Try unpacking the kernel source to recompile a new kernel with modified acpi / apm options. Under APM there is an option for alternate powerdown method...not sure what it is called off hand but that should work.

Yeah right. This guy has obviously never tried installing windows on a linux machine. Just see how friendly the windows setup program is towards your boot sector... yeah. Unlike most linux software which will try to preserve and inform the user of the current drives partitions and status so all can be worked out peacefully.
Perhaps you should have tried one of those x10 like microcams that transmit video wirelessly? Only $20USD down the drain should it crash and break. It would have been a lighter/cheaper alternative. I believe you can find a cheap one by searching ebay for "cctv wireless".
