How about someone adopt the thousands of kids who are already living and breathing before we go and create more kids.
How about instead of people going to China and Peru to adopt kids, they adopt the ones that are here in this country.
How many kids have you adopted? Until you've adopted at least one, you have no basis to tell women what they can and can't do with their own bodies or prevent them from destroying their own eggs.
And no-one who plays baseball is in a position to criticise cricket! Especially with a "World Series" with no teams from outside the US.
As was said in the movie Independence Day, "That's not entirely correct." There was a time when the Montreal Expos were part of baseball and thus, World Series, was correct. However, they moved to Washington, D.C. and are now known as the Washington Nationals.
Get it? Washington Nationals, located in Washington, D.C. Get it? Yeah, that's what I thought when I heard the name change.
ES&S officials have been more assertive in preparing for the fall elections.
Yeah, they need to make sure the 'right' candidate is elected.
There is a court case in PA which is trying to force the 57 counties which currently use electronic voting machines to use paper ballots.
Obviously this will never happen because having paper ballots would mean having a physical record of a vote if there was a need to do a recount. And we wouldn't want to have a physical trail of votes, now would we?
If you look at the Slashdot article link from July that I posted a bit up the way, you'll see this:
"Under Project Orion, NASA would launch crews of four astronauts aboard Orion capsules, first to Earth orbit and the International Space Station and then later to the Moon."
Thus, both the project itself and the vehicles are called Orion.
Further, from the July 20th Space.com article there is this:
NASA intends to use the moniker Orion as both the title for its next generation manned craft, the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV), and as the project's name.
Going on the assumption that instead of laying copper the folks doing the reconstruction will be laying fiber, will fiber work if it's underwater? Or will the water, once it gets through the coating, degrade the signal so much that you can't use fiber?
Funny, the first video I thought of was Billy Idol's "Rock the cradle of love". That girl was TEH HOTTT!!!
Absolutely! Much better than most of the women they showed in videos. Another one to add to the list, even though she only appeared for a few moments, is the woman at the end of David Lee Roth's "Just a Gigolo" video. The one who bends over in front of the double doors as he does his final dance before entering the double doors.
Given a bit of time I'm sure we could come up with several other videos which have the appropriate eye candy. But not Tawny Kitaen. Gah! I'm sick of the video and the song and she wasn't that hot to begin with.
Sidenote: if you ever get to see the David Lee Roth video, watch very closely as he's thrashing about in the above mentioned part. You will notice his hand accidentally slaps the hat on her head and she never flinches.
One of the problems I have with my laptop at work is that when I eat lunch at my desk, the touchpad will interpret dropped crumbs as a continual touch, which immediately makes the cursor uncontrollable.
Patient: Hey dod, my arm hurts when I do this (swings arm back and forth).
Doctor: Then don't do that!
Seriously, if the problem is that your touchpad doesn't like having crumbs on it, don't eat over your touchpad/keyboard. Problem solved!
as an AC line with throw you off while a DC line will cause you to simply grab harder and you can't let go.
Which is why my sister-in-law once told me to use the back on ones hand if you aren't sure if a line is still live or dead. Your hand will contract around nothing thus giving you a slightly better chance of survival.
To both of the above posters, yes, I am aware these were only primaries and technically the incumbents weren't voted out of office but, the chances of any of the three being able to retain their seats, including Lieberman, is essentially zero.
Neither McKinney nor Swarz will crossfile and Lieberman is only prolonging the inevitable.
So yes, three incumbents were voted out of office. We just have to wait until November for it to be finalized.
I am honestly wondering when the last time was that voting actually mattered in the US.
Several incumbent Congress folks were voted out of office yesterday. The three that I know of are Joe Lieberman (over 18 years in the Senate), Cynthia McKinney and Joe Schwarz (1-term Republican from Michigan).
It also appears that Rick Santorum, Senator from my state, will be unseated this fall unless the new electronic voting machines can be surrepticiously rigged after testing (which seems to be very thorough thanks to Carnegie Mellon University professor Michael Shamos). See this article which gives a brief background of him.
