Wait for Vista ? why not move to OSX ? The FileVault feature is built into OSX and can be configured to automatically encrypt all the data in your home folder.
You can even use it to encrypt virtual memory !

I love how all the upcoming "new" features in Vista are already in OSX 10.4, with more coming shortly with 10.5.
And this is not even coming from a mac zealot either ! Been a pc user all my life, but just got mine 2 months ago and haven't touched my pc since ... so many features, and it just works ! Make the switch !

Face it, there's morons on both sides of the fence. Politics is not an epic battle between the forces of good and evil ! It would be easier for things to be so clear cut, but in reality life is a million different shades of gray.

So when you vote in november, just try to elect the person who seems to make the most sense and represents what you stand for as a human being, AFTER having heard their ideas/platforms/etc. And heck, if both turn out to be the wrong choice for you, vote independent ! Its only a wasted vote if you don't show up !

Instead, we're supposed to medicate people so they can feel better about themselves and accept the status quo ?

What if there's a real reason you're depressed. Yes, the world around you sucks. You realize your job is meaningless. And you don't know what to do with your life.
What if there IS something wrong with our society. Why SHOULD i waste my life working at something i don't really care about, so what, so I can spend two days a week doing something that I actually like doing ? OooOO... And all that for what ? So i can afford to buy my iPod, watch Tivo and all the crap that society is pushing on us ?

And don't give me some of that "your work should be your pleasure" thing. Recent numbers are that 80-90% of people do not like their jobs.
So this is a problem not just with myself but with society as a whole. I mean how many of us actually enjoy coding day in day out, on tight deadlines, and on projects know one cares about.

Faulty intelligence ! how can establishment with so much infrastructure, manpower and money (and capabilities) as the US intelligence community be so wrong about something. What's sad is you can't say that anywhere without being accused of playing partisan politics. I don't care what side of the electoral fence you're on, but i'm sorry, this administration still owes us an explanation.

Believe in the conspiracy if you choose to or not.

But even if you leave it aside, you still have an election system which is completely flawed and prone to tampering. THAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE. Have you ever heard of a completely secure computer ? Trust me it doesn't exist. Its online secure until the next vulnerability.

Even without a conspiracy a certain software bug could end up giving more votes to one side than the another. And even then, are you willing to live with machine who randomly crashes and loses votes (which is a fact!) ? And what about the possibility of another country stealing the election ? Doesn't that scare you a little bit ? Imagine China skewing the election in favor of their favorite candidate.

The whole reason people are talking about this is that the system allows for all these things. Who cares if it actually happened.
And how do you fix that (if you really really need to have an electronic-voting system) ?

First step - paper trail, paper trail, paper trail !

Second - an OPEN system and platform which can be peer reviewed.

This is not about partisan politics. Just basic comp sci principle. And it should be a basic citizen-principle to reject such a faillable system.

Tell me what the difference is between this and the following scenario:
A new radio station opens up in town at 101.1Mhz, and decides that in order to increase profit, it will require listeners to pay a set fee per month. A constant reminder of this fact is broadcasted in between songs "to listen to the following, you need to be a member of bla bla bbla, send payment to..."

If you inadventently (or intentionally) dial to 101.1 and continue to listen even AFTER youv'e heard the legal disclaimer stating that you should not keep listening, does that constitute theft ? In both cases, we're dealing with
    - EM waves, broadcasted in the public domain
    - willfull infringement of the original purpose of the service
    - and knowledge of this infringement.

The only real difference that I see, is that since radio is one-way only, the user would think to himself "how are they ever gonna know i'm listening", and thus keep listening. The internet user on the other hand, doesn't have this luxury.

What we need is something similar to Digg Spy, but for patents. An interface which would allow you to view patent applications as they come in. Anybody could then pick one based on their expertise and start hammering away at it. If prior art exists, add a comment which highlights the fact.

This would take a huge burden off the patent office, which could then focus solely on (in)validating the claims.

I'm not too sure if the social networking side of things would work (i.e bunch of geeks doing it for the greater good), but you can bet that large corporations would start playing the game. They could hire entire departments whose sole job would be to invalidate competitor's patent application.
