Throw away all the cartdiges. PC-PRO here in the UK did a survey a few months ago and Inkjet ink is more expensive per CC than even vintage Champagne.
So, get your self a continuios inking system. Then buy inks in 100cc, 500cc or even 1 litre bottles and watch the cost of your prints go down.
Lyson make great archival quality inks and there are continious inking system for many printers. I have two A3+ Printers set up like this. One is for colour and the other uses 7 shades of grey for fantastic black and white printing.
IMHO, Microsoft won't sell a stripped down system as it goes totally against all their marketing spin that says "IE/WMP/etc it totally part of the O/S and we can't strip it out"
Besides the deluge of lawsuits they would get lumbered with, they would risk becoming the next SCO (Derided by 90%+ of the IT Community) and suffer a total loss of whatever credibility they have left.
If I remember correctly, the version field in the F11ACP structure is held as an unsigned 16bit integer so you can have 65536 version of a file. If that enough for you?
This is old technology. As has bee reported, there are many products that already perform this functionality. AFAIK, one vital point has not been raised in this debate. That is the drain on the battery of the camera when you connect to it via USB.
I did some tests with my Nikon D100 and found that the battery was draining pretty fast when connected up via USB. This is why there is a separate socket for an external PSU.
On my recent trip to Madagascar, I took two different Image storeage devices along with me.
1) A FlashTrax with an 80Gb HDD. Also contained my MP3 collection plus two spare batteries. This has a USB2 interface and reads CompactFlash etc cards directly.
2) An ImageTank with 80Gb HDD. This is an old device and in no longer available.
I shot my pictures onto 512Mb CF cards using my D100 & D70 cameras and transferred them to the above devices at the end of the day. I never had problems with batteries running out.
As they say, this works for me. This device is nothing really new.
Is this the same INTEL that recently said " If the net grows to 100 billion devices connected to it, our goal is to have a piece of Intel inside in every one of those hundred billion"

IMHO, this is a pure bit or maketing FUD just to promote INTEL.
So carry on INTEL and you too could soon become the pariah that Microsoft could only dream about.
So we have someone stopped from using WIFI outside a public library and in a related event, another public library has stopped people from using Mobiles while inside the Library. You are in a loose-loose situation here.
Welcome to the 21st Century Luddites Everywhere.
Perhaps there is a case for libraries & other places that provide open WIFI access points to provide a room where general access to the WIFI net is allowed as well as permitting the use of Mobiles at the same time.
This reminds me of an early Computer Fraud from the 1970's. Here, a programmer modified an application to take a few cents from each transaction and "divert" it to his account. This was illegal then and he was caught in a Federal rap when he tried moving the money over a state line. I wonder if the same legislation could actually trap the Wiretap Police in 2004?
This is a SCAM pure and simple to raise money.
These reasons are also the reason why come the next revolution at the head of the queue to be executed will be the Lawyers. The majority are a plague that should be exterminated and,
At the head of that queue will be the politicians who are lawyers. They only pass laws that will provide income for other lawyers. If I had it my way, Lawyers would be barred from being lawmakers. The one requirement IMHO to become a lawyer and politician is to have all aspects of common sense forcibly extracted like a wisdom tooth.
I Think that companies that are about to or have embarked upon a "Patent Everything and Screw the OSS Liberals" path should think again and again and again.
There are two types of patents. Those which are enforced and those which are not. In some companies, getting a patent granted is a sign of Excellence in your field. In others (we know who you are...) it is a tool to get money from whoever and wherever possible.
IMHO, if a company who had a raft of patents donated all royalties from a large chunk to a Not for Profit (or Similar company), this would go a long way to setting an example for others.
As an industrial historian, I would hate to see something like the Tollpuddle Martyrs happen in the 21st Century. The way the the likes of SCO want us to act reminds me of the quote attribued to Henry Ford, "Any colour as long as its BLACK". The OSS world is by its very nature diverse and we should tight tooth and nail to keep it that way. From where I am sitting now I see a poster that says
"Imagine a World
With Only
One colour
One flavour
One texture
One Aroma
and
One Sound
It might be interesting....
For the first hour
Value diversity
"
This is from a company that has tens of thousands of patents and also contributes to the OSS cause"
Not all mega corps are bad all the time. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learnt by some others here.
As the Italian National Colour is BLUE(Their football team is called the Azeris (spelling probably wrong) from Azure a lovely shade of blue, then here is a real home for the BSOD.
Fiats in my experience are about as reliable as Windows. As I have said for many years, if MicroSoft made card then they would have been sued out of business due to product defects years ago. Now there might be a chance...
