Not having enough legitimacy work for everyone and having those who are working doing overtime are not exclusive. You are right that the overtime issue does muddy the waters. I see the overtime is as the effect of not enough jobs supposed to the cause.
Not having enough jobs leads to over apply of labor. Over supply of labor leads to a disproportionate amount of power in company hands. This disproportionate power leads to companies redefining 'salary' from 'pay to get the job done without counting hours' to 'work loss of overtime for free'.
Of course you should be able to open a utility meter you own. The one on the outside of most of our homes are not owned by the homeowner though. At least around here, the meter is owned by the power company and I support their right to open the meters also. Of course, they need to follow any applicable laws to use them in commerce, but it they take the meter back to their office and open it up, more power to them.
Who cares what the mechanism was. Letting the caller leave a message has been ubiquitous for decades. Besides, the GPP specifically said "answering machine or voicemail".
Your fooling yourself. By the late '70s they were common. If you want to nit pick it, by the mid 80s they were ubiquitous. Either way, letting the machine pick it up has been an option for decades.
The whole thing gets even more complicated when you add in the fact that we are rapidly approaching (if not a good distance past) the point that there simply isn't enough work for everyone to do. It doesn't necessarily matter that you might be better at A and I am better at B. If you are better at A, good enough at B and automation has made it cheaper to have one person doing A and B, it may not matter if I am better at B.
That still isn't a knock against Walmart. It is a knock against our collective inability to accept that at some point, we just don't have enough legitimate work for everyone.
People do seem to forget that before Walmart there was Sears. They not only filled the role of Walmart before Walmart existed, they also filled the roll of Amazon. Needed a hammer? Go to Sears. Needed a bathtub? Go to Sears. Heck, Needed a house? Go to Sears.
The killer electric car feature for me would be a generator trailer. If I could drive around on all electric 90% of the time, and when I want to do a 2000 mile road trip, I just good the gas generator trailer to the back and drive 300+ miles between fill-ups, I would be all over the electric car.
I have yet to see an 1800 lumens LED bulb for sale in a brick an morter store. At about $20 and 1800 lumens is where I will stop buying other kinds of bulbs. Obviously I hope that they can get down to the $1 to $2 range, but that isn't necessary. Today, LED is the lighting tech that many of us are impatiently waiting for.
The same could be said about women and their frivolous shopping. I have known more than one man who has had his retirement spent on shoes, trips to the hair salon and similar things. I'm pretty sure that no one is suggesting frivolous shopping be outlawed.
Prostitution is trickier than that. It is absolutely legal to trade the sexual use of your body for money, you just have to use the correct euphemisms. The very definition of a 'Gold Digger' is a prostitute that works within the legal system. It is an activity that is very common. Prostitution's illegality is more of a cartel situation where the businesses with influence don't want competition for just anybody. They want the barrier of entry to stay high.
You really don't understand why anyone would like big fake boobs? Really? I can understand it not being your thing, but it completely eludes me how someone other than yourself like them would completely elude you.
I'm not discriminated against because of my looks or gender.
You are fooling yourself. Try getting a job in a maternity ward. Try getting a job as a kindergarten teacher. Try giving a neighbor kid a hug. Try complaining about domestic violence. Try getting custody of your kids in a divorce. Try getting public assistance if you cannot afford to eat. We literally have federal programs that specifically exclude you. The fact that you can claim that you are not discriminated against when one of our national safety nets specifically excludes you because of gender is indisputable proof that you are a "self hating dude who seems to enjoy a bit of self-flagellating ( of the decidedly non sexual variety) in order to feel modern and right."
Men did not impost the traditional male role. The modern gender roles have been formed over hundreds of years and have been a back and forth evolution between the genders and technology. If you want to understand modern gender roles, you have to go well into prehistoric times. In the end, they come down to the inability for a 9 month pregnant woman to chase down and spear a caribou in the dead of winter.
Why are we so bad at overturning them?
Because traditions exist. They exist because most people are very bad at analyzing the ramifications of their actions beyond the here and now. For tens of thousands of years, those that strayed too far off the beaten track were much more likely to be eaten by a pack of hungry wolves. Thus sticking to the status quo has been a survival instinct for both men and women.
Why do more women graduate with undergraduate degrees, but fewer complete graduate studies?
