Of course its an intermediate step before we simply stream all audio from the net
OK, I realize that this is news to the/. crew but.....
NOT EVERYONE IS ON THE NET. Online music sales, even if you counted every single napster download as a sale, don't begin to touch the amount of music that is sold through normal channels.
Interesting, seeing as how I use my MD pretty much everyday and spend quite a bit of money on the increasingly wider array of media and other accessories for it.
how is this a troll? someone compares java to php, i point out the stengths versus weaknesses, and BAM it's a troll.

Yeah, seriously, I mean... this license ISN'T THE GPL. Somebody get a rope. [/sarcasm]
Why is OO the holy grail? Why does everything have to be done by the GPL? Why must everything that comes out fit into the little box that you find acceptable?
Have you ever written a GUI in Java? Swing is still a horrible pile of crap.
The GTK toolkit for Windows is rather stable in my experience. I've used it with an IDE and for some MySQL tools on nt4 and 2000. It isn't yet used very often, but that doesn't mean that a) it doesn't exist or b) it isn't stable.
I think this is great news. I've been dealing with signed Java applets for years now, and they're a needlessly difficult thing.
Aduva was just ludicrous, even when you don't count the fact that it totally screwed up my box.
It was graphically over the top, and the first time I launched it, without any message saying "checking libraries" or something, it took about 10 minutes to launch.
This is sweet, and it's pretty cool that you can use HelixUpdate to install it as well.
but still, they're trying to do away with our right to archival copies, by making it impossible to make them, while quietly not mentioning this impact.
'I think Microsoft is trying to paint the open-source community as being fascist; that all software have has to be free, or none of it can be,' said Behlendorf
I submit that the Bible is an outdated manuscript of social order and either needs to be revamped to accomodate for todays.... peculiarities, or we do away with it completely and become Aztecs.
There's no reason not to see what else this thing can do. It's completed it's mission, it's set to become nothing but space flotsam, why not fire it up and blow a few doughnuts?
I mean, even Kerouac would be less hippie. Are you a bonafide longhair (ah, what an industry the tech industry is, I can work for a Fortune 500 company and still have long hair), or is there just something about Neal Cassady that you admire?

The MD is far from dead.
astronomical amounts
best choice of words I've seen all week.

For *years* now I've been saying that Sun should just drop Swing and use QT or *any* other GUI component that is already on the market and proven.
If only we could get Sun to adopt this and replace swing with it, Java on the client side would gain SO much.
I've always wondered if he got his name from Bilbo/Frodo's sword.
/. with Sting? :]
Can we do an Ask
HEre they are, as reported on slashdot....
ummmm.... tivo and banner ads relate exactly how?

oh my GOD I love pokey. whenever i'm sitting at my desk, totally mired in logical crap, pokey can YANK me out of the box in a matter of minutes.
Check out Rudy Park, it's gotta be *the* most breathed-inspired strip I've yet seen, art-wise.
I thought the same thing about User Friendly as well, and Iliad has heard it about a bazillion times by now.
Breathed was just about the only thing keeping me going through the 80s....
If anyone can galvanize the left, it's these 2... Personally, I've had enough of Gore/Clinton/etc, and think it's their time. :]
ah, i getcha. makes much more sense now :]

No, buying a DVD copy does not entitle me to a VHS/laserdisc/etc. copy of the film
Well, actually, it does, there are laws protecting archival copies.
For some reason that continues to escape me, these rights are never mentioned in all of this copyright/encryption hooha.
Yes, that's right, HOOHA.
Anyway, this right is being trampled over left and right, but noone ever says a damn word about it.

They busted out their Apple II's and played Lunar Lander all weekend.
...and my parents thought that I was wasting time with it...
Your nick is an obvious paean to Neal Cassady.
I mean, even Kerouac would be less hippie. Are you a bonafide longhair (ah, what an industry the tech industry is, I can work for a Fortune 500 company and still have long hair), or is there just something about Neal Cassady that you admire?
The new ads are the most obnoxious, annoying advertising experiment I've yet seen.
I don't care if it is an interesting article, I'm not giving them the hits.
I thought the earlier poster was joking, but in case people didn't realize it...
That wasn't really Philip Glass on South Park. That was a spoof.
Maybe the "[OT]" stands for "Obvious Troll"?
