This is yet another conformation of the so called "China threat" mostly perpetuated by the current US government. For those who might not know, China successfully shot its own satellite out of orbit; a feat that was till then, only performed by Russia and the USA.
No matter what we do as Americans, we'll become less relevant in world affairs within a few decades as China overtakes us - worrisome indeed.
This kind of setup would be wonderful in countries along the equator. I recently visited Uganda, a country on the equator. This country is plagued with power problems yet it has abundant sunshine.
Just for your information: This country is incredibly cool temperature wise due to its relatively high altitude. Problem is: Poverty.
The solution to nuclear waste storage is to haul this waste into space. Such a journey can be planned such that it is perpetual - it never ends! With enormous distances from earth, there is no way this waste can affect us over here. What about that?
My near guarantee is that a substantial number of those systems are being loaded or will be loaded with "pirated" or "illegal" copies of Microsoft's Windows software. Now call me a troll.
This is yet another example of my president's misplaced priorities. Why won't he focus on issues that matter to the middle class folks of USA? Issues like: -
The crumbling education system
The mortgaging of our livelihood to countries like China, Japan and Russia
The massive budget deficit we now face, it's said that very soon, our country will be broke!
The un-functional foreign policy!
The unemployment situation that squeezes the middle class
Trade pacts or deals that solely benefit "big business"
Massive corruption. Even congressmen convicted of corrupt tendencies are still getting their pensions on our tab! Remember Haliburton?
IRAQ! Need I say more, on December 31st 2006, we lost our 3,000th marine
Cutting down on the rhetoric. It's good we now hear nothing of the "...Stay The Course..." category
Addressing the "lies" we've been fed on since he came into office. Restore dignity
Curious; where is "over here"? Never heard of unionized IT employees, even in Europe.
I will borrow a leaf from politicians and therefore not comment on individual situations. But what I can say is that I am very happy "over here." The other thing is all workers are in a union and are not segregated on a department by department basis.
That's our strength. In addition to all other perks, we get subsidized training on new technology.
I have been a victim of lying bosses, but since leaving that work environment, I have found happiness in a unionized work environment. Over here, your boss cannot do a thing to you. All workers appear to be treated equally which is good. This environment has its problems I agree, but I like it anyway.
90% of a country's population is caucasian, 6% is black, 3% is oriental and 1% is of other racial groups. The EU suddenly decides that it can only offer services to the majority, how fast do you think people's asses would be nailed to the wall?
Not so fast dude! The last time I checked, no body has ever chosen to be born caucasian, black, oriental or otherwise...on the other hand, there is likely a huge probability that all these folks that do not belong to the "chosen" platform to support actually chose to use the platform. And now, they are clamoring for support! Jeez!
Sorry in advance in case you made an application to whoever created you, to create you the way you are.
Call me a troll if you may but, Microsoft must be laughing on hearing such news. You see, there were [Linux] zealots here saying Microsoft should release versions of Windows it does not support to the "community." This "community" could do a better job supporting these operating systems.
My question though is whether what is happening to this Fedora Legacy would not happen to released Windows versions. I have my doubts.
I do just like you do, but in this case I still would like my meat products labeled. Who knows, future technology could link diseases of the time to cloned meat or beef of today.
I mean, what about providing their movies in a "cross platform" format like flash? Right now, what you are presented with, is a choice between Apple's QuickTime and Windows Media formats.
For us on the Linux platform, more work has to be done in order to watch these trailers. We succeed most of the time but when we fail, the whole situation sucks big time!
Can't wait 25 years to know how my president mislead us into this Iraq quagmire. We just lost 100 people so far this month and counting! Very sad indeed. More American lives have now been lost in Iraq as compared to those that died on 9/11.
As I said, these Russians hardly blow their own trumpets. Americans are consumed with consumerism. Tetris, a Russian invention, never got all the publicity it got till the Americans got involved. We Americans are good at publicity.
If Russian tech is so backward, why is it that when they make a sale to the so called rogue states, our state department screams! Here's why: We in most cases, have no answer to such equipment.
These very deadly weapons cannot have been created by a backward nation. They solely built the MIR space station, which lasted more than 3 times its anticipated life span. We had nothing! We also have our own problems like corruption, nepotism, cronyism and bigotry.
