The only problem I really see with redoing everything in LaTex is its lack of linking and embedding. That is why it cannot be done. We need those. It is the Web for a reason..because of Hyperlinks(the "Hyper" part in Hypertext). Without liking, the web would be a lonely place. No slashdot(since it needs links), no linked websites. Just plain old boring, 1 page deals, or ones that have links you have to type in. That is bad. And, without embeding, you lose flash. Flash is your friend. Besides, xhtml is looking pretty nice...Just plain old HTML reimplemented in XML instead of SGML. And, it can be extended.
What is your advantage?! I tell you: it works out of the box. And, it keeps working. Wow! No install time! Already working!? How can that be? Plus, it costs 300 bucks(or will cost). And, how much will it cost to make? My lowly pentium 166 is so slow...why buy a new box when I can get this kickass high-end console instead? Sure, it has less expandability, but do the majority of people care? No! Do I care? Yes. But, I still want one. If only because it will do many things: 1. Bring new games to linux 2. Create new linux users 3. Expand linux hardware support
All of those are
good things! Indrema games should run on any linux box. yay! Some indrema users will realize it is running linux, and linux is good, so they will buy redhat(but if they ask me..i'll install debian for them;). Yay! Good for regular linux. And, if it expands harware support(which is must certanly do since it will be using usb stuff), that is great! Imagine, mad catz will release all of its game pads, and if they are nice, we get source code! And kernel drivers. Oh! Maybe this will increase support for binary, versionless kernel modules too? I see that as a plus(no more compiling source code to get a driver running). Although I have my own ideas on versioning(such as the module having a version id..and the kernel knowing which version of kerenl modules it can't run...) But, the indrema will be generally good for linux. It is all I ever wanted -- a common platform, plus upgradibility. So, not everyone will have the same graphics card, but that doesn't matter, it will be using openGL. My HD might be bigger than yours, but so what? Nothing should be so low level that a game can't run on all indrema's. On the old systems, like the NES or N64 that are relatively low end, the little bit you gain from tweakign the game is amazing. But on such a high end system, does a 1% speed loss matter?
I know what linux is. A few of my friends know what linux is(and 2 of them use it, one wants to, but it a little afraid of losing windows). But, in my Comptuer Science 3 class(High School), my friend who uses linux, the one who wants to, and me, were the only ones who knew what linux was.
Let me tell you of the severity:
The teacher said this:
Linux? Linux isn't and OS. It is a
graphical shell on top of dos just like windows.
It scared me badly. Very badly. The other students laughed. I got angry. We had to put up computer stuff on the walls, so one person made a picture of a guy wearing a linux hat and a tshirt that said:
I know absoulutely nothing
It is making fun of me. Everyone makes fun of linux. They all say it sucks. Not a single person in that room(except for me and my friends) have very even seen linux running before, much less used it. This brings me to the main point of my argument: Unless free software and open source companies/groups have programs to teach kids like me to use free/opensource software, most kids will just use windows, and never even know what linux or free software is
So, please help kids to stay away from the evils of Microsoft. VALinux/penguin computing: give computers to schools! It is tax deductable, and will help students learn about your computers(and linux). If they realize how great linux is, and how high quality VALinux/penguin computing computers are, they will buy them later in life. I don't want to have a future full of republicans and Micro-serfs for peers. Everyone knows the UNIX is on its way back in, so why not teach people how to use it. It is up to you as responsable software engineers, programs, web designers, and just plain free software / open-source fanatics to make sure my generation does not become beholden to commercial software interests. Stand up! Fight for your right! To use free software. All the RMS's and ESR's of the world, try to talk to local high schools when you are on trips to areas! Large companies that sell linux stuff, donate computers and other equipment to school(making sure it goes to the computer science classes...at my school, the typing class has pentium 3's, and the computer science class has 11 year old 25Mhz 486's)! The war is about to be fought. Don't let us lose it.
Why are all of bushes ansewers 3 pages long!? Hagelin has nice, short, concise answers. I hate people who write long essays to answer simple questions. BUSH: you don't need to write a book when you are asked what you will do about drugs! A simple, "I will fight them, and kill people less than 20 year old" is good enough. I justh ad to to research on hagelin(for school), and, well, his website made me, as an "HTML programmer" cry with tear of joy. Then, I went to bushes. It is unimpressive. Hagelin has good ideas, and probably would make a good leader; Bush is just a 50 year old crackhead hippocrit("I will fight the war on drugs!"...but he used drugs in college...and if his laws had benn in place then...) So, the point to this evil rant is: evil-republican-16-year-old: "Guys cause Girl problems, and girls cause guy problems" me: "And republicans cause all of our problems!" That was actually said in my computer science class. The one good joke I ever made. And I was happy. -------------
Well, since roblimo lives 10 minutes down the road...Of course he sometimes comes to the lug meeting. Of course, the first lug meetign I went to, he was talking. Somehow, his ranting until 10:30 pm inspired me. It made me come back to all of the subsequent lug meetings. You gotta love living in good ol' Maryland. And I thought my lonely little are of columbia / Elkridge didn't have anyone important. my rant is now over. -------------
Ok, I lack understanding of this. Take a $250 billion company, and break it into two pieces. Now, the economy takes a $300 billion hit? How? The two companies still sell their wares. And, any gaps will can be made up by competitors. OS company doesn't do to well? Well, that will be good for RedHat, Mandrake, BSDi, Caldera, etc. No one buy the applications? Fine, Corel looks decent, and if staroffice gets ported to Gtk+, yay. So, can anyone explain to me how breakign up Microsoft will make the economy die? -------------
I use Linux on the desktop too. If M$ released Office for Linux, and it wasn't as buggy as the windows/mac versions, I would use it. I've been trying an experiment lately: Only doing work on my linux box with free software. Well, so far it has worked(for the past month). GNOME workshop(especially abiword) suit my needs, and koffice is somewhat functional. I remeber reading somewhere that linux has a 1-2% desktop share(and a 29% server share) of the market, and that certaintly isn't absoultely-none. That would be millons of people, and millions of people are a lot. The one reason that peopel think that no one uses linux is that it has very few(even though it has many) commercial programs. This makes people not buy linux, and in turn makes people not develop for linux. Well, it's nice to that corel, Loki, id, Applix, and others risked it all to support linux. Even though corel has somewhat failed(it was nice knowing you...maybe if you go under, that will help M$ get broken up faster?), at least they tried. If linxu game sales are horrible, then go out and buy them. When windows/dos first came out, do you think that program sales were huge? NO! In the past three years, linux has gained substantial usability enhancements. As long as they continue, then people will be less afraid of linux. Then, more programs will be ported, and the FUD will stop(My aunt says this: "if linux didn't have all those security holes, then people would use it. Microsoft NT has no security holes, so people use it"). And, my comptuer science teacher says this as well(in response to my question of whether we were going to be learning any M$ api stuff): "It doesn't matter. Linux and windows are basically the same thing. They are both shells on top of dos" and "Linux started out on the mainframe, and was only ported to the PC last october". Maybe if the FUD will stop, people will use it. I do my part--I let people borrow my linux discs all the time, and copy them when people want me too. Everyone, go and do that. Ask peopel to just try it. Give them winlinux, so they can install it without partitioning. They will see that linux is good, and hopefully erase the redmond demon from their lives. My rant is now over.

