99% of Interns basically start out as 'net negative workers'. Some remain that way and are kicked. That has not fundamentally changed, at all, in 30 years. Hiring recent college grads/kids has always been a low odds crapshoot. The odds have gotten worse as more air thieves are getting college degrees, but fundamentally, it's the same old shit.
For 70 years +- the USA paid lip service to 'one China', while making sure that Taiwan was capable of defending itself. Developing into a MAD situation, just on Taiwan's military vs the mainland's.
Nothing has changed except some diplomatic posturing, large investments by Taiwanese companies in mainland industry and one of history's biggest financial bubbles.
We'll see how China feels about their artificial islands after their bubble pops and the next F5 cyclone rolls through.

For quality, speed influenced scifi, you want PKD not LRH. Sure PKD has a lot of stories with no ending, but LRH's shit seems endless.
Unless they ran the fuel balls out, for a short time, the plutonium waste is mixture of isotopes and not suitable for weapons unless run through isotope separation. Which could have been done on the Uranium safer and cheaper.
