You know, I see people say this kind of thing all the time, but I have never seen any kind of statement about how fast Mars will lose its atmosphere, except in Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy where it is asserted that the rate of loss is actually quite slow.
Titan holds on to its 1.6 atmospheres of Nitrogen quite easily. It is cold of course but it is cold on Mars as well and 1.6 atmospheres at 1/8 of a gee is equivalent to four atmospheres for Mars and they don't need that much.
Then again, makes me wonder if there might be a small market for 911 only cells powered by non-rechargable lithium batteries for the 10 year shelf life.
Good idea. Maybe it could be combined with a disposable emergency beacon. Very handy if you get lost in the bush.
Using self-signed certificates inside an enterprise is fine so long as all the clients have the certificate authority's public certificate installed. Key distribution mechanisms like group policy make it simple.
Sadly Firefox makes it less secure because it uses its own key store rather than the host operating system's, so users must manually import the certificate before attempting to visit an SSL-secured website.
I can think of scenarios where this would make firefox more secure and a browser which uses certs from the OS.
This is timely, as I'm looking at implementing SSL for a web system at the moment, and I'm seriously pondering using self-signed certificates. Paying for a certificate from an authority is, quite frankly, a rip-off. The companies don't need to do anything for that money, and the notion that they provide some service where you can trust the site for the issued certificate is laughable. I don't know how your system works but I should point out that you can get end to end encryption with SSH tunnelling.
Somebody I know forwarded me a message saying something like There is a virus on your system. To remove it search for the file COMMAND.COM and delete it..
Shortly after that I got a panicky phone call. Apparently they didn't have a working system any more.
If you want rights consummate with mine, I also expect you to assume the requisite duties: paying income tax (including income earned abroad), reporting for jury duty, etc. So in the US, I can be murdered but you can not because you pay taxes?
I will be availing myself of an ssh connection to retrieve my data after going through US customs.
How do you propose doing that securely. If you bring the host key with you it can be nabbed at the border. If you don't bring the host key you have to assume the finger print is correct. The only secure information channel you have is inside your head.
You know about SSL right? Unless the feds are smarter than even the nuttiest nut could ever dare believe "Echelon" is hardly foolproof. If I enter the US with the intention of downloading my data after crossing the border I will need to being a secret of some kind with me. Any encryption simple enough for me to carry the secret in my head can be cracked by brute force.
Motif? What place would a set of GUI widgets have in the "server room" (as you state)? Windows in the server room is administered with GUI tools. The non availability of unix GUI tools is one reason to use windows.
openmotif seems to have disapeared from pkgsrc so I went to motifzone to get the sources but they pointed me to sourceforge. But the SF page only seems to have CVS, not tarballs or binaries.
And copy/paste is still broken in the current version of lesstif...
I worked with a guy who as a bit depressed (and manic, part of the time now that I think about it).
He started putting his possessions up for sale at work. It went on for a while and got a bit silly when it became clear that literally everything was for sale.
I was a bit worried because some people who do this are looking forward to a more radical life change than moving to a different country.
Pardon my total ignorance of the subject, but does this mean that it might occasionally snow on mars? Or would the environment be too different to allow it? The area the lander in is covered by ice during the winter so we are going to find the answer to your question quite soon.
They are distributing the software and have to provide an offer of the source. I am sure this came up with distributions who were basing their distro off Ubuntu and assumed their customers could get the source from there.
When you think about it, it makes sense. Even if they base their software off a distribution from a known source that source might not be around when it is needed.
Interesting. Purchasing a car battery is expensive (both up front and every 3-5 years when you have to replace it), plus environmentally bad. The battery will likely offset any gains to be had from the solar installation itself. He could use a battery from a car with a dead cell. Lights will still work at 10V. A new battery should last more than five years. A cheap battery where I live is about the same price as the solar cell, and the application is not particularly demanding.
You could always use a gell cell in place of the lead acid battery.
Hey! Why does the word "guillotine" jump into my head?
Its funny I work for a french company and the Sales and Marketing department keeps sending emails around saying they have lost their guillotine. Personally I am happier for the S&M dept not to have a guillotine.

He sells rugs for a living. How hard can it be?
Hey don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel.
Thanks. I have been going sigless for too long.
PI'm just flabbergasted that the ice could exist so close to the surface without sublimating purely from solar warming of the soil.
The soil on Mars is cold enough (say -50 C) to keep ice from sublimating below a certain depth. From the pictures I would say that depth is 50-100 mm.The Great While Handkerchief must be nearby.

... you've got clouds and rain and much less than 12 hours of sunshine available on any given day year round.
It depends on where you are.At the Equator: solar
At the Poles: wind
In between: combination of the two
It was easy enough in Utah.
You could always use a gell cell in place of the lead acid battery.
Thats what killed the Parrot. They had to burn down the trees to control inflation of the leaf.
Cripes they must all have been so rich with the trees gone.
