I *really* hate to nitpick, but ya know... as system is ONLY as good as it's implementation. If managers don't hire stupid people or noobs that have only a piece of paper saying that they can do XYZ... EXPECT MAJOR PROBLEMS. However, if they hire people with REAL WORLD knowledge and experience, ones who have worked with the equipment and technologies required, ones who understand what it takes to implement and support said systems, Maybe something might get done right. This is rather platform *and* software independent, don't ya think? I am stuck using antiquated software on antiquated HW/OS systems, and yet it still seems to get the job done right, without constant attention. That's because it was IMPLEMENTED properly. However, our key reliance system was implemented IMPROPERLY... Netbackup 5 running on Solaris 5.7 on a Sunfire 250, and of course, it has constant problems and needs constant attention. I should throw the whole mess out and start over. Only... I don't know Solaris! *HAH* In this day and age, you can not afford to be single-platform-minded anymore. If you are, you'll find yourself out the door. Ask me, I'll show you.
Oh my god... I remember they used to show that on HBO *WAY* back in the day... probably right around '79. How funny! I had no idea you could pick it up these days... though, 20 bucks. OUCH.
So what about the fact that Alcohol and Cigarettes kill kill kill??? People don't smoke marijuana and go shoot up a MacDonald's. Order one of everything, maybe. Especially if they are a chronic illness sufferer that hasn't been able to eat in six months. *feh* All the studies show that marijuana HELPS people, not kills them like the LEGAL drugs.
Oh dear God, that's a *scary* thought. Bug-free, Open Source Drivers License/State ID/Licensing/Registration system?? Just how long would it take for this system to become compromised? You can bet that *someone* out there will focus all their time and energy into trying to crack that system for ID Theft purposes. If we don't... They will.
I actually got my first raise in 3 years. Granted, it was only 3.5%, but for a year when I've been plagued by everything imaginable, and our company is in major recovery mode... it's a pretty good sign. Not to mention, we're hiring like gangbusters! Problem is, it's only sales.
Wow... man. I knew that with the death of DEC would eventually see the death of the Alpha. I worked on these babies when they first debuted in 94/95, and again at MCI in 97. I worked on both the NT4 platform and the Digital Unix platform, and they were some of the sweetest machines I've ever had the privelege of working with. I wish I had stuck around with them, but I made the right decision leaving the day Worldcom bought 'em.
Wonder what ever happened to that server farm.. we had 8 Alpha-servers round-robinned to do call routing and billing. Fastest things on microchips at the time. The speed at which they could process a call from start to finish was insane! Especially given that this was 7 years ago now. Ahhhhh... the good ole days!:P
I believe it was originally pitched in '87. There were some *really* great topics back on Usenet, talk about some massive flamewars! I believe at one point, there was talk of even scripts being swiped. HELLO!!! Half the character names were the same (Guhl-Dukhat comes to mind)! Paramount said no way, no space station, we're not gonna do it. Screw the big guys. I guess time heals all wounds.
If this does come to fruition, they better bring back Harlan Ellison as a consultant!:D
