Personally I think you're being paranoid. Maybe you could get a stun gun or something? Or wear a shirt that says "Guns don't kill people, I kill people" That should scare the muggers away.
I'm curious to know what something like this would be most useful for. I mean obviously there are some good uses, but why not just use DVD+-R or something?

Yes, but if you are just using old work then what's the point of taking the class? You're not learning anything new.
