They are certainly competing, yes. But Google doesn't have as much "product" to offer. Their search may be ingrained in all of us and they may have had a great IPO, but I don't know how they'll hold up. Don't get me wrong; I love Google. They're great, and I'm sure they'll continue to expand the information market. But AdWords and other ad-generated revenue can only take a company so far. They must continue to expand well beyond their current realm to find additional revenue and if they can do so, I'm sure they'll do it well. If they don't I think they'll hit a sort of "revenue cap" where the market won't support a giant like MS with ad delivery as income.
The world may be changing to one where the flow of information is so rich and accessible that we need not remember all types of abstract facts and figures; we'll just look them up when we need them. With such a world of data at our fingertips at all times, our minds will be freed from hard data to concentrate on concepts and ideas through more objective thought processes. I wonder if such limitless access to information could eventually change the way people think, enabling them to concentrate less on the actual information and more on the relationships/concepts at hand?
Yeah. but what about those who want to run it via the run dialog or from a terminal? typing that crap out IS annoying. even in Windows I can type "calc" into the run box. C'mon. don't assume everyone uses the menus all the time.
I was walking home from highschool once when I came upon a bundle of video tape (it was the two reels from inside the case, half unrolled) in a ditch. Nearby I found half a box to an *adult* video.
I figured maybe the two matched so I took the reels home, cleaned them up, rolled them onto two new spindles, put them in an empty case and crossed my fingers hoping it wouldn't get stuck in the VCR.
It didn't, and, needless to say, the tape had a number of good runs left.
