty Benderisms on power-up, etc.
- Make the arms semi-rigid with steel cable shielding in them for action posing!
- Stick a popcorn maker in the head
Unfortunatly as long as the motherboard and ps have to sit in the body you can't add a beer cooler in there. Condensation and electronics don't mix.
Now the guy should make a Leela PC with ultra-realtisic silicon body parts.

I hope you didn't read my post and interpret it to mean I was knocking having all those things. In no way did I intend for my comment to come across that way, but I can see how it might. I was mostly just responding to the conformist view of what adults are expected to be doing with their time. I really wasn't trying to criticize choices people have made within their own lives.

I wonder what he will do to top this next year, maybe a bsd daemon? Would be cool, since it has so many difficult details. Maybe a whipping tail for disk activity or something. :-)
