Actually, if you didn't know, there is a prototype. Yes, there is one. How do I know? I'm on of those "50 opensource ..." people. And, there were pictures in Next Gen April 2001. The whole system looks pretty slick (much nicer than the Xbox), and if it got out...Plus, it is now running at 750Mhz with an AMD processor. Standard Geforce 3 graphics (yeah, the Xbox will be NV27.5, but who knows when that will be out? That could possible kill M$ by causing them to delay launch, or settle for NV20 graphics..either way they are screwed).

Also, the 0.4 version of the IESDK is about to be released. No, there is nothing new in it. But, it is completely updated (and it now included the kernel, so you can actually use the nVidia stuff in there). If the funding does go through, there will be an updated road map for all the sdk releases (with stuff like openstream and Xtrema, which are Indrema creations in it). Plus, us volunteer people have taken over some of the gameXchange / IDN / mailing list management, and there will be new content up on IDN soon. Yes, the place will come to life.

Now, what happens if they go under? Well, John (as you can see in last weeks chat log) is going to try and save the IDN and gameXchange sites as more general linux gaming resources. Also, they will be releasing all of their code (including the popcorn stuff -- their tv viewer and jukebox stuff), which they plan to do anyway (Xtrema is based on Xfree86 4, and openstream will be LGPL IIRC). So, don't count them out yet. Even if indrema inc. goes under, indrema the community won't.

What you say! How is this possible! Why, there is a little (not so) secret things called gnuSTEP. What does it do? Well, it provides a set of Frameworks that are 100% compatible with the OPENSTEP specification. And guess what? Mac OS X Cocao is OPENSTEP! Yay. And, gnuSTEP is really close to 1.0 (the last release was what the developers said was the last release before 1.0). So, we may see lots of cool apps on linux in the future, once people start writing Cocao apps for Mac OS X. See all the fun and magic over at gnustep.org. Today.

You've got me worried already... * Display backend : controls the hardware

    That's the X server

Not entirely. I mean extremely low level. Like an Xfree 4 module. The server would be a more abstract element in the system, consiting of the I/O for devices, whatever Extensions you would be running (think X-RENDER / Display PostScript / OpenGL), and the server communication glue.

    * GUI library : Basically xlib

Huh? Xlib doesn't povide any GUI stuff at all, unless you consider things like rectangles, points, and arcs to be GUI objects. There are no widgets in Xlib; it is not a GUI library. GTK+ and Qt are GUI libraries.

I do consider rectangles and stuff GUI code. They are drawings that make up the graphics, that make up the user interface. So, it is GUI code. You would build your toolkits on top of this, just like you do with Xlib. Now, it is possible to write a program sans toolkit, and you could do the same with this, but it would be just as painful.

    * User Interface Management : controls for the various devices like mice and keyboards

    xset and xmodmap

Not exactly. I'm talking about raw I/O with the devices. There would be a standard interface to use the devices, but then you would have the modules to communicate with the devices. The tools like xset and xmodmap would be built on top of the standard interfaces.

    * GUI backend + library communiction : the glue that would tie everything together and allow them to talk, whether it be by network or any other method

Try X protocol. The thing is, X protocol *must* be on a lower level than widgets or other UI components. If it was up to the higher level stuff, then things like KDE and GNOME simply could not co-exist unless they worked out a new standard for network display. But they've already got a standard in X protocol.

I'm just not being clear am I? There would be a standard communication protocol between the low level GUI libraries and the display backend. Now, you could choose how to implement this. Be it over a network, or some way to do it locally with no networking involved at all.

    Snipped the rest out

I love X. Great and amazing Architecture. Still, it isn't all the way there. It needs more flexibilty. It's hard for me to describe, but I'll try.

First, throw away the over the network approach to GUI. Instead, modularize the entire architecture. Then, you could swap in a network module for the xlib + xserver interaction, or you could do without the network, and do it all locally somehow.

Expanding on the idea of modules, allow swapping them in out while the system is running. I say system, because the server wouldn't be the central part. You'd need a few core components:
    • Display backend : controls the hardware
    • GUI library : Basically xlib
    • User Interface Management : controls for the various devices like mice and keyboards
    • GUI backend + library communiction : the glue that would tie everything together and allow them to talk, whether it be by network or any other method

Now, X does meet a lot of the goals, but I want more. Can I run X without any network sockets ever being used? Can I make X run without displaying anything easily? Can I get X to run in text mode (ala aalib) easily? I don't know the answers really. But what I suggest is to screw X and Berlin at some point, and start over with a more dynamic and rich enviroment. These modules in the Windowing System would be like X-extensions, but on lots and lots of crack. Hopefully people can see what I mean.

A small question now: does X allow you to make a multi-docment interface (1 big app window, with several document windows that are constrained to within the window). I've been wondering about that for a while. I've seen nothing to say it can, but I still wonder. Can someone who know the answer just send me a message (just grab my mail addressfrom the mail link). Thanks. (Yes, that is probably a dumbass question or so you think. No one knows everything).

You might not see a point, but some people will. Basically, indrema will be launching the IES in two stages: a limited launch for the early adopter people so they can get funding for launch 2, the larger lauch. Remember that the DC did extremely well in the North American Market, it just failed in the Japanese market (and since Sega is from there, they probably care more about that market). There is always the chance that indrema can beat the other -- everyone has to start somewhere. Maybe it isn't for you, but it will be a good console for others.

Besides, if indrema does fail, they made the promise to give everything to the community -- the tools to certify games and all the source to their proprietary stuff (Stuff like the Digital Right Management Software that generated certification keys and checks them at runtime). So, if nothing else comes of it, you will have a fairly decent box with a nice graphics system (the GPU is in a card, so it is replaceable). So, there might be a reason to get one even if you don't want games (remember, they lose money on every console and make it back up in game sales).

Plus, they are very hacker friendly. I mean, the company was founded by a hacker. They have said they won't mind you taking apart the systems as long as you don't circumvent DRM (there will be a DRM-less dev console retailing at or slightly below production cost, more on that later). It has 4 usb ports on the front, HDTV + s-video + tv out, a graphics card socket, a modem, an ethernet card, and more usb on the back so...the possibilities are endless.

The developers console will also cost much less than all the other devkits. I mean, 600-900 bucks for a developers console (with cool extras like Code Warrior For linux and some 3d tools) is amazing! I mean, Sony charges what for their developers kit? Way too much for most small game development houses. Now, imagine this -- it is 1992, and id is just starting. Do they have the money for an expensive dev kit? Nope. So, they just make a dos game. Ok, so not a good example. But, it does make a point. Small game houses do make good games, but can't afford expensive developer kits. This gives them a chance to make their games for a console with a reasonable cost to them. So now they can be the next id.

So, I hope I've convinced some people about indrema. Or at least sparked some thought.
