  1. Even if you believe these numbers: on Consumers Unlikely To Pay $500 for iPhone · · Score: 1

Even if these numbers are completely accurate, and you assume that 200 out of the 300 million people in the US are cell phone buyers, this still means 300,000 iPhones would be sold in the US. Given that Steve Jobs said his companies goal was to have 1 million iPhones out in the wild, globally, by the end of 2008, this number is extremely reasonable. Remember, prices will drop, additional incentives will be created, etc. Also, keep in mind that once people see the iPhones in action, when the Jones' next door have one, etc., this no longer becomes a completely rational purchase. The iPhone won't work for me, so I doubt I'll ever buy one, but I still fully expect this to be a hit.

  2. slightly ridiculous on Offshored Identity Theft · · Score: 3, Insightful

Putting the focus on the fact that the thieves were working in outsourced operations is beside the point. The necessary assumption for this story to make sense, is that these off-shore workers steal more money from Americans than other Americans do. While I don't have statistics in front of me, I highly doubt that the off-shore theft problem is even comparable to in-house work. Big deal, some people stole a relatively small sum of money... it's only news because those "evil Indians" are taking all our jobs and are now stealing our money too!

  3. Way too complicated on 'Geek Speak' Confuses Net Users · · Score: 1

Duh! Tech jargon like "DON'T OPEN ATTACHMENTS YOU AREN'T EXPECTING" is obviously too complicated.

Keep in mind that it isn't always NASA's first choice to cut projects off... The Bush Administration has majorly cut back NASA's budget, leaving them with little choice. If NASA had unlimited funds, they certainly would be doing a lot more...

  5. Google definitely would buy into this... on Translation Software That Learns by Reading · · Score: 5, Interesting

Don't remember exactly where I read this, but google apparently has long believed that there is enough data on the internet alone to be able to intelligently translate... What these guys claim to have done is, it would seem, the missing peace of the puzzle for google. I wouldn't be surprised if google gets in on this.

  6. Bill Gates does lots of good on Gates Pledges $750M to Vaccinate Children · · Score: 5, Interesting

I am friends with the daughter of the head of the Gates Foundation... Bill has told her (my friend) that his goal is to give as much as possible of his money to charity. He actually really cares about the world and his foundation and its work is proof of his commitment.

Many may disagree with Microsoft's practices but Bill Gates is extremely committed to the world.