The key is that those fat, lazy, apathetic people who, like you apparently, don't feel their vote count, get up and vote out the incumbents. Once the incumbents are removed, if things don't improve, vote out the ones you just put in. Keep doing that until the message sinks in.
Of course being that we only have a ~30% voter turnout this will never happen and people will continue to whine that their vote doesn't matter. Which it won't if you don't get off your fat, lazy ass and cast a vote.
Between the myriad of sticky notes stuck to the monitor, the stains on the keyboard and plant life growing from between the keys, my users have no problem beautifying their computers.
When you add in all the pictures of family, the stuffed toys and gazillion dust bunnies, it's like a freakin' art gallery!
I understand what you're saying but I meant a general paper trail like fill-in-the-bubble or a checkbox. Even if a machine reads what a person has marked there is still a piece of paper one can go back to look to see if the machine couldn't read a mark or made a mistake reading a mark. There is still something physical to look at.
A physical paper trail is even more important in a recount. There, depending on the state, a hand recount, as opposed to a machine recount, can be performed and an absolutely accurate accounting of votes cast can be made.
For all the whining, teeth-gnashing and guffaws that Florida had to endure in 2004, there was one thing about the recount that shows the reason why paper ballots or a verifiable paper trail are superior to electronic means: you still have a physical record to check against.
Regardless of the intent or incompetence of Diebold and others to throw elections, if there is a paper trail of some sort one can always go back and physically look at the votes that were cast. Compare that to an electronic method in which one has to hope, even after testing, that the machines are correctly recording ones intended vote.
As a side note, after all the flubs, mistakes, oversights and investigations into Diebold machines, it's amazing that they are even allowed to participate in making voting machines.
On monday I sent out an email to people I know who work in the industry and who might appreciate celebrating tomorrow. I even talked to my supervisors and while they all agreed it would be nice to celebrate, those higher up the food chain, not to mention the users, would not appreciate giving us a small token of appreciation.
Unfortunately we're not in a position to muck with the system such as putting on special logon scripts or delaying taking care of issues so for us it's just another friday. *sigh*
At least I, and a few others, get free pizza for doing some other work last month so I'll take what I can get.
First we have evidence that cell users are as bad as drunk drivers yet now we want these same people to use their 2"X2" cell phone screen to look at a map of their location to see if there is a traffic jam ahead.
Given the instinctive fear of snakes that humans possess,
Not all humans have an instinctive fear of snakes. For instance, I've taken pictures of some local snakes at a range of about 6". These snakes are not poisonous so I know the worst I could get from them is a nasty bite.
If these were poisonous snakes would I still be that close? Probably not but that's simply a healthy respect for the snake and not a fear of it. If you take your time and don't ruffle its scales you can get close to most any snake. If these were copperheads or rattlers I could probably, comfortably, take pictures at a range of 12" or so.
Granted, there are those that the mere picture of a snake will send them into a tizzy but with therapy can overcome that fear. Same with spiders and other crawly things.
Personally, I believe that the reason some people fear snakes is three-fold. First comes from the bible and it's boogeyman characterization of a snake being an evil thing. Second, from all the bad movies showing snakes being evil creatures. Third, from parents telling their kids that snakes are evil things (which comes from points 1 and 2.).
If people are brought up that snakes should be respected and not feared, many problems between snakes and people wouldn't be around.
we should all try to be conscious of the power that we use and do what we can to cut that down...
Nice idea but since both electrical and natural gas rates are, for the most part, regulated industries, you can end up with situations where a company wanted to raise rates because people were conserving too much. Don't believe me? Read on.

NPR had an astrologer on last night and he said the same thing. Their definition of a planet is different than what the 'experts' say is a planet.
Then again, when you're dealing with flimflam you can pretty much say whatever you want.
The fact that NPR had this segment only served to legitimize this nonsense and continued to give hope to the gullible that astrology is valid.
This pretty much goes along with what a poster from yesterday said about the Indiana Star article and my response.
What do you mean, 'replaced'?
Yeah, they need to make sure the 'right' candidate is elected.

Lionel Hutz: Mrs. Simpson, remember that you are under oath.
Marge: We drove around until three in the morning looking for another open all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant.
Lionel Hutz: And when you couldn't find one?
