I must agree that I find the constant drone of a few case fans is quite comforting, however, there are limits. For example: my friend has a Vantec Tornado which screams when it is turned on; it can even be heard through a floor. There is no reason that a trade-off between performance and noise-level should lead to a computer that you don't want to turn on, due to noise.
One of these days, I'm going to drop a paper clip in it, I swear...
I was thinking the same thing right after reading the line about ten miles of range. Sometimes I wonder how healthy it is to live in a neighborhood with multiple wifi hotspots, but I can't imagine 10-20 devices on the same street with the power to transmit 10 miles. Perhaps this type of signal is harmless, and I'm worrying about nothing. However, they may also find that they cause cancer (what doesn't?) over a 10 mile radius.
I've been using Adblock for about 3 months now, and I have to say: it is amazing. The only time I have to see ads now is when I'm at someone else's house, at which point I can ask "Why aren't you using Adblock?!?". Unfortunatly, as Adblock becomes more popular, advertisers will surely find ways around it. In most cases, however, a simple right click will allow you to make a new filter and block out the rogue ad.
I had an SVCD that stopped playing after about 10 minutes on my Apex DVD player ($50cdn). The audio was still fine, but the video reminded me of a VCR with the tracking off. To this day, it will not play that SVCD, but every other disc works fine. Also, that disc works fine on every other DVD device in the house. Bizarre.
Am I the only one who doesn't care what their desktop looks like? Shadows are all well and good, but this only take up valuable cpu time which could be used for NetHack!

Here's hoping this is safer than it sounds.

Also, as a shameless plug, I have a list of the extensions I use here.

My ISP thanks you for that.
The RIAA is now building a rocket which can be sent into space to deliver a cease and desist order to supernova to stop piracy once and for all.
