I've converted to Castles & Crusades by Troll Lord Games. Back to basics: real roleplaying with an updated d20 mechanic and a simple resolution system for almost everything [ SIEGE Engine (tm) ]. It allows me to convert and or use 0E, 1E, 2E, & 3E stuff and play it so your old books are still good You don't need minatures or maps and the having fun in the game comes first - the rules are not at all set in stone. Rules lawyers and munchkins need not apply. Rules light and very fast to play. E. Gary Gygax actually worked for Troll Lord Games before he died and finally got a chance to release His Dungeon with them.
I'm teaching the 8 years old to do something besides sit in front of the TV this weekend, in fact.
There alre a lot of free choices out there too, Basic Famtasy Role Playing, OSIRC, Labrinth Lords... Why stick with WoTC with there are better, less expensive alternatives?
You changing the subject and altering history a bit doesn't change the facts. Women (and men) are responsible for their own defense. That was my "thesis" and if you don't like it then that is fine but that doesn't automatically make it wrong.
I used martial arts and bodybuilding as an example that women can be equal to men and you changed the subject. Your appeal to patriotism was pointless.
If you want to play with the statistics then I'll give all 100 women (on the island of yours) handguns and tell them it is ok to kill any man who makes them feel threatened and make sure they are mentally equipped to do so. Now what do you do to change the subject or odds? We can do this all day. In fact, I often do. It is my job.
Your idea of what happened in Okinawa is mistaken as well. Look into it more before you make more references to "cartoon ninjas". I'm talking about reality, not fantasy, here.
The nature of your comments seem to make a case that you've never been exposed to real violence. The "20 years younger" comment leads me to believe you haven't been in any of the wars (real or fabricated) that we've had either.
For the record: I *have* had a buddy blown in half in a Humvee. Fortunately I also had some make it home as well. I'm talking from experience. Where are you talking from?
So you are saying what? All women are weaker than men and less able to defend themselves, automatically? Talk about a BS blanket statement. I know feminists who might come to blows with you just for implying that.
Heck, any number of women boxers or martial artists in general could (at least) surprise you or I in a physical confrontation. The tone and timber of your voice scaring a 3-year old has nothing to do with whether or not your wife has trained with Rorion Gracie for 5 years. Do you think women bodybuilders or powerlifters need (or want) a 110 pound rent-a-badge walking them to their cars?
Just because some women have not taken the responsibility to learn to defend themselves does not mean that they are without fault if they choose to take a shortcut to their cars. The case is no different if you or your wife walks through a dark alley and get mugged. You both made a bad choice. Period. The question is, do either of you know how to handle yourself in that (or another possible) scenario?
"As for thinking of the children", well I have several kids ranged around 8 & 12 who can choke an adult male unconscious. It is made all that more easy because the adults never see it coming. The element of surprise for a woman or child makes it that much more effective. Choosing to live your life thinking "it will never happen to me" does not entitle anyone to play a special "victim" card if they are ever in a confrontation. If you don't take some responsibility for your own safety then that is your choice and it has nothing to do with you being weak, strong, male, female, young or old. You are free to ask some of my adult women students for their insights. But I suggest you don't raise your voice when you do it...
"Only a warrior chooses pacifism; others are condemned to it."
If your only weapon is pacifism then the "hateful and oppressive" will have an easy time of decimating your ranks. Sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in.

