From TFA the lack of defintion is in some cases fraudulent charges are counted as ID theft. I would have to say it only counts as ID theft if you have the ability to extend new lines of credit. Simply having the CC numbers is easy enough to correct. On the other hand losing your drivers license and social security number to someone creates a nightmare.

The only problem I see with a biometics solution is that ultimatly most of the information is going to be transmitted electronically and the collection (reading) of the data (finger) could be forged. Does anyone know if it would be possible to set up some sort of hashing or "encryption" keyed off of your finger print? Then the company could send a set of data to the customer and the customer would have to encrypt it and send it back. Then the company can compare the received encryption code with one that was generated locally. This assumes there is some way for the person to create an initial finger print. ...Thinking about this a little more, it could help when you shop in physical stores if you had to scan your finger.

And as bandwidth becomes cheaper you can increase the amount of noise in the message that can't easily be eliminated by a machine.

Perhaps first prompt, "would you like to associate with this computer (doing so will remove all of the files on your shuffle)?". If you click yes then have it say "WARNING: You are about to delete all content from your shuffle, proceed?"

As far as backups, iPods are not intented for backup devices. If you really want to make sure your data is protected go out and buy a tape drive. As an alternative you could buy either an external hard drive or backup to DVD's. I agree that 99.9% of piracy is going to happen through the Internet, but it's like putting a lock on luggage. You could easily cut the zipper, but you want to make it a little less obveous and more difficult.

This being said I want to let you know I'm against the RIAA's tactics (I won't buy/download any of their media), I'm against DRM, and I'm all about changing the way music is created and distributed.

Another note, you can upload files onto the iPod as a drive without any problems. You can also d/l the music off the iPod through a hidden folder (I suggest everyone enable show hidden files), but the file names are truncated (probably an FS limitation?).

I think you've been listening to Ann Coulter for too long. The point of his statement is that there a vast number of Muslims in the world. If you attempt to pick them all out and search them, then you are going miss a lot of other potential threats. The majority of Arabs are not Muslim and the majority of Muslims are not Arabic. I believe that the Muslim religion is also the world's most prevelant.

I think the most effective way to run things would be to ensure that every person is well screened and all bagagge is checked. Unfortunatly, Bush is too busy giving rich people their taxes back so he can't afford to properly outfit the nations needs. Look at the coast guard's requests for protecting ports that go unanswered.

In a speech Ann Coulter listed about 20 attacks made against US forces by Muslim extremests. Her conclusion was that at some point it's not a racest profile it's the profile of the villian. The problem with this logic is that it doesn't acknowledge all of the attacks by domestic militant groups like the Oklahoma City bombing. It also opens up the search to too wide of a group. The equivalent would be to haul in every white male in his 30's and 40's ever time there is a serial killer. When 10% of the population matches the profile you have to make the profile more specific.

I could see it being less obtrusive to have the system check the ID tag to see if it's been married, if it hasn't, then it writes that DVD player's serial number to it, if it has been written it just verifies. The thing with RFID tags is that they are read/writable which means that someone could just clear off the tag and write something on it to allow transferring.

I'd be interested to know how this would hold up in court since you have fair use of the movie as long as you own it. Is there any guarantee that you are allowed to transfer ownership?

One article I read a few years back that fits very well her is, what does the consumer gain by adding this restriction? Much like SuperAudio, I don't feel like I'm gaining much for the increased limitations so I'm not going to buy this new DVD player. If that means I can't buy the newest movies, then I'll just survive without them.

I guess a good overarching rule is that in any transaction the consumer and the producer must gain. A person isn't going to pay a large quantity of money for the next shitty blockbuster and a movie company isn't going to spend millions of dollars on a film that's just going to get pirated over the internet and not have any return. In the end people will either provide content for cheaper/free and people will d/l it for free, or companies will produce content for a fee as long as it's profitable.

I think that all content filtering should be done at the individual level. If you don't want to look at porn, then don't go to porn sites. If you don't want to hear Howard Stern saying something that you find objectionable, then don't listen to his show. If you don't want your kids to be watching all the "dirty" videos on MTV, then cancel your cable. I wonder how many people actually upgrade there computer with new Windows versions, and how many just buy a new computer every few years with the latest version.

Many of the hard core computer users I know will rebuild their Windows box several times a year, but I've seen far more computers that are so bogged down with all sorts of crap in the registry and 50 apps that startup on boot that the machine is practically useless.

Does anyone else out there think that M$ deliberatly sabatoges users machines slowly so that users think they need to buy new machines every other year? I feel like when I built my P3 800MHz machine running Win2k it booted almost instantly, and before I put linux on it the boot/shutdown too forever!

I think the only way that Linux is going to get a large market share is if it gets into schools and businesses. Once people get more comfortable with the OS, they will want to use it at home. As of right now, the biggest argument I hear from people not wanting to install Linux is "what does it do that Windows doesn't?" For most people security and stability lose out over ease of installations in Windows (I know ./configure, make, make install) and compatibility with just about everything.