No more binary packages! Everything distributed as source code. The nice thing is that it can be interactive. yes, interactive. If you load up the packager with the normal options, it will load up a simple console GUI(they are supposedly going ot make a Gtk+ based front-end too), and you can configure the program. It stores everything as XML. The congfiguration is handled in a config.xml file, the interface in interface.xml, the dependencies in dependencies.xml. The interfaces will be build using XML, TCL, PHP, and javascript(well, XML and any of those languages added). Imagine -- The kernel pacakge will have xconfig load when you open it! mpkg will also feature a daemon that montitors when new programs are installed in the the standard directories(everything but/home). It then checks the binaries against a build in database of known software, and can ad the program to the database. So, you can have rpm, deb, and plain ol soure code distributions that CO-EXIST! i suggest that you join the mailing list, and read the site. it has lots of information. Sccording to one somebpody said on the mailing list, sometime this week a detailed mpkg spec is going ot be released. -------------
I've just read through all three pages of comments, and my eyes burn. Lotso f htem are good ideas, but I'm going to guess 90% CANNOT BE DONE IN A HIGH SCHOOL COMPUTER CLASS! Why not? Well, at least at my school, the typing class gets 400Mhz pIIs, with lots of extras, and the programming classes have 486DX2s. Oh yeah, and they have win2k, and we get win3.1. And, the pascal class was so boring, someone cracked hte bindery and made everyone intruders(they beat me too it). But that doesn't matter. The reason it was so boring was because all we did was stupid stuff. Let's sort waffles. Sounds fun? Nope. Well, here are my suggestions(Maybe I can use my soon-to-be-founded LUG to force MY school system to do this stuff too).
1. Don't use windows. Or borland products. That will screw your students over for the rest of their lives. Give them a copy of linux and the GNU Compiler Collection. They should run fine. If you can't do that, then running windows is fine. Just try and use DJGPP with rhIDE, or Cygwin. What I wouldn't give to be taught how to make 32-bit linux programs. Since UNIX is the past and the future, why not teach them that?
2. Go above and beyond the AP curriculem. Or, allow the ones who don't need to go over the same thing for 3 weeks to move on. Networking is a good thing to teach. Networking is fun. Make them adapt current programs to, say, grab the data from a file on a remote server, and be able to save to the server. That can't be too hard, can it? Possibly teach CGI too. I would personally find that fun(hmm...index.app instead of HTML= frames on my site can stay, but users can go directly to an area of intrest)
3. Make them read source code. Just make them read some. And then try to improve it. Give them the lynx source code, and tell them to make it better. Add features. Customize it. Make it disply tables correctly. Do it with any program. If they are 2nd year CS students, give them linux to mess around with. Give them a project to write a kernel module. Start with a simple one, and then move up. Or, give them a peice of hardware that linux can't use, and see if they can make it work[although that is probably WAY above their heads]
4. Let them write a game. Quake is too adavanced. Get the doom source code, or the legacy doom source(because we all know legacy doom is better than doom). Tell them to either: (a) Clone it (b) Add stuff to it Just a thought. They'd be able to learn a lot about graphics programming along the way too...which brings me to number 5:
5. Teach them / let them learn how to use Gtk+ or Xlib. X-programming fun(after the fear goes away...), but I wish somehow I could get taught to use Gtk+. It is very scary, and I don't have money to buy a book on it. I'm sure the school could pay 50 bucks for one copy to teach from. Gtk+ runs on window nowadays too, so if you have to use windows, it works too.