Before I go, I should inform you that my government touted the stealth bomber as the best, most sophisticated aircraft ever built. The Russians said it could be shot down. As usual, our military men brushed them off till one was shot down in the Balkans. Now I hear that that expensive aircraft will be retired as it's not worth the cost. Imagine that!
Sure, the Americans and Europeans have better technology but it isn't being used.
Sure? So you think that the Americans and Europeans have better tech? I personally, I'm not sure. What I know is that we Americans kind-of blow our own trumpets, which is sad. The Russians on the other hand, just do their thing. Remember when they were the ONLY link to the ISS? They did not blow their trumpets one bit. If it were the Americans it would be a different story.
They still have the biggest and heaviest airplane ever developed - even bigger than the A380, and this was almost 2 decades ago! . No body mentions this! In fact, I thought the Europeans were gonna borrow the design of the A380 from them. Apparently we only seem to thrive at complexity.
The rockets that are flying are still 60's tech, mostly military derivations at at that.
Ahh, so what has our 21st century tech achieved? Nothing! It appears to be a beacon of corruption, nepotism and bigotry. You probably would not even appreciate the fact that the ISS would be a failure if the Russians were not involved.
The EU nations not successful? The Corot is an ESA mission!
That isn't in dispute. What I wanted to put across is the fact that when it comes to putting equipment into space, no body beats the Russians. In fact, the COROT has been put into space using RUSSIAN hardware.
When it comes to space launches, no nation beats Russia on cost, reliability and efficiency. One thing still bothers me...why haven't the US or EU nations been successful on this front? There are huge sums of money to be made but the Russians still beat us (the USA) in this game. Why?
"Remote community" and "modern world" contradict one another here.
I beg to disagree with you here and say "Not necessarily."
There is a remote community in Namibia that I visited. These folks live in canyons in a very arid and cold part of the desert. I can assure you that they had every modern amenity known to the western world, everything powered by the sun. I was surprised myself and loved it. The question is, if I found that they did not have a computer ready to be opened up, this would mean 18 hours to get to the nearest town.
20 years? Sure thing. Rip it to a hard drive. Embrace the digital nature olf the DVD!
Oh, rip to a hard drive! What a suggestion! So that if I have to demo something to a remote community, I have to make sure they have a working computer I can open up in order to install the HD? Think about it, is this really practical in the modern world?
Much as I love the features of the DVD if paired with an equally capable player, the DVD has its own [ugly] issues. Despite the fact that it's a modern invention, nobody can even come close to guaranteeing that the DVD medium (the disc) can withstand storage for long times.
Can any slashdotter convince me that if I had properly stored important video media on a disc in say 20 years ago, this disc would still be readable now? With proper storage, the video cartridge would still be readable now after that long. This is my beef with DVDs.
If the DoD cannot find a solution to this kind of email, they should outsource its management to countries like India and Russia. Isn't it true that a good amount of our defense contracts are outsourced?
It's a basic literacy problem. Americans have really poor literacy.
I be to differ with you. I think it's a problem of "No Child left behind." This policy leads to teachers "faking" results to get more funding and the deadly "I co not care attitude", which kills morale.
On Linux, nothing can beat Postgresql/Apache combination to run this infrastructure. If they had chosen MySQL, I'd be very worried and concerned as to whether it was a wise choice.
Why? MySQL, in addition to its gotchas, recently quietly dropped support for distros other than Red Hat and SUSE. So Debian folks are currently out in the "cold", though I am sure these folks can make MySQL run on Debian.
It details a group of librarians at the Georgia Public Library Service that have developed an open source, enterprise-class library management system that may revolutionize the way large-scale libraries are run.
The system appears to be pretty complex from the description above. If indeed, it's the group of librarians that developed it, they must be very very gifted. I am trying to see how any of the librarians at my former university would develop a system even half as complex. They did not seem to be all that IT savvy! And by the way, mine was a "prestigious" university in the USA.
But I guess the definition of "enterprise-class" is in itself, subjective.
I wonder: Is there a way to conceal IP addresses and MAC addresses? What about slashdot? Are we being monitored? You see, I have posted what has been regarded as "flambait" a number of times.