Because people are lazy. That's right people. From the time they leave the womb, little girls are taught that they CAN have a career. That they CAN provide for themselves. It is always 'CAN'. Little boys are told that they HAVE to have a career. That they HAVE to provide for themselves. Like it or not, the humans that are the most career driven are the humans that feel the MUST be career driven. The humans who feel that being career driven is a choice will have a lot more of them choosing not to do the extra work. Women not putting as much effort into education is a classic case of correlation not being causation.
Why are women expected to take care of children and put THEIR careers on hold?
That one while still having a pretty simple answer, has more than one factor. First, as stated above, men have it drilled into them from birth that if they don't succeed in their careers, they are failures, and may very well starve. At the very least, they will have crappy lives. Women on the other hand have it drilled into them from birth that having a good career is simply a choice. When two people in a relationship, one of them sees their career as an option, and the other sees their career as a requirement, it should not be a mystery which one is going to "put their careers on hold".
That is just some couples though. Remember, when a group of people are told that they don't have to work, a decent percentage of them will choose not to. Our gender roles give most women the excuse to stop working, and they have been taught since birth that working is a lifestyle choice.
No doubt, there are also cases of the man insisting that he not take the time off, but it is pretty darn callous to imply he is being unfair just because he has had it beaten into him every day of his life that if he doesn't provide, he will be alone and destitute if he doesn't keep his career on track.
It's been the traditional male role...imposed by MEN.
This is the biggest lie. Women are full and equal partners in defining and enforcing gender roles. They sleep with men who are crass. They marry men who are 'good providers'. They teach their daughters that they don't have to provide for themselves. That working is a choice. They read and promote books like 'The Rules'.
Why is it so weird to demand--as I'm trying to--that we portray women in a way that's equitable and inoffensive?
Because it is considered weird to demand that we portray people in a way that's equitable and inoffensive. The fact that you only see this as a problem when it is women who are not the hero shows just how deep your misandry runs. We could trade examples, both private and public of misogyny and misandry. The list could almost literally go on forever. Either way, there are tons of media that treat both genders fairly as well as badly.
The TV remotes you are referring to most certainly did indicate a location. If you were on channel 3, clicking the remote would instruct the television to change to channel 4 and start receiving the content from the third party. Depending on location, that could be CBS, ABC, NBC or some other local affiliate. The only data the remote offered the TV was to instruct it to get content from a third location.
For poor friends ( which gets to be less as we get older ) I buy durable presents, but for any family or friends that have enough money to buy their own stuff, I always try my best to buy consumables. That way if it is something they like, they will enjoy it, but if it is something they don't like, they have an easy excuse for it being gone a week later.
I agree. I don't know if 95 is what I would call the pinnacle, but it is the version of Windows that made me sell my Amiga. I actually like a lot of the desktop tweaks that Windows 7 has over 95, but it is still basically the same desktop.
My son installed Linux entirely on his own about a week after his 2nd Birthday. I formatted his hard drive, handed him Ubuntu 5.10 install disk and told him to install his OS. No, he couldn't read. No, reading was not necessary. Yes, the hardware was supported. Claims that Linux is difficult to install are claims of stupidity. I'm not buying it. Yes, as his father, I like to think my son is brilliant. Even so, anyone who cannot match wits with (even a brilliant) 2 year old is severely brain damaged.
Linux has not been difficult to install for almost a decade.
It wouldn't necessarily impossible. I have said for a decade that the post office should get in to the email game. This would be one revenue source for them. Charge a small fee for email delivery through their relay. Then the rest of us could set our email servers to only accept email from white listed domains and addresses. This would cause all of the cost to be front loaded on the initial contact. Thus legitimate email would be very close to free, and spam would be really expensive.
This could be even better if our smtp standard could be enhanced with a 'you are not white listed, send via usps relay' error message. This way out going email could function as it currently does for users and admins could set their own cost budgeting policies.
One of the basic premises of Christianity is a zombie story. But as I said... If you don't think that believing the dead are rising from the grave is nuts, there isn't much else to be said.
Of course you crooks are cutting the salt to save money. It is clearly a conspiracy with the fast food cartel for use on their french fries that are not made of real potatoes.

Answering machines have been widely available since the late '70s. Voice mail is just "cloud" based answering machines.
You and me both. I hate the horrible light that incandescent bulbs put out.

Not being able to understand other people's desires must make the world a confusing and scary place...
Giving a P4 to the poor is evil. The cost of running it can easily cost more than a brand new computer.
I'm thinking it might just start with not thinking that you are the single official conduit for the transmission of Gods word to earth.
