  1. Publicity on Sun Demurs On Open-Source Java · · Score: 2, Insightful

Sun seems to be doing a wonderful job of creating publicity for itself despite accomplishing anything. That's pretty clever, if they just keep announcing stuff then deannouncing for the publicity they stir up. I'd still like to see Java opened, but this furthers the thought that it just won't happen. Not any time soon, atleast.

  2. What's the need for XSN? on XSN Sports - It Coulda Been A Contender? · · Score: 1

It doesn't seem like there is still a need for XSN, as EA has announced it will be making their games for Xbox Live. Sure, XSN games were good, but they don't compete with the fame of EA titles. No football game can ever beat Madden, same goes for NBA Live, imho.

  3. Re:Gee, I wonder why? on New Viruses Hit 30-Month High · · Score: 2, Interesting

Do you really think that most of "today's youth" is capable of writing viruses in any mature manner? Other than Visual Basic programs that delete files, which isn't "mature," I don't. Your assumption that viruses are written by "rebellious and outcast youth" is not only unfounded, but completely absurd.

Moreover, what do you suggest on preventing virus writing? Not arresting and punishing virus writers? Yes, that will work. Let people run around and break into computers maliciously and ruin things. That will definitely deter people from doing it.

Of course software writers should create better applications and OSes, but that doesn't excuse malicious intent on someones part.

Also, creating viruses doesn't hurt Microsoft. People will buy Windows regardless of the amount of viruses available for it. You're hurting the average joe, not Microsoft.

  4. Sun Benefits? on Sun will Open Java's Source · · Score: 3, Insightful

Of course the opening of Java's source will be neat for "the community," but it doesn't seem like a very smart business move for Sun. There might be some temporary benefits in publicity, but no real benefits in the long run. Atleast if they keep it closed, they'll retain some control, and have the ability to possibly make money off of it.

However, i'm sure they know this, and that's why it's not being released now, and it probably never will be, unless they somehow conjure up a way to release the source and retain complete control of it.

    ...Which seems impossible to me.
