It's 'not a PDA', but... it's website is jackito-pda.com. Interesting. On another note, using your thumb on the screen is messy, it gets the screen all greasy and dirty. You can use your thumbs on a regular PDA, if you are so inclined. Also, it's powered by AA batteries. Ugh, i'll stick with my lithium rechargable battery.
High Sound quality via Screen!
Apparently the speaker is beneath the screen, that's kind of neat.
This seems to me to probably be the equivalent of a "PDA" you can buy at walmart for $15.
You'd have no character advancement, missed all the buildup
Well, they managed to skip The Hobbit and it made sense. Why wouldn't it make sense with just the third one?
So they should have released one 10 hour movie?
Well, they could've not made three 4-hour movies, and just made one that didn't have every teeny scene in it. I'm sure everyone can name a ton of scenes that they thought were not absolutely necessary. Guess what you do if you want ever miniscule detail? You can read the books; however, most people are probably too lazy for that, unfortunately. Buying the series of books is probably cheaper, as well; especially with the way you get gouged with ticket prices and whatnot as theaters today.
Yes, I do dislike the Star Wars trilogy, but I don't see how that's relevant. (I'm sure i'll get modded down for not liking star wars, but what can ya do.)
Having three seperate movies kind of irked me anyway; I mean one realllly only needed to see the last movie. The first two movies were okay, but I don't like paying to go see a movie without an ending, that's a cop-out, especially when I have to wait a year or more for the next one. Their whole let's milk the hell out of this series mantra isn't something that's admirable.
I, for one, am not going to spend $20 on movie tickets to go see the same movie extended a tad bit. But, alas, i'm sure the die-hard people will, and that's why they do it. I didn't really like the trilogy anyway, which might make me a little biased.
If everyone followed that rule, 90% of slashdot wouldn't be able to touch a computer, let alone mess around inside it. Wait a second, I like that rule!
A floppy for a swap partition? I don't know much 1.44mb of swap is going to help... even barring the fact that swapping from a slow device such as a floppy drive is probably bad anyway.
One option would be to continue using a floppy disk to boot your linux system. Rolling a floppy distro isn't too hard, plenty of tutorials on google. However, apart from how a normal floppy would do it, add the memory stick to the fstab and mount it as/usr or/home, etc.
I'm sure there are better ways to do it, but that idea popped up to me.
Satellite is available anywhere there is uninhibited view of the sky, which is most places that don't have cable or DSL. However, satellite is expensive to set up... $500 installation fee from DirecTV last I checked.
Secondly, dial-up is not that bad, and it's definitely not as bad as your exaggeration. It's not comparable to broadband, but it's not unbarable. To further speed up dialup browsing, one should use a web cache, which is very helpful.
Being a unfriendly about it will definitely not win the project users. Unless one is writing a bsd-variant to be used by 5 people, it's better to try being diplomatic with one's attitude regarding such. Unless, of course, you want to end up with a reputation rivalling that of Mr. de Raadt. Of course, you have the freedom to speak as you which, just making a suggestion.
A sad day? Konfabulator isn't a new idea. Even if it is, why is having Apple take that idea and create their own version a bad idea? Competition is good for the consumer.
If Konfabulator is better than Apple's version, people will use it. If not, people won't use it. I don't see what's wrong with that. I think Arlo Rose is just upset his project is going to lose it's popularity unless he can somehow compete with Apple, which is unlikely. That's just selfish on his part to care more about his project's fame than another alternative being created.
On a side note, at least Apple can handle slashdot's network abuse, unlike konfabulator.com.
What do you expect him to do when the press follow him around then ask him a question about terrorism? He didn't schedule the press conference, obviously. He scheduled the tee time, they just happened to follow him there and ask him.
Well, Moore's notorious reputation for lying and staging scenes is enough to make me not pay to want to see it.
Bowling for Columbine was stocked full of lies and staged scenes; most famously, where he goes into a bank and walks out with a gun, skipping the screening process, the having to put a $1000 deposit, the day or so wait, etc, instead he shows it as him walking in then walking out. Way to spin the hell out of that. Not to mention the other lies in that movie.
