  2. British Telecom using this soon for live service on GSM Standard for WiFi and Bluetooth Compatibility · · Score: 1

British Telecom are launching a service based on this early next year. Users will have a handset that uses both GSM and Bluetooth. Bluetooth is used when the user is at home, with the handset making VoIP calls.

  3. The technology behind this on AT&T Wireless Announces Music ID Service · · Score: 1

Unless AT&T have come up with their own algorithms, this is probably a re-selling of the service from Shazamentertainment who have several over mobile operators on their books. They use a proprietary pattern recognition technology (patent-pending) that can identify recorded audio even under noisy conditions. The Shazam service runs on a hosted service platform and is driven by Europe's largest music information database - over 1,600,000 music tracks, metadata and cover art - that was built by Shazam.

  4. UK OFTEL definition of 'broadband' on How Broad is Broadband? · · Score: 5, Informative
In the UK regulation of comms services is by OFTEL. Their definition of broadband is as follows:
'Broadband' is used in this brief to refer to higher bandwidth, always-on services, offering data rates of 128 kbps and above.
    and
This definition of broadband is used by Oftel for the purposes of measuring take-up in order to capture the dynamic range of services available to residential and business consumers that are classed by the industry as broadband. This definition gives Oftel data that is comparable with broadband take-up figures published by other countries in Europe. For the purposes of specific market assessment and definitions of regulatory obligations, different definitions may be appropriate.

  5. License is for CAPACITY, not number of CPUs on Solaris 9: Sticker Shock · · Score: 2, Informative

The Sun licensing page says "User Licenses are based on system capacity, not on the number of CPUs installed" (emphasis mine). So it's not the number of CPUs that you actually have, but the number that you could install in the future!
Taking this literally you still need to buy a license for a system with two CPU slots, but no CPU installed!

  6. Re:Flow Control on UDP + Math = Fast File Transfers · · Score: 2

It doesn't matter if you lose data in the stream. You actually send more data than the original file - but the receiver has to receive approx the same amount of data as the original file (about 5% if I remember correctly). Thus you can send 100kbytes (for a 50k file) but the receiver only needs to get half the packets - so loss is not a problem.
Think about simultaneous equations. If I have 2 unknowns I can solve it if I have two equations. Now imagine that I send you 4 equations, each with the two variables. You only need to receive 2 of the equations to be able to reconstruct the original two pieces of data.
The other neat thing about this is that you can multicast traffic - and each receiver can start listenin when it wants - so if a receiver starts listening halfway through you can still get the whole file!

No - it's not compression. You actually need to send more data than the original file - but the receiver has to receive approx the same amount of data as the original file (about 5% if I remember correctly).

  8. Reminds me of Realnames on Phone Numbers Instead of URLs? · · Score: 2

This reminds me of Realnames who tried to map "real names" to DNS names. They still exist but does anyone use it? In fact companies seem to prefer changing there real names to match their domains! Here in the UK a frozen food superstore changed it's name to iceland.co.uk.

  9. IETF have already done this on Phone Numbers Instead of URLs? · · Score: 5

See RFC2916 This describes how to map E.164 numbers (telephone numbers) in the DNS. The primary purpose is so that you can email your phone (for example), but there is nothing to stop this system mapping a phone number to a WWW page. Unfortunately this RFC uses the existing reverse-DNS .arpa domain so the phone numbers are written BACKWARDS! Not very friendly.

  10. Re:BE CAREFUL! on Laser Vision Correction? · · Score: 1

In the UK people who have had laser correction to their eyesight can have problems with keeping their drivers license, particularly as they get older. Apparently this is for the reason mentioned above - the vision can degenerate after the surgery. My wife considered laser surgery but wants to keep on riding her motorcycle into her old age....

  11. Re:Where this is headed on MAME running on Kodak Digital Camera · · Score: 1

Reminds me of the appliances in Michael Marshall Smiths books Only Forward and One of Us. Only Forward is full of intelligent (and humorous) appliances (including street lamps) whilst in One of Us the kitchen appliances are a key plot line. Read both these recently and laughed out loud - but also makes you think where appliances are heading.

  12. Source will help create exploits? on Sun to release Solaris source code · · Score: 1
Sun is hoping that by simply having the source code available, programmers will trust the software more as they can now see its inner workings.

Surely being able to view the source code will make it much easier to develop exploits to break Solaris security? The guy that cracked the PCWeek SecureLinux box used the source of the photoad cgi script to develop an exploit. Access to the Solaris code will help too - especially in the short term. I'm sure Sun haven't done a line-by-line audit of the code.
