SOPA may have been sponsored by a republican, but when the Internet put the pressure on, it was only the republicans that backed out of sponsoring and supporting he bill.
And the Republican leadership in the house pulled the bill from the floor.
The only problem with all the stuff you want from government is that the people who will give it to you are also going to force SOPA on us.
And SOPA is worse an more dangerous than any of those things are good. And before you complain about it, yes freedom speech is really more important than social justice. Because without free speech you wouldn't even be able to point out social injustice.
Yep. If he paid public performance fees to play the song, then the composer should sit down and shut up.
Or.
They could give back all the ASCAP fees they've collected and do all the licensing for the song themselves.
Basically the rules, as cumbersome and bad as they are, allow you to play the music you want if you've paid the licensing agency.
These artists WANT these large onerous licensing agencies representing them, until someone they don't like plays their songs.
Tell you what, if you want to bitch about politicians playing your songs, dissolve ASCAP, get rid of their ridiculous licensing BS, and do it all on your own. That's fair.
But the larger problem is that, for many of the workers, the option is keep the job at the factory, or go back to dirt farming.
The factory is actually the better option. The problem here is that poverty in China is massive.
Like it or not these plants represent opportunity for those working there. Now, it is debatable that the plants should give the workers more opportunity and less work, but their options if they leave the plant are likely worse.
Quick question. So you're saying that they need to secure the system from the guards so that they can't use it to open the cell doors? Wouldn't it be assumed that the guards already have the implicit capability to open the cell doors?
I love how security discussions almost always evolve into someone arguing that some particular actor in the system needs to be prevented from doing something that is actually part of their job!!
Ah, you were doing so good, right up until that "far right" part.
If you fight the "far right" and remove them from office, you're going to be really surprised when the moderates and those on the left ram this thing through anyway.
There are some big names on the left side of the aisle supporting this too.
The message needs to be crystal clear ANYONE supporting this is due to be voted out, no matter what party they are in.
One real interesting thing I've noticed here is this:
The internet was built on technology that enabled it to route around damage and obstacles and continue functioning.
but...
Is the internet now such a powerful force that is has acquired the ability to route around potential damage to it in the off line world as well?
I guess we'll find out if this is true pretty soon.
Really, everyone acts like Citizens United was a front group for some giant corporation. They were just a bunch of folks who got together to pool their money to create a documentary about a candidate. People should be able to do this.
Now back to the previous question.
It is quite obvious where historians will place the beginning of the corporatization of the US.
It's the "Military-Industrial Complex" speech form Eisenhower that marks the beginning, or at least the first warning of it.
Yep. What I loved about the White Houes' response to the anti-SOPA petition at its web site was how they wanted ideas about what other actions they could take.
How about NOTHING!! We don't any more laws like this! DMCA is bad enough! They just need to stop.
But our politicians can never seem to stop themselves from having to "do something!!"
I swear I'm so pissed at the content industry for even trying this. They need to realize that they are at a tipping point and are very near causing everyone to rebel against them. Greed is not a moral stance, and that is the only thing that they are appearing to care about.
Obama is a singular individual who can kill this bill directly. He has more power over it becoming law than anyone else.
Damn right we need to know what his position on this bill is and why.
The next most important influences on this bill becoming law are Reid (already betrayed us by bringing it up for a vote) and Boehner (very likely to betray us by bringing SOPA to a vote in the house).
I just can't shake the feeling that when SOPA/PIPA passes, that the Internet will catch fire and rain down torment on 'our' elected officials and the content industry.
Perhaps all the shooting in the next revolution will happen online.
Most cities of any reasonable size at all have Chamber of Commerce organizations. These are always made up of groups of businesses that belong to the private Chamber organization. Sure they work with government in their municipalities, but they are private organizations.
The name US Chamber of Commerce strikes me as being a national incarnation of the local concept. As such, I don't think its name construes that its a government group.
There are so few major labels left that it can be implied that. Warner = RIAA

Not really, the Tea Party wa formed by the fiscal conservatives and not the religious right.
It's now viewed as having a religious component because of extreme meddling by the Repiblican party elite and their usurpation of the movement.
I generally abhor people who are one issue voters.
But, the Internet is the most powerful platform for free and open communication the world has ever seen.
My opinion now is that ANY politician from ANY party who supports crippling the Internet is not just undesirable, but is in fact my enemy.
I will be a single issue voter when the future of the Internet is on the line.
I agree, Capitalism is a horrible and awful economic system, but its still better than any other economic system we've ever devised.
Well, all of you welcoming our robot overlords now have a candidate you can believe in!!

Free Speech >> IP Piracy Enforcement

You're correct, we won't. Spending on a moonbsase would be an order of magnitude lower than funding Social Security.
Whether we build a moonbsase or not really has almost no bearing on the deficit. Yes, Social Security expenditures dwarf NASA spending by that much.
This is one thing that really frustrates me. It is possible for 9 of the last 10 years to be the warmest AND for the warming trend to have slowed.
But everyone acts like these facts must be contradictory, when they are not.
Rate of change is not the same measure as maximum values in a series.
Yep. I'm still deciding if I want to delete my twitter account or not.
I would be much more impressed if twitter said "we're leaving" to India instead of saying "ok, we'll censor our users tweets."
Very cowardly move on twitter's part.
Agreed.
No matter what anyone says. Today Twitter looks far more evil than Google.
Yes they should be.
Senator Al Franken has sponsored Net Neutrality legislation to allow them to be treated as such.
Of course, he's also sponsored PIPA which would force ISPs to filter every packet.....

Citizens United??!!! Are you serious?!
Really, everyone acts like Citizens United was a front group for some giant corporation. They were just a bunch of folks who got together to pool their money to create a documentary about a candidate. People should be able to do this.

Look at it this way. It's a low emissions way to generate power which will help combat global warming.
OR
It will set off the volcano and release particles into the atmosphere which will combat global warming.
It's all good!

Please make it stop!! We're not interested in overly expensive, glasses requiring, headache inducing televisions!
That's not a grammar error, that's a Freudian slip. Because SOPA really is the Stop Online Privacy Act.
Legit government agency?