Secondly, the commercial's propaganda is bad enough. The scene where it shows Bush talking about the War on Terror then jumps to "Watch me hit this golf ball." What the hell do you expect him to do when you find him on a GOLF COURSE? You guessed it, he's going to play golf. Crazy, I know.
Furthermore, this movie isn't going to sway people away from Bush. The prime point in it is against the War in Iraq. Guess what? Kerry supported it too, he also said they had WMDs. If anything, it's going to give votes to Nader, which isn't going to help the left kick Bush out at all.
Don't support Michael Moore and his far left socialist views. If it was up to him he'd have you being taxed $0.80 per $1.00, as he stated on an interview with Bill O'Reilly. Just get the movie off your favorite p2p network, assuming you want to watch, as one reporter put it, "incoherent rambling of propaganda."
Google's spam filtering better be good. Do a search on google with site:google.com inurl:gmail +"a-". Guess what you get? That's right, a huge list of gmail invites for easy spam harvesting. Way to go google.
Why wouldn't someone end up suing over "Thunderbird," thus causing them to change that? For example, Ford Motor's with their line of Thunderbird cars, or maybe someone else? Seems like Thunderbird is just as bad as Firebird.
Interestingly enough, the new client has the option to compile it yourself. The old client didn't have this option, or atleast it was very difficult to find, _if_ it was available. Now maybe it can be ported to archs that were previously unsupported.
A lot of people that I've talked to find the threading model to be annoying. I particularly avoid gmail for regular email just because of it.
However, it is really nice for mailing lists. I hope they eventually decide to give you an option to pick between normal listing and their threading model. Who knows, maybe they will, it is still in beta. For now, I use my gmail account solely for bugtraq and the sort.
Not to be labelling trolling, but in all seriousness, what is better about Firefox than Safari? Safari seems rock solid and really fast to me. Why use firefox?
Regarding the three strike policy, in my opinion, it is unbelievably ridiculous. It's easily cruel and unusual punishment. Not that much coming out of California isn't inane.
Furthermore, I don't really consider spam equivalent to theft, unless the spamming is done through compromised systems. I just think the jailing of spammers is excessive. Appropriate fines would be more fitting, methinks.
Put spammers in jail for 5-10 years? Wow. That's ridiculously excessive. Sure, you may not like spam, but it doesn't personally harm you.
Five to 10 years in prison is what people whom commit manslaughter recieve. Although I don't particularly like spam, it's not equivalent to manslaughter. Moreover, it's not rocket science to run a spam filter.
Quoting the article... these Russian gangs aren't constrained by any anti-spam or cybercrime laws in their home country
So, I think it's more of the governments not having legislation governing spam than the citizens supporting it.
As for the Chinese ISPs hosting the spam, the article states that the spammers are setting up firewalls preventing the ISPs from seeing what is actually being hosted, therefore preventing them from stopping it.
"will some free service offer updated schedules so the devices know what's on"
TVGuide.com offers free listings. Seems like a script to parse that web page and put it into something the PVR can use wouldn't be rocket science. Of course, there is the aspect that TVGuide.com requires a registration, but that could be worked out fairly easily.
It's a shame that so much is getting through the patent office regardless of the obviousness of prior art existing. The least they could do is open up google and search for other, older projects that have done this. Of course, since patents are such a big deal, I would expect a lot more rigorous examination into the proposed patent... too bad we don't get that.
"it would be pretty surprising if the IRS granted them charitable status. It's usually reserved for charities, artistic or literary foundations, churches, etc."
I don't see why it would be that surprising. The NetBSD Foundation is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. Slashdot mentioned this awhile back.
An interesting tidbit of this article is that they "wants to annually recycle 240 a thousand computers" anually for public telecenters, libraries, and schools. Couldn't tell if they plan to put Open Source OSes onto these computers, but I would assume so. This is a lot better than wasting valuable hardware. Not to mention most schools can function fine with slower processors as opposed to 3Ghz ones, which are substantially more expensive.
I find it a bit ironic you have to go back 120 years to find something good the French has done for us.

Indeed I did. No response yet, after almost a week. Unfortunately.