Why do the do this? huh? why? Makes no sense. Only about 3 shootings a year in america. hundred are killed a day in cars. Let's profile cars! And will i kill anyone?~~ No.`` I only have 2 or 3 freinds~~they are my freinds.~~ I have no need for any more.``will blow up the sk00l?~~No. I listen to KoRn, ORGY and limp bizkit, along with RATM and several other "dark" bands. will I kill anybody?~~ No. I spend the entire day in front of a bash prompt ore using the KDE.~~I will not kill anyone. why? because I have the fundamental understanding that life is worth something. That the games that I would be as brutal and mean as them if I did something like that. They act like little children. for much longer. They are putting the first graders who have creativity and lack social skills on medication for their "own good". Yeah right. They are stifling their creativity, and turning them into one of the "beautiful people"(stupid people). Geeks are a dying breed, and so is any type of person who is useful to society(mathematicians, doctors, biochemists). Just think, in a few decades, there won't be enogh smart people to replace us, nad the world will fall apart. If this happens, then life will suck for them. I suggest that the stupid people(like the author of the article) be loocked away on a small island(or make that a very large one) specially designated for the stupid people. Ever notice how the pretty people never have to anything for themselves? All us smart people do it for them
You see, your are an asshole. You are only supposed to marry the one person you are going to spend the rest of your life with. Wives are not property. You can't just throw them away when they get old and get a new one. You should just go to hell.
Steve Jobs is nothing but a dope-smoking hippie in his 40s. Kick him out, and replace hime with someone who can run a company(like Gil Amelio). You may say: "Well Steve founded Apple, he's great for the company!". Well, I know everyone likes Steve(So do I), but he can't run a company very well. All he does is think about the short term, Gil thought long term. So, If you're afraid of losing all the publicity, put Jobs and his 'reality distortion feild' in marketing. Put Woz at the head of engineering, and Gil as the CEO.
I like to listen to ORGY or KoRn when coding. ORGY helps my creative juices flow into perl and HTML, while KoRn let's me concentrate on everything else. I don't have a fuckin clue why, but it just does
If they start to use impalnts, tatoos, or any other formas of identification, f*** them. I wouldn't even carry around a barcoded badge, my picture's enough. Why would the school system need to know my SSN? Why? It makes absolutely no sense! The give you an ID number when you go into kndergarden, so why do they need your SSN? I think that schools should kill IDs altogether
I know just what you're looking for. Wired Global Communications has built a prototype of the CD^3. Basically it's a discman that plays MP3's and regular Cd's too. It costs about $399 US

Be had this, but the BeBox never sold, the Mac has this, but OS X's interface is horrible, and only Amiga can do this while still allowing a user to muck arund in a system. Too bad they will never see the light.

Is it true that you reproggrammed the Apple ][ each mornig, in hex, from memory, before it had storage? If so, how?

Copyrights don't need to exist anymore. I say, to hell with copyrights and liscences! Just public domain things like they used ot be before the copyright laws came to be! Freely inovaste, but live in constant fear of having oyuir wotk stoledn! whoops. that doesn't work. well, RA files quality sucks. It's not the millenium until 2001(well, it was really in 96, 97, or 98 cause they were off by a few years. Unless you use the common era calender).
Do i go to football games?~~ No, because it's a bumch of grown men beating the shit out of each other, to get a ball from one end of a dirt patch to the other~~I find it uncivilized.~~ they are the ones who will one day get paid to beat people up ! And will i kill anyone?~~ No.``
I only have 2 or 3 freinds~~they are my freinds.~~ I have no need for any more.``will blow up the sk00l?~~No. I listen to KoRn, ORGY and limp bizkit, along with RATM and several other "dark" bands. will I kill anybody?~~ No. I spend the entire day in front of a bash prompt ore using the KDE.~~I will not kill anyone. I play lazertag and go ot the arcade. I will not kill anyone.
why? because I have the fundamental understanding that life is worth something. That the games that I would be as brutal and mean as them if I did something like that. They act like little children. Thjey make fun of people, hit them. like little children I have the intelligence to know better, they don't.

for much longer.
