I have been watching the 2.4 development for months. In my experience it is quite a visible improvement from 2.2 in many aspects. I e it for my work daily, and would find it very difficult to revert back to the last version. Comparisons to photo$hop aside, the gimp is shaping up quite nicely.
How can this reviewer complain about rough edges when Gutsy hasn't even reached Release Candidate status? Those kind of criticisms are fud until they relate to a formal Ubuntu release. Canonical and friends have plenty of time to fix the small stuff before Gutsy's out.
I have been watching the development versions of Gimp for months, and I can say that there have been a ton of improvements in the UI and functionality of Gimp. For all the naysayers I recommend that they check out the release candidate of Gimp 2.4, which is included on development Ubuntu live CDs and possibly fedora. These improvements, along with the massive scripting potential, give the more-than-casual Gimp user something worthwhile to work with.
Yes, the new developments in KDE and Gnome only require more resources and power. I feel more at home using a tweaked WM myself. Fvwm is pretty old school, and XFCE is a good compromise. Enlightenment17 is the most elegant and responsive WM that I know of.
Enlightenment 17 is the only modern desktop solution I know of that packs a ton of bling without even a trace of bloat. Definitely my favorite bloat-free software.
I mean, it wont be long before the new release of Ubuntu, Breezy, is out officially. I'm already using it with little trouble. It is going to have TONS of new improvements, most notably the new Gnome. I can't see how Debian is going to keep up the rapid pace of Ubuntu releases at this rate.