I'd mod this up but I don't have any points today for some reason.
Nice video. It actually cheered me up a bit. Interesting that the only 'religious' group featured was Buddhists. They even got Steven Hawking in on it. Very amusing.
The IDiots need to keep their religion out of science class. There was a time when "faith-based organizations" controlled education and ruled over the masses. It was called the Dark Ages, and to quote SG-1: "They didn't call it the Dark Ages because it was dark." We lost hundreads of years (?) of scientific progress because religion got to decide what was 'true'.
A Christian will complain about Islamic law or its teachings, but wants to enact 'Christian laws' and teach religion in place of science in the US. How can people not see the parallels or the dangers here?
For the record: it isn't just the fundamentalists. Stop placing the blame somewhere else and saying it is just 'radicals'. If you aren't part of the solution then you are part of the problem. 'Moderate' or even 'Progressive' religious groups give the 'radicals' a place to hide (often in plain sight) and a sense of belonging.
Stop listening to what a pastor/priest/whatever tells you about Evolution and read a book written by someone who actually understands it and is trying to explain it. Stop parroting what someone else said about Dawkins and read the 'God Delusion'. Think for yourself. Try to keep and open mind and be alert for 'selection bias'. While you are at it, stop lumping all of the Jesus-derived faiths together when you want the statistics on your side (71% of the US considers themselves Christian so we are a Christian nation, for example) and then say "They aren't 'True' Christians" when their ideology doesn't match yours. You don't get to have it both ways.
Teach Evolution. It is a fact, period. If you don't believe it then take a real stand against it: stop taking all of the antibiotics or other medications developed because of it. That includes insulin. Then pray to your Intelligent Designer to heal you. If you have an argument because Evolution is referred to by scientists as a 'theory' then jump off a cliff and pray to fly or something. Gravity is 'just a theory' too.
Thanks again for the video. Maybe The Discovery Channel should make a clip with all of the great things we've developed and learned due to Evolution. Set it to some great music. Maybe 'The Temples of Syrinx', the guys might just go for it if they were asked. Then at the end just print on the screen "Thank Evolution". Start by conciousness raising, right?
"Thank Evolution" might look good on a bumper sticker or something.
Even though I understand this whole thread is in jest, why else would you "assign people to protect NYCL" unless it was from a physical threat?
Bodyguards are for physical protection, that is what they are used for. I jokingly gave a reference to contacts who would fit the bill.
As for the aim being "to prevent the eventuality": if it is *eventually* going to happen anyway, then by definition you can't prevent it indefinitely so you WILL need another plan. You cannot prevent an eventuality, just delay it.
There are plenty of Kaju people in the NY area that can help if he looks them up. NYCL, I'd volunteer to do it, but I'm in the Midwest, so just remember some of the basics:
1) Don't block with your face 2) It only hurts until the pain goes away 3) The best defense is a great offense 4) Sticks and stones CAN break your bones 5) When Zen ends, the beatings begin
and one that may resonate with you
6) It's better to be judged by twelve than carried by six...;-)
I would think that since it seems that many on/. are bright* enough not to be taken in by religion, that they would also be smart enough to not be taken in by this con. Writing the BSA's software for them (quite possibly for free) is not the way to stand up for your non-beliefs or the rights of others who may prefer the affections of their same sex.
* For those of you who got the in-joke, I apologize for the pun, I couldn't resist. Ok, okaaay... I COULD resist, but I didn't WANT to.
I have to agree with this, even though I despise Blu-Ray for the DRM, the name is a good idea. People ask questions this way instead of assuming they know what HD-DVD is.
I often tell people I teach Martial Science instead of martial arts just so they ask what the difference is. I can then explain to them that Kajukenbo is a self-defense system that bares little resemblance to something flashy like Tae Kwon Do. I have a 2nd degree black belt in TKD and a 4th degree in Kajukenbo. *I* know the difference but 95% of the people on the planet think all "karate" is the same - and that it doesn't work in a fight thanks to TKD... Giving them the name lets them be educated & google the differences.
The Blu-Ray name is clever & catchy, inspiring visions of lasers and the future - even if the DRM blows.
If calls are coming into the US, to Americans, and the NSA is listening to them... Explain to me how the NSA is not simultaneously spying on the Americans? Do they only hear the foreign side of the conversation?
For those of you making references to The Thing" by John Carpenter with Kurt Russel in the 1980's...
That was a remake of a 1951 B&W movie "The Thing from Another World"... Which was loosely based on the short story / novella "Who Goes There?" by John Campbell in 1938.
Ironically, the 1983 film was more faithful to the source material...
Check out the story. It is a quick read and as usual, the book is better than the films, IMHO.

What about some details for this config?
If it works, I'm sure people would like to know about it. Not the fastest I've heard of, but rather long-range.
People THINK they know what terms mean based on past experience.
For that reason I tell people I teach "Martial Science" (TM) instead of "martial arts." They always ask me what that is or how it is different from other "karate" classes. I can then tell them my school focuses on realism in combat and having the proper self-defense mindset.
What we need are terms that people don't assume to understand so they can be taught.
The winners write the history.
Anyone who knows anything about technology
knows (for example) that Tesla was far superior
to Edison in intelligence & creativity.
He was as responsible for the light bulb as
Edison was (worked with him in his lab), AND Telsa invented flouresent lights, independant of Edison.
Edison did not invent something someone else COULDN'T. He PATENTED something first.
Do a patent search, Edison vs. Telsa. Who holds more patents? Who created more? Who is responsible for the electricity your computer is using RIGHT NOW?
One man will not make or break technology. It will happen in time.
Comparing mental intellect to physical prowess is also bogus. They are not interchangable. Intelligence & creativity are not things you can "learn" or "practice" like shooting baskets.
It will not matter in 100 years that my hometown St. Louis Rams won the Superbowl. But it will matter that someone invented alternating current.

I'd bet the 2nd group has considerably higher numbers.
Nuff said. CLI users ARE more computer literate because they can perform the same tasks EITHER WAY. GUI-only users can't make that claim.
